Going into the final 3 games – the fight for promotion

Post by Colorado Gull »

43 games played and only 3 to go with us, Shrewsbury and Crawley fighting for automatic promotion. The table looks as follows;

1. Swindon 43 +40 89 points
2. Shrewsbury 43 +26 84 points
3. Crawley 43 +24 80 points
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4. Torquay 43 +16 80 points

Swindon are up, not mathematically at the moment, but they are up and will be playing football in league 1 next year, so they are not a worry. The final 3 games for us, Shrewsbury and Crawley are as follows;

Shrewsbury
Accrington - Away
Dag & Red - Home
AFC Wimbledon - Away

Crawley
Dag & Red - Away
Hereford - Home
Accrington - Away

Torquay
AFC Wimbledon - Away
Crewe - Home
Hereford - Away

Currently we are 4 points behind Shrewsbury with 9 to play for, in my opinion Shrewsbury will be promoted and will finish 2nd. So it's between us and Crawley to get that last automatic spot (3rd).

What's everyone's feelings about the promotion fight and how do you think it will finish? Automatic promotion for the mighty Gulls? Or a 4th play off campaign in 5 seasons?

Almost certain it will be play offs, but who knows its a funny old game! I think the Howe chance at Oxford was the turning point as we were destined to go 2 goals up.

Funny you say that, Bearne. I said similar at the time, and it made me think about Shrews getting robbed last season, when Wycombes Gareth Ainsworth scored a "ghost goal" in a game between the sides. Eventually the Shrews missed out on GD (I think).

It is a funny old game, and I would love for Daggers to take something off Crawley on Saturday, only if we win at AFCW though.

Personally think we'll just be edged out, then lose in the playoff semis. :(

Being in 4th may be a good thing as Crawley now have the pressure of us overtaking them. Strange how a league position can affect the mindset of players.

Anyway who knows, best to not think about it and see what unfolds!

I am sticking with my prediction of last week. Crawley to finish on 85 drawing at Dagenham and Accy and beating Hereford. United to win the 2 away games and draw with Crewe 87!!

Accrington need to stop expeirimenting and play full strength since they have a big say in the promotion race.

The main problem I have is Shrewsbury and Crawleys fixtures look straight forward and we have to play an inform Crewe team...We need to start scoring goals and pray something happens in our favour.

Personally think we'll be playoffs.

For a start I think fantastic the team are going into the final 3 games witha chance of automatic promotion, it is all Saturday for me.

I thought all along that if Crawley are going to drop points it will be at Dagenham, if I am right, a win for us at Wimbledon and it's game on, and if the team should fail, any one still got the phone number for the green man :)

Not sure about that Alex, Dagenham unbeaten in 7 games now, and Crewe I think have only 1 win in their last 4 , the other 3 being draws.

Crewe have a young inexperienced side, be interesting to see how they handle the pressure of playing Cheltenham and on Saturday, anything other than a crewe win, would mean they would have to win at our place to keep their outside play-off hopes alive, that believe it or not could work in our favour.

Keep calm and carry on ladies.. :)

two mini seasons for me, the next three games hopefully will decide our fate, but failing that we have a further three game second spin of the dice!!

if we fail on both fronts then next season looks a very very tough league to get out of?? lets hope we can do it in one or other of these mini seasons!!

come on you yellows!!
still keeping the faith

I think we'll need 9 points - anything less and we'll be very lucky to get 3rd spot, it's totally in Crawley's hands now and their run in looks ideal.

Playoffs for us in my opinion, which worries me as the extra potential 3 games we have to play.

I don't fancy our luck at play offs. We must play for automatic!
