Torquay Vs Plymouth - 17/7/18

CP Gull wrote: 18 Jul 2018, 10:13 A bit harsh on Sokolik there “quietgull” ... particularly as he didn’t feature at all last night! I can only assume you are basing your (low) opinion of him based on what you saw at Poole?
You are absolutely correct, apologies, so many new faces.... I have edited my post :)

Torquay Vs Plymouth - 17/7/18

EDITED POST:

Hi...

So the game last night was not overly competitive (Plymouth dominated, they just couldn't hit the target, or bass saved) but did allow for a few of the players to show us fans some of what they have in their football locker. A good attendance CIRCA 1800, I am sure many of you were there and formed your own views/opinions but for those of you that missed the game, here goes:

'it may be worth mentioning that I have done this to enable there to be comparison between two views/opinions as I see 'portugull' has left his above.

Bass - 8/10 - Will be superb for us if we keep him for the season and he is not recalled - minor criticism was that he perhaps should have done better with the goal. Made several fine saves. Likes to punch.

Wynter - 7/10 - Slow start but should make right back his own, seems to be better delivering a dead ball but could just be rusty.

Davis - 7/10 - He has speed and as you know can beat a player, but am I the only one that can see that he just can't cross a ball. If he worked on his crosses he would be deadly.

Niate - 6/10 - Very big, however a bit 'hoof and hope'.

Cameron - 9/10 - Always tough for a defender to get MOM, not really sure MOM is really purposeful pre-season, same as result is of little value....
anyway Bass got MOM and that was a good choice but my MOM would have been Cameron, definitely a superb signing, agile, good in air, passes ball on the floor.

Essuman - 6/10 - did nothing wrong, fairly consistent, as previously identified, vocal.

Gowling - 4/10 - after singing his laudits after the match against Poole, he looked disinterested and certainly not a Gowling you would want in your team.

Dickson - 8/10 - In a game dominated by Plymouth, moved ball quickly and meant midfield had little possession, Dickson showed glimpses of magic, some good passing and trickery that will be hard to come by in the NL south. MUST KEEP HIM FIT.

Nabi - 6/10 - A little lost tonight but clearly has abundance of ability, very, very unfit - probably get 60 mins max from him to start.

Banton - 6/10 - He just needs a few goals, seems low on confidence but he definitely has ability, no gel between midfield thus far, but I think that is fair considering the changes.

Williams - 7/10 - portugull hit the nail on the head! Looks like he is really enjoying his football, I hope he converts his enthusiasm to goals, if he does could be one of the top strikers in NLS.

Reid - 6/10 - His usual self... say no more!

Keating - 3/10 - Really very poor.

Pittman - 4/10 - At the moment can see why he is out of favour. Sloppy crosses after good positioning.

Other observations:
  • Why were Hall and Bobson-Bawling not playing. (Injuries to both? Rest?)
  • The ONLY trialist was naff last season on loan at Guiseley and is only a tiny bit bigger than Chaney (sorry to mention that name).
  • In my opinion we need another striker/forward for sure....
Thank you very much for reading, sorry if you found my post boring... I will try and condense in future.

Sokolik - 5/10 - losing faith in this guy, doesn't look anywhere near the player he once was for Plymouth.

Torquay Vs Plymouth - 17/7/18

Well so we find ourselves in a different league AGAIN this time round facing our local rivals Plymouth.

Whilst the game is a pre-season friendly, much is the focus on new signings and trialists as no doubt they will have a desire to impress in a bid to make the starting 11 for our first league game come August 4th.

If you do make it along tonight, observe and enjoy and keep in mind that pre-season friendlies are not about the result.

Enjoy reading the opinions and views of fellow fans.

Player Search - Who Will Turn Up?

Richinns wrote: 17 Jul 2018, 09:58 The last two players coming in are definitely bigger signs of intent to me than I was worrying we were showing last week and I agree it looks like Owers is playing a better hand with his budget than perhaps was seen last year when all the big signings arrived early and then we had to sign fillers to get the squad up to the required number (something that would haunt us with the early injuries we suffered).

Dickson in particular impresses me although it will be interesting to see how he goes in a position he has played little in throughout his career.

What is clear is we have more than enough cover for centre half and central midfield spots (with Essuman and Sokolik also able to play both). Davis also has cover but I wonder who can do the cover job for Wynter at right-back?

Wingers wise we have three it would seem (I expect Reid to be counted as this rather than a striker) so perhaps finished recruitment wise in that area.

I am sure Owers is more than aware the big piece of the jigsaw is still missing and let's hope he has something lined up in terms of a hold up/target man as if one comes in I think we will all be feeling a lot better about our chances.
:goodpost: - totally agree regarding Reid, although from the first two pre-season games Owers has seemed to pair him with another striker. We do need that big striker, is has seemed that we have struggled to find a big man for some while now.

Player Search - Who Will Turn Up?

Dickson will most likely be played in a midfield role including Hall, Nabi and Banton. Owers must see that Nabi is probably a few months from fitness and Asa has been injury prone of late, this Dickson is a good signing and looks fit. All we need now is a monster of a striker... else will be Reid and Williams and not sure that will work. Guess we may see the new defender a little in the game tomorrow.

The chap that impressed so in the Poole game was in fact the very lad we have just signed... Midfielder. - Trialist B.

Unsure of the defender, he must be highly thought of, because not figured in either pre-season friendly so far.

Martin Kuhl is gone!!!

Good luck Martin, a great shame regarding the negativity. I think it makes total sense, was never on good money at Torquay and so true that working closer to home would be more appealing.

Tried using the google face recognition to no luck.

There was a few rumours circulating, and 'one player' said his name was 'Tom' - helpful!

Apparantly been out of the game a while, but that said, looked a nice prospect.

Yep, appears they were different.

Trialist A - The lad who played full match against FG.

Trialist B - A class player who although looks unfit, would be a superb addition, vision and ability to move with ball... a must signing, apparently played overseas at higher level and had a while out of game. No idea if this is true, just hear-say...

Trialist C - As said, don't remember any significant impact.

I hope the defence can form a better relationship, not expecting them to be telepathic after 2 games and new faces but Poole should have scored at least 2 early goals.

Attack we do look a threat but Asa Hall is not going to create for us so we need the likes of Nabi and Banton to step up... or potentially sign Trialist B.

A little review with player ratings and snapshot opinion.

Having chatted to some of the players (whilst warming up as subs) and other fans I have tried to form a rounded view but in the main ratings are derived from personal opinion.

Bass - 8/10 - Made two great saves, good handling and good footwork.

Essuman - 7/10 - Would be a 6 but scored a goal. Marking was poor, definitely the loudest of the defence, gave away to many cheap fouls.
Sokolik - 5/10 - Doesn't communicate at all, seems to get pushed off the ball easily and was caught out a few times.
Gowling - 7/10 - I am not his biggest fan BUT big difference at the back when he came on.
Niati - 6/10 - Huge chap, not that quick and far to early to judge.
Wynter - 7/10 - Bit of pace and dead ball distribution sound.
Davis - 7/10 - Usual good footwork, usual poor distribution, worked hard.
Nabi - 7/10 - Would have been an 8 but for being very unfit, made us laugh a little when Martin Kuhl was 'geeing' him up, saying 'come on son this is how we get fit' - almost keeled over after 60 minutes.
Hall - 5/10 - I don't know what to say other than I am not sure he made a single completed pass.
Reid - 6/10 - The normal :)
Keating - 5/10 - Looks very low on confidence.
Williams - 8/10 - Bagged a couple of goals and kept going (for once) until the very end. Very good.
Banton - 7/10 - Glimpses of really good stuff.
Pittman - 4/10 - Time to move on...

Trialist A - 6/10 - Played full 90 against Forest Green, played half against Poole, looked ok in parts, can head the ball - defensive player.
Trialist B - 9/10 - Different class of midfielder, not fit but awesome vision.
Trialist C - 5/10 - In all honesty I don't recall so can't have been that good.

Sorry if I left anyone out, I didn't put positions as players regularly switched all over in the second half.

Pre-season friendlies and their results are irrelevant in many ways, but good to see trialists and signings in action. Game was at 75% pace, Poole were very poor and are definitely NOT a true reflection of the National League South although it was good to see that our unfit team was fitter than the Poole team in the last 30 minutes.

Far to early to be writing this team off, whether you like Owers or not, or you see a future of Osbourne chucking the dirt over the TUFC grave, lets get behind the players and make Plainmoor a really tough place for visiting teams to come.
