Academy yes or no

forevertufc wrote: I do not the intimate details of the clubs finances either, but, when Steve Breed says the club was close to having the chains wrapped around the front door, I can only read between the lines and realise the club was in deep, deep trouble.

You of course may know more about the relegations regards youth academies than I do. However I am a qualified youth development coach (local level)in my own right, anyone on this forum who's done level 1,2 and the new youth module 1,2 that support those qualifications, will tell you, one of the things drummed into you right from the start is; football is for all.

For the that reason I do not see TUFC being topped from re-opening an academy some time down the line if it chose to do so, yes, I could see their perhaps being some restrictions on funding, but again, under the F.A's own banner of "football for all" that does not punish the club, but the kids trying to play football, so I do see it.
Thanks for that, enjoyed the discussion with you. However, we're now discussing the ins and outs of reopening the academy in some capacity but I sense it isn't part of any 5, 10 or even 20 year plan that the board may have. Which I think is a crying shame.

Brings me on to a bigger overarching point - why should relegation down one division for our first team result in the careers of hundreds of young footballs being sent to the furnace? Obviously reduced funding for relegation but it shouldn't completely bankrupt the youth system - it should be protected by governing bodies in my opinion.

Academy yes or no

forevertufc wrote:Steve it's the only way, no matter how poor. £250,000 would have be the actual cost to the club to retain a cat 3 status, £100,000 for a cat 4 set-up, if we want a competitive first team, how else ? who was going to fund it ?

Completely understand where you're coming from, and I obviously don't have a view of the club's finance - which clearly must be dire!

However, I have always wondered why TUST ruled out any involvement in the future youth structure. Sure, category 3 is unsustainable but now we've closed the academy twice we won't ever be allowed to reopen it. Ever.

Paul Cox Appointed Manager

Personally, I would be behind any kind of 'kick and rush' long ball tactics if it got us results. And as has been previously mentioned; this tactic will likely suit the limited budget we have available and to be honest - this can be an incredibly effective tactic at this level, where pitches aren't always conducive to 'tiki taka' football.

I couldn't offically say it in this article... but I think this so-called 'watered down' youth system is an incredibly poor effort to try and retain some of the talented youth players in our youth system.

The first team squad

Pleased with Cox's positive spin on the reduced playing budget situation.

Hargreaves was more of a 'moaner' when it came to discussing the club's finances. It's good to have a manager who sees it as an opportunity and he seems to be thriving on the challenge that this reduced playing budget gives him.

In Cox we trust!

The first team squad

Yes, there's going to be some football to be played!

So this is the thread where we officially return to talking about football and in particular, the first team squad at TUFC. I'm aware there's already a transfer rumours thread so let's keep this thread to talk about the players we already have signed on to our cause and how new players could well fit in to the system.

As I see it, (and this next bit is a tad optimistic!) we have a very strong spine of the team. Bowman - Young - Macdonald could well be a play-off chasing spine - if we can get the right reinforcements around them.

Also, Hargreaves did the retained list and left four or five as I remember in the 'maybe' pile depending on the financial situation - would you like to see any of them return to Plainmoor?

Brief history of Cox's career to date.

Interesting footnote in there - Other than his last half-season with Mansfield, EVERY time he has managed a club, they have finished higher than the year before.

We NEED to keep the youth system. It is just starting to show its potential and it's suddenly at risk. It's folly to sink this much time and money in to the system only to can it when it is just starting to tick in to action.

I also have a rare criticism for TUST on this. Why have they ruled out helping fund the youth set up? If helping in terms of club ownership isn't happening then I think this is the best possible use of TUST money. Personally, I'd love it if TUST offered to help out with some of the youth football costs.

Best Keeper I've seen in a TUFC shirt. Great signing for Exeter, and a sign that some of that Matt Grimes transfer money has filtered through in to the playing budget.

Thanks so much Gullscorer! The WMN website is awful for these full-page popups! Once you get in behind them there are actually some decent stories! Just drowning in adverts!
