Re: Captain for Saturday

It has to be The Pickler. Once he's got a taste for it, our captaincy problems will be solved. He will relish it.

Re: Battle of the Seasiders - Match Thread

Yes, I feel confident too. It's about time our losing/drawing run was over and so:
Torquay United (2) 3
Morecambe (0) 0

But, sadly, Att: 2,108

Re: Why do you support Torquay?

You don't choose to support a club - it chooses you!
If you don't know what that means then you're not a proper supporter (you may as well catch a bus each fortnight to Manchester).
Whitby Town chose me when I was 13.
Torquay United chose me when I was 20.
No other clubs have since.

Re: Away End For Home Fans Poll

Absolutely not. It should be recognised that the supporters of TUFC are not entirely those who contribute to this forum. If that were so, it would seem that the entire fan base is made up of those who think that the creation of an 'atmosphere' by banging and shouting is what constitutes support. If these youths want to make a racket then bugger off to the away end! The pop. side is NOT for visiting fans, but for us - those who do not necessarily bang, shout, chant, make a bloody nuisance, and think that supporting a football club means only making a loud noise. Us old 'uns exist too and have our rights! If we don't want to bang and shout so much then that is our choice.

Re: Away End For Home Fans Poll

Please! And as quickly as possible! Get the wretched drum and its spotty-faced followers out of the pop. side NOW - and leave it to us moaning old codgers.

Re: When was your first Torquay game?

On the 13th April, 1963, I went to Plainmoor for the first time. We beat Chester 1-0 with a goal from Peter Anderson. The attendance was 4000+.

Gilbert and the drum

I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but I've an idea how to combine two nuisances into one and at least give the major nuisance something to do. Why not, at - say - half past two give the wretched drum to Gilbert? He could walk around the ground banging it and (in the opinion of some) no doubt 'raise' the atmosphere. Even better, he could repeat the show at half-time. At the end of the proceedings, if United have lost, he could jump on the drum and destroy the bloody thing once and for all!

The Plainmoor Roar

One of the great forgotten elements in the history of supporting Torquay United is that of The Plainmoor Roar. Up until possibly the early to mid 1970s the 'Herald Express' would regularly exhort supporters to call up this interesting vocal anomaly. But, sadly no more. The Plainmoor Roar has probably been silent since 1972, when we last had a team good enough to hold its own in a higher division to that in which we now play. Ten, eleven, twelve thousand crowds were not unusual at Plainmoor in those halcyon years of the late sixties, and it was then that The Plainmoor Roar could be heard at its most exuberant. But now? Never. A few dozen youths and a drum cannot get near the sound and the atmosphere of those days. To us, long-lived and true supporters of United, the concept of a resuscitation of The Plainmoor Roar remains a dream that will never be fulfilled.
