Torquay United v Oldham Athletic Sat 6 August KO 3pm

Post by portugull »

Ahead of the opening National League game of the 2022/23 Season I spent 20 minutes tonight reading the Oldham Fans Forum.

They do not sound very hopeful about Saturday as they lost their best 5 players at the end of last season. Sounds familiar to me!

They seem concerned about their Goalkeeper who is 25 but has only 60 games on his CV.

I feel a bit sorry for their fans who are being overcharged for travel to Devon left ,right and centre. It sounds like the Railways are doubling fares.

It is why I avoid catching a train in UK as the system is a national disgrace.

Nonetheless there is speculation they might bring 800 to 1,000 fans on Saturday.

We know there are no easy games in the NL but I sense Gary and Aaron have built a decent squad so ever the optimist I go 2-1 to United. COYY.

It’s all bit unknown for us this season with so many changes but looking forward to this one. I have a bit of optimism for the season and think we have made some good signings but we could be anything. Oldham shouldn’t be playing at this level but doesn’t sound like they have been great pre-season and we all know how easy it is to get stuck in this league.

Hopefully a decent crowd and a big atmosphere being the first game.

Well thebigp1 I will say with confidence you will not play on a better pitch than ours all season. It is magnificent.

I think this one will end in a 1-1 draw. Oldham may struggle at times adjusting to the league but *shouldn’t* have too many problems motivating themselves against an ex-league club.

First trip to Plainmoor for me in a while and looking forward to seeing what team Gary has put together for this campaign.

Should be a decent crowd... first day of the season and all that... plus the hoards of the great unwashed from up north descending on The Bay should make for quite an atmosphere.

Let's start with a decent 3-0 win and push on from there.

First game and will be coming down as we usually do for the opening home fixture.
Good to see that on this occasion, BT have left us alone re kick-off time.... :@ (Poor Yeovil)
Looking forward to the game and the (predicted) good weather. :)
Meeting forevertufc and a few others for pre match in No.10's, then a visit to the Gulls Nest.
Oldham have had a tricky pre-season with players leaving, but they have just been bought by a local businessman, so I would expect that they will pick up as the season goes on.
Think we'll win 2-0 and hopefully our man Brett bags a goal. :)
Up the Gulls.

Be great to get 3 points on the board first game but as long as we dont lose.
Surely its got to be better than last seasons first 3 home games
1-3, 0-4 1-3
Best opening day result I can remember -
1987 I think
Torquay 6 Wrexham 1 (Dobson 3, McLaughlin, Cole, Gardiner ?)

Looking at those first four games 8 points would be a great start. Hard to see how the likes of Halifax and BW will do this season though

Don't you just love a Grammar Nazi!

ps, I think there should be a comma after 'hordes' ....and... shouldn't the first word of a sentence be capitalised? :keepie:
