FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round v Sholing

Thanks for your updates Soton Gull ..... even from a soggy smartphone. Yes - a bright moment going into the First Round draw proper amidst the doom, gloom and chaos across the world. My 'take' on yesterday's game was that it was a thoroughly professional effort and full marks to Gary Johnson for not taking Sholing lightly by naming a strong side. Sholing would have 'raised their game' and the pitch and the dreadful weather worked in their favour. I was surprised that Asa Hall started as I thought he might have been 'rested' but he obviously had a great game. I think we expected Shaun MacDonald would play because Covolan seems to be playing with a niggly back injury at present. But full marks to Shaun on a nightmare day for goalkeepers. He hasn't played in a competitive game since the pres-season friendlies but according to the Radio Devon commentators, his handling in wet and windy conditions was impeccable, not to mention a couple of decent saves. Well done Shaun!

As well as the result, it was good to see Josh Umerah back in action and great to see Armani Little back on the field. That was an unexpected surprise. Also, Fraser Kerr on the Bench so he must be close to match fitness. Lots of plusses from yesterday. No sign of Andy Nelson though. He must have really injured himself badly walking off the pitch after being substituted in that pre-season friendly ........

Macclesfield Town have been wound up - owe more than £500,000.

MellowYellow wrote: 16 Sep 2020, 22:33 I take your point - but there is always more than meets the eye when the judiciary will not give a stay of execution. There's a long running complex history behind all of Macclesfield's woes. If you have time you can read most of It in the linked article below: https://twohundredpercent.net/alkadhis- ... ield-town/
This is indeed a sorry and complex history of poor Macclesfield's sorry woes. I am sorry to hear of the demise of the club, any club in fact, because we have had some good games against them. I think we usually beat them, but I might be remembering with rose-tinted glasses! I fear that there will be other clubs 'hitting the buffers', especially if fans are not able to return to matches in October. It all boils down to too much money sloshing around in the Premier League and this is ruining 'grass-roots' football in Div 1 and 2 and the lower leagues.

Fixtures 2020/21

Just been having a close look through the 20/21 Fixture List. Gawd - this is a punishing schedule. First match October 3rd. By October 3rd last season, we had played 14 games! Almost a third way through the season. Although the season has been extended from the end of April until the end of May, there are a lot of extra fixtures to fit in. I think clubs with small squads, or with part-time players, will struggle. There is very little leeway for matches being postponed because of bad winter weather to be re-arranged. I predict that there will be a mad scramble to re-arrange games in April and May when there are a few 'blank' Tuesdays. I feel sorry for any teams that go far in the F.A. Trophy. They really will have a backlog of fixtures to catch up on.

However, the compilers seem to have been quite kind to us as we only have two mid-week games during the worst winter months November - February (although I realise winter runs from August until June up North, Super Nicky). They are December 1st - Wealdstone (when the weather shouldn't be too bad) and February 23rd - Solihull Moors (when hopefully the worst of the winter weather will be over, and evenings will be drawing out). Solihull Moors come to Plainmoor on Nov 17th, Maidenhead on Dec 8th, Sutton Utd on Jan 26th and Wealdstone on Feb 9th.

October 3rd just three weeks away ....... COME ON YOU GULLS !!

Ha! - yes Stefano. But you must know that to qualify as a true fan of TUFC you have to be an eternal optimist. Let's hope this coming season, whatever it brings, will be one of rare seasons when you are proved right ....... ;-)

2020-21 Season Start

desperado wrote: 20 Aug 2020, 19:26 See we are 12th favourites at 20/1 with Betway for the title.
Notts County 9/2 favourites followed by Stockport, Yeovil, Hartlepool and rather surprisingly Dagenham unless they have made some big signings ? Struggled last season as did Wrexham and Chesterfield who are next on the list just because they are big clubs presumably. Don't suppose many thought Harrogate would go up at the start of last season. There's bound to be another small, unfancied club up there this time as well.
....... and who would have put any money on Barrow being promoted as champions?? Is anyone brave enough to predict what will happen next season? Certainly not me !! I think it is going to be a strange season with other clubs running into financial difficulties besides Dover. It has been very quiet about National League sides so far. I think Notts Co, Stockport and Yeovil will be front runners and Wrexham should be with the gates they attract. Not sure about Hartlepool and Chesterfield. I think Chesterfield are still struggling financially. If there is to be a small, unfancied club it could be Bromley ..... At the other end, i am concerned about Weymouth. They have lost their manager who led them back into the National League and I don't think a replacement has been found yet. Not a good start for a newly promoted club .......

I am actually quietly confident that we will do well as long as we can steer clear of injuries and our two new strikers form a good partnership. We have a settled squad with the addition of more experience in defence. This could well be a good season for us ...... let's hope so. :scarf:

Modgull wrote: 17 Aug 2020, 18:09 In fairness to Buse, Matt Hockley was a similar player and did all the dirty work allowing Alex Russell and Jason Fowler to demonstrate their skills.
Yes - I agree, although Matt Buse is no Matt Hockley yet! Let's not forget that last season was his first season as a full-time pro. He works hard and more importantly, he gets his tackles in and is a ball winner which has been lacking in our midfield, apart from Asa Hall. He was unlucky to become a victim of the 'injury jinx' that hit us hard last season. I think if he is able to stay injury free and gets more games under his belt, he could well become a surprise package next season. Time will tell of course. Obviously, GJ thinks he has potential otherwise he wouldn't have offered him a new contract.

Alan Welsh RIP

Very sad to learn that Alan Welsh had died. For those of us on here with grey hair, or none, and weak bladders, Alan Welsh was a great favourite in those heady days of Frank O'Farrell's teams in the sixties as we crammed into the old Cow Shed and made the place rock. Alan was a very good player and a perfect foil for Stubbsy. RIP and thanks for the memories, Alan.

I was saddened that the Herald Express thought it fit to only include a couple of sentences at the end of the Fans' Zone column. Alan Welsh deserved better than that. But I was pleased to see that the freebie Torbay Weekly included a much more fitting tribute to one of our Plainmoor greats. Well done, Torbay Weekly.

Season Tickets on Sale 4th August

forevertufc wrote: 09 Aug 2020, 20:44 It does not matter one jot whether the club could or could not afford to refund season ticket money, the club were duty bound to offer a refund, every season ticket holder entered into a contract with the club to attend 23 home match's at an agreed price, the fact that no season ticket holder appears to have been contacted an offered options for either a refund, credit note on 2020-21 season or to forgo their entitled refund is just plain wrong.

I've been a season ticket holder for along time now, and inline with other posters on here, and season tickets holders I know, I would have forgone my refund and asked the club to keep the money, but to have no one contact me over last season s ticket has irked me some what.

As for renewing next season, I am not going to rush into this, and that's for no other reason than what restrictions and conditions of entry, we're in the middle of a serious global covid-19 pandemic, which is effecting everyone, not just the UK, so it's not the fault of TUFC but if I have to stand there like a lemon 2 metres from the next fan, with a mask on, no use of the toilet, or Gulls nest before or after the game, and these are all potential restrictions that could be in place then there is no enjoyment factor so would not want to go.

Yes I could buy a season ticket as a way of supporting the club, am very happy to do so, but also mindful of the fact, attendances will be very limited, should I buy a season ticket with no intentions of going, then I'm likely to be denying someone who will happy to attend regardless a chance of going to the games, so while supporting the club financially , I would not be supporting the team, they'll will need as many faces in the crowd as possible.
Good post Forever. I fully agree. Like you, I am a Season Ticket holder and have not heard a dickie bird from the club. I would have also foregone any refund from last season's ticket but there has been nothing from the club offering options. The club has my email address. Just as we were beginning to think that the poor communications between club and fans was steadily improving, we are jolted back to the 'bad old days'. :'(

Thanks everyone, especially DWB. I now understand ..... I think! Sooo ...... the less games you've played, the more likely you were to get in the Play Offs. Just think - if Boreham Wood get to Wembley, their 300+ fans would have no trouble social distancing ! Come on Harrogate !!!!

National League Play-Offs .......

Can someone with a degree in Football Logic explain the Play Off arrangements for our league? I see that yesterday Barnet, who finished ELEVENTH when the season ended, beat Yeovil. And Boring Wood beat Halifax a few days ago. Are these games played on a home and away basis, or is that it for Halifax and Yeovil?

Who else is in the Play Offs, and when are the games to be played? I've checked the fixtures for the coming week, and I couldn't see that any Nat League games were due to be played. I know we aren't involved of course, but if anyone can explain this mystery, it would be appreciated - thanks !

MOTM - Chorley

Although up against a powder puff attack (the reason why Chorley are bottom of the league), our back four must take the plaudits today -
Rob Cundy - not because of his goal, but because of his commanding presence in the centre of defence
Joe Lewis - another solid game from a very promising player
Jackson Longridge - tidy, unflappable with great vision. Another very promising player.
Kyle Cameron - had a good game alongside Cundy
Asa Hall - battled away in midfield and did the less glamourous stuff.

I was tempted to put in Ben Whitfield instead of Hall, but I think Asa just deserved it.
