MOTM - Halifax

Jackson Longridge - first time I've seen him play. What a player! Never gets flustered. We're lucky to have him on loan until the end of the season. Thank you Bradford!
Joe Lewis - another solid display from a lad with promising future ahead of him
Asa Hall - did the unspectacular stuff in midfield. We missed him when he was out injured.
Lucas Covolan - safe handling and good distribution. Now nailing himself in as our no. 1 keeper methinks
Armani Little - only on for 20 minutes, but he was bossing the game until he had to go off. The tempo dropped noticeably without him.

Difficult to leave out Kyle Cameron who played very well, and Rob Cundy was not far behind.

DAVID THOMAS

dawlishmatt wrote: 19 Feb 2020, 12:26 I see that David Thomas has left the Herald Express after over 45 years of covering our beloved club. Dave was an essential part of keeping the readers of the paper updated on the comings and goings at plainmoor.
I remember as a kid, looking forward to reading his articles every afternoon and the back page was always the first page I turned to.
Have a happy retirement David and thanks for keeping us in touch with the club, when the herald express and Argyle, oops I mean Sunday independent were are only source of information.
Good post, Dawlishmatt. Thank you, David T for the many years of reporting the ups and downs and downs of our beloved team, and enjoy your retirement. Keep busy!

Young whippersnappers on here with instant reports on their phones and Forums such as this will find it hard to believe there was a time when the main source of information (match reports, new players arriving and players leaving) was the Herald Express - remember how we waited in the Paper Shops on Saturday nights for the football issue to arrive at about 6.30pm? This was pre-computers. However they did it so soon after matches, goodness knows.

In my opinion, Dave Thomas has always reported fairly on TUFC as he sees it. I haven't always agreed with his reporting, but then us football fans don't always agree, do we??? I think he has given Clarke Osborne an easy ride, but on the other hand, where would the club be without Osborne's reported £2.5 million? However, I don't think he will be receiving a 'Happy Retirement' card from Wes Saunders ..........

Next Season.

Next season - in view of the continuing alarming losses, admission prices will have to be increased. You have to ask how a club like Barrow is managing to survive and be top of the league?

Much depends on what budget Gary Johnson is allowed, but an experienced 'keeper, central defender and striker to partner Jamie Reid have to be a 'must'. It would be great if Conor Lemonheigh-Evans became available, but I doubt that very much. Frankie Vincent would be a good addition to the squad if he became available. I basically agree with Hammdog, except I would offer contracts to Nemane and Hall. Nemane seems to be improving with each game and could prove to be a very good signing, and although Asa is knocking on a bit, he's still good enough. That leaves Kalala. If only he could add better decision making and consistency to his game, what a player he would be ...... if only.

The thing is - and we've seen it season after season - players are released and new players brought in who in most cases are no better than the players who have left, although Armani Little and Ben Whitfield have strengthened the team this season. It's the dilemma GJ has to face, and he's well paid to do so.

Oh dear ...... it looks as if he's lost his way somewhat. I thought he was a better player, and had more potential, than ending up playing for Swindon bliddy Supermarine.

Even I was too young to appreciate 'tactics' in Eric Webber's time, Wivel. I just enjoyed the football. But the tactics must have worked when we shut out the great John Charles in that unbelievable 4 - 0 F.A. Cup victory over Leeds. :scarf: (black and white scarves back then! ...... and I was tomomagpie)

Keating gone, now so has Niate.
That striker Callum Morton apparently going Northampton now. They came in last minute! Let’s hope we can sign Warren permanently.
Very harsh and unfair to describe Ruari Keating as 'dead wood'. He was a big part of keeping us in the National League in Nicholson's second 'Great Escape' and he was playing very well at the end of last season until picking up a nasty injury. This season, for whatever reason, he has not been given a run in the team which he has obviously been frustrated about. I reckon we could have done with him on Saturday. Niate - nice guy, but not strong enough for this division and always prone to that vital mistake. Good luck to both of them. Any idea where Niate has gone?

culmstockgull wrote: 26 Jan 2020, 11:52 If you listen to Johnson's pre match chat he said that his starting eleven would be selected to negate their strengths and capitalise on their weaknesses, or words to that effect , it was a strong eleven but his decision making proved to be badly flawed, calling out the players in public after the match is not the right way to go about things in my book but is a natural defence when you wish to deflect blame away form yourself. He picks Nemane over Andrews when the most partisan of us would agree that Andrews even on an off day is a far better player. Second half he has Lemonheigh and Little trying to do the same job and effectively cancelling each other out. We are two thirds through the season and he still imagines that Reid can play as a lone striker, I realise as supporters we have no tactical awareness, Johnson has told us this on more than one occasion, could it possibly be that two thousand of us actually see something that he does not, perish the thought.
In my view, had Ruari Keating still been at the club and played alongside Reid from the start yesterday, with Whitfield and Kalala out wide, we would have picked up three points instead of just one against a struggling side. But then, after watching football under Frank O'Farrell, Kevin Hodges, Cyril Knowles, Paul Buckle and Leroy Rosenior, I have no 'tactical awareness' ........ :'(

AFC Fylde vs Torquay United 18/01/20

dawlishmatt wrote: 20 Jan 2020, 11:21 madmike, I'm afraid that rather than having a debate on an issue on this forum, certain individuals respond to postings they don't agree with, with abuse. If I was to say that the sky is blue, they would probably respond with insults and abuse and say that the sky is yellow. It is obvious that certain individuals target me because my views are often controversial. Nearly every post topic is turning into a slanging match and whilst I can take a joke, such as Southampton Gull's " insults", I think that it's time the administration on this site take action to prevent every topic raised turning into a farce.
That's fair enough and it's okay having controversial views if they are well reasoned which I don't think yours are. You list Steve Cooper as your favourite player (good choice by the way) so you have been a United supporter for many years. Can you ever remember such a dreadful injury list as we have had this season? Not just minor injuries, but long term injuries e.g. Liam Davis, Conor Lemonheigh-Evans, Frankie Vincent, Armani Little and now Ben Wynter. I have been supporting the team for about 65 years and I cannot remember such an unlucky season for injuires. It is bound to have an effect on team performances and confidence of players which you seem to more or less disregard.

Anyway, as long as you admit that your controversial views were misguided when we finish in the top half of the league at the end of the season, you might be forgiven! ;-)

Howdidigethere wrote: 06 Jan 2020, 20:32 The continued claims about our injury ravaged team hold no water as far as I’m concerned. We had no injuries against Boreham Wood’s 10 men first game of the season and we were definitely less than impressive that day. Followed it up with a shocker at Solihull and another home defeat to Mighty Maidenhead. Three of our home wins have been achieved when playing for a sustained period against 10 men. With the odd exception, we have not played well all season and we have done nothing to correct a fragile defence other than to keep swapping the goalkeeper behind it. We owe a big thank you to Jamie Reid but should he move on during this transfer window, where are the goals going to come from then?
We’re heading for stormy waters during the second half of the season and I for one just hope we don’t end up sinking
Someone else with a short memory. Liam Davis was missing at the beginning of the season and Frank Vincent was drafted in at left back - remember? Although he did okay, he is not a left back and no replacement for Davis. Maybe you could argue that GJ should have brought in a left back as back up. 'We have not played well all season' ......... er, weren't we within two points of being top of the league before losing key players such as Davis, Little, Lemonheigh-Evans, Vincent?

Once players start to return from injury, results will pick up. In any case, I don't think we will lose to Fylde and/or Ebbsfleet.

You should care about the cup game on Saturday. The club needs the money.

Also, Football can be cruel as we know but I can't see many so-called fans turning against a manager who restored hope to us at a time when it looked as if we could even be heading out of Nat League South at the wrong end. We will not go down this season and I hope those like you WBW and DawlishMatt have the character to admit you were wrong when we finish the season comfortably in mid-table - maybe the top half.
