I just wanted to know what they were like. The fish in Australian waters are completely different to the fish in the North Sea, but if we had an Aussie on here, I'd be asking him all about them.

Matt.
Prices actually are pretty reasonable - I'm going to Boston on Saturday for the Revolution/Timbers match (look out for my match report! </blatant plug>-), and if I was paying for a ticket (I'm not, have press pass, woo) the most expensive is $42. Not sure on current exchange rates, but that's probably about £30. Cheapest tickets are $20, which I guess is about £12-£13. So..cheaper than Torquay. This is just at one place though, and although somebody below said that revenues are shared, that isn't right. TV Revenue from the national deal is shared, but each time will make local deals to serve their own market. (example, NY Red Bulls have just signed a multi-year deal with MSG, a local station that also covers Giants/Jets, Knicks basketball and Yankees/Mets baseball.) Plus this particular team play in the Gillette Stadium, which is an 80,000 capacity american football stadium - hardly design to watch real football in.

Competition is maintained (and yes, I know I'm drifting off-topic here) through use of a salary cap; each team has a certain amount of money to spend on players, which is given to them by the league. The exceptions to this are 'designated players', high earners for whom the league will only cover part of the salary (I think its $325,000 a year atm) - the rest must be paid by the club itself. What this means in practice is that the clubs with richer owners - New York and LA - can afford more Designated Players than most other teams can.

Ticket prices get higher for US national team games, depending on the venue/opposition. I was at the USA/Argentina game on saturday and the most expensive price for those tickets was $175. (again, I got away with not paying cos I got a press pass. And met Leo Messi, woo). It was still a sellout, though. 79,000 people. Blimey.

Think its a totally different situation over there Matt. Clubs are not dependent on attendance income to cover costs as all are "owned" by the league and a lot of revenue is shared between the clubs...

Either way, this isn't going to happen because it seems that although very good at keeping the club on the level, they don't seem to understand anything about marketing. As for the Warsaw (sorry, Walsall) game, I hadn't heard a thing about the price decrease. As lovely as £12 a ticket is too, it doesn't really seem like much of a decrease. The club would be better off sticking it at £8 (half price) for a match, promote the hell out of it, get a bunch of fans handing out leaflets and putting up banners and posters round town and then see how that goes. Not some half arsed website advert and that's it.

I would stick to the usual promotions for this season but next season should be the one to go for, target of 3k+ average for the year. It's definitely achievable.

Totally agree. Marketing and promoting the club is as important as 'what the prices should be'. Forgot all your fancy ticketing price schemes, marketing and promoting the club is more important.

^ I really hope the club has read that topic above.

This gets dragged out every season. "Why don't reduce prices to this much, etc etc". The answer is always the same - the club can't afford to. It might be a bit shortsighted; cheaper prices could maybe bring more kids who might then become lifelong fans, for example, but those are intangibles. The club needs to make sure that the bills get paid, and having made a loss in recent years, it's more important at this time to get money in the tills.

Supposed to be playing so sadly not. I will be at the Wycombe game and potentially the Chesterfield one as well. I want to go to the Burton away game and that will probably be my lot, unless we get to the playoffs.

I wonder if the point is being totaly missed, the club have done this reduce prices and offer's nothing changed,Barnet home was kids for a quid,gate..2139.

And 12 matchs for the price of 10 has been in force since the Barnet game, gate's are only going up now becasue we are in the run in,and the team has a shout of promotion.

http://www.torquayunited.com/page/News/ ... 66,00.html

Or maybe it because the club does not market these offer's well enough, but they have tried and failed to increase gates with these reduced prices and special offer deal's,why should they carry on when locals keep turning there nose up,at these offer's

i would do my idea especially for Saturday. We've got Lincoln in town, 120ish away fans, crowd of sub 2500 guaranteed. Nothing to lose in my opinion. (although it's probably too late now)
Well too late now!

Assuming a 3k gate (150 short for our last Sat home game), it would need to go up to 3800ish to break even against the existing price structure though?

You down for this one?

Strangely enough Matt, that seems to be what a lot of L2 teams do (Oxford charge something like 2.50 more if you just turn up and pay on the day).

ferrarilover wrote:Hmmm, I wonder how many people, for whatever reason (hangover, sloth, lie in etc) intend to go to a Saturday game, but, come the day, can't be arsed? I mean people with avoidable problems, such as those mentioned, not guys with genuine and serious reasons for missing matches. It does make me wonder whether the trade off between offering an early bird match day ticket would be worth it. Purchased before, say, 1700 on the prior Thursday, an early bird ticket is, say, £1 or £1.50 or even £2 cheaper. This minimises the losses to the club in terms of pure entry price, but it does then commit those who have purchased advance tickets to turning up, rather than deciding they can't be arsed. Now, granted, it might not get more than, say, an extra 100 people through the gate, but it is at least something and might even represent a net gain in revenue for the club.

Hardly an original idea, but it might work and is probably worth a punt.

Matt.
