Taunton Town v Torquay United Tues 16 April KO 19.45.

I'd be very happy with a draw.

There is some heavy rain forecast for Monday but Tuesday is said to be dry. Hopefully there will be no problem with the game going ahead but if the venue is to be changed I hope we'll be told on Monday. I've already lost one hotel cost at Taunton.

Staying Up - Relegation Battle

Sorry there’s an error in my post that I can’t edit - it should say Taunton play Hemel not Weston so both could not exceed 50 points.

Staying Up - Relegation Battle

Updated after Saturday 13th April.

Truro 43 51 -9
Hemel 45 49 -16
Eastbourne 44 48 -22
Torquay 44 47 -9
Taunton 43 45 -25
Dartford 45 43 -20
Havant 45 37 -35
Dover 44 27 -34

Much simpler now –

Beat Taunton & we are safe.
We would have 50 points with the best goal difference and as Taunton play Weston both of them could not exceed this.

Draw with Taunton & beat Havant we are safe on 51 points.
Anything less than a win v Havant would mean rely on other results.

Lose to Taunton and we are depending on other results – these are the possibilities that would see us staying up -

We beat Havant taking us to 50 points then one or more of these needs to happen:

1. Taunton lose or draw v Weston (who have nothing to play for & will also have played Tuesday) taking them to 48 or 49. Hemel have 49 so we would be safe as it would not be possible for both Taunton & Hemel to exceed 50 points and our goal difference is better.

2. Taunton beat Weston taking them to 51 points & safety. Taunton beat or draw with Hemel leaving Hemel on 49 or 50.

3. Eastbourne get no more than 2 points from their last 2 games.

So if we lose at Taunton we then need them to fail to beat Hemel, or in their 3rd game in 5 days and with their safety assured, not to lose to Hemel – or Eastbourne to fail to beat both Weston & Braintree.

It is possible that just a draw v Havant would see us safe but that would require both Taunton & Eastbourne to fail to win either of their final two matches.

Defeat at Taunton and we’re strong favourites to go down.

Staying Up - Relegation Battle

It is a worry.
I didn't feel it was a complete lack of effort but not the fight that one would expect in a relegation battle.
Plus tactics again - long ball with one shortish forward against tall defenders just didn't work.

I fear we will lose at Taunton who are clearly up for a fight. Surely we can beat Havant with a big crowd behind us but if we lose at Taunton we will also need the following:

We beat Havant taking us to 50 points.
Either -
Taunton lose or draw v Weston (who have nothing to play for) taking them to 48 or 49. Hemel have 49 so we would be safe as it would not be possible for both Taunton & Hemel to exceed 50 points and our goal difference is better.
or
Taunton beat Weston taking them to 51 points & safety. Taunton beat or draw with Hemel leaving Hemel on 49 or 50.

So if we lose at Taunton we then need them to fail to beat Weston, or in their 3rd game in 5 days and with their safety assured, not to lose to Hemel.

Hence if we lose at Taunton we are likely to go down.

Staying Up - Relegation Battle

I can’t see us winning at Taunton who are making areal fight of it but if we do we’re safe.
Draw and we’re safe if we beat Havant.
Lose and we’re relying on Taunton failing to beat Weston or beating Hemel.

Bath City v Torquay United Sat 13th April 3pm

If we get anything out of this game will be a real bonus.
A win I think would make safe but cannot see it coming with this game. Hopefully the win will come Tues.
An unexpected win today would be a huge step towards staying up but now we've had an extra point deducted we can't be safe today whatever the other results as Taunton could still catch us.

Modgull wrote: 12 Apr 2024, 19:17 Was rueing the fact that the last match may be a dead rubber but Marshall has cost us again and brought us right back into the mix.
Marshall is not primarily responsible for this. It is a club administrative matter and the club secretary is normally responsible - and sometimes resign as a result of such an error.

I think it's quite likely that Havant will be yet another Torquay last game of the season match to avoid relegation but there is also a fair chance that safety comes on Thursday without us playing if Taunton don't beat Weston.

Staying Up - Relegation Battle

Updated after a further point deducted Friday 12th April.

Hemel 44 49 -15
Truro 42 48 -11
Torquay 43 47 -8
Eastbourne 43 45 -25
Dartford 44 43 -18
Taunton 42 42 -26
Havant 43 36 -34
Dover 43 27 -33

It’s looking a lot better than it did on Saturday but the deduction of one point makes quite a difference.

Whatever the results on Saturday we can’t be safe even if we beat Bath.

We will be safe if we beat Taunton and draw with Bath or Havant.

We will be safe if we better Taunton’s result on Saturday and draw with them Tuesday.

We will be safe if we win two games and draw one.

We will be safe if we win one game and Taunton or Eastbourne lose and draw one of theirs, or Truro lose three, or Hemel only get one point from their two games.

We will be safe if we win one game and draw one game and Taunton or Eastbourne lose one of theirs, or Truro lose three, or Hemel don’t win either of their two games.

If we get just one point Taunton would have to gain 7 points from their 4 games (in eight days).

There’s some chance that we could stay up even if we lose all three games but the loss of that extra point means it may well go to the last game now.

Taunton

Farnborough – away
Torquay – home
Weston – home
Hemel - home

Dartford

Yeovil – away
Truro – home

Eastbourne

Chippenham – home
Weston – away
Braintree – away

The spectator receiving treatment recovered within 5 minutes but Bath boss, Jerry Gill, refused to bring his players back on to finish the match

Hemel not safe yet either.
They play Taunton last game. If they don’t beat Slough Saturday loser of that could go down.
Taunton & Dartford look the most likely to go.

Good result for us I think as it keeps both teams in the mix. Particularly good that Eastbourne didn’t win as they stay behind us with three games left.

A point at Bath would put us on 49, meaning that Taunton would need to get a result from Slough or we would be seven points ahead of them with a better GD.
True.
But I like to know what we need (may need) to achieve.
A point at Bath would indeed be a big help.

Staying Up - Relegation Battle

A couple of thoughts:

Slough, who have nothing to play for, have a big role in deciding relegation.

If Hemel beat Slough on Saturday then they are pretty much safe but if Hemel lose or draw their final game at Taunton could be a decider for both.

If Taunton beat or draw with Slough tomorrow and both Torquay and Taunton lose our difficult away games on Saturday, Taunton will only be 3 or 5 points behind us going into our game with them on Tuesday. If Taunton beat us then it is out of our hands as a win or draw v Weston two days later would put them ahead of us going into the last day. A draw with Taunton and a win v Havant would however keep us above them.

If Taunton lose to Slough tomorrow and both Torquay and Taunton lose our difficult away games on Saturday, Taunton will be 6 points behind us going into our game with them on Tuesday and a draw in that game would see us safe.

A point would be a good result but it's not 'must win'.
Taunton and / or Havant however could be.
Hoping for a good following although it won't match the numbers we had there last time.
