Had a coming together with their player in the build up to their second goal.
Didn't limp off, so possibly a rib injury or something like that. I'll be worried if we have to go with Rice for the rest of the season.

Re: Torquay United v Bradford City - 1/4/13

Just got back. Wow that was poor. Totally abject, pathetic, woeful, gutless rubbish.

Never looked like winning, even when we scored, second to every ball and totally outclassed. We looked like the away team, such was Bradford's domination.

Our goal was a fluke, but well taken. Free kick was chipped in from the left, and after a bit of a frantic scramble, Labadie drilled it into the bottom corner from about 15 yards. Good start, but we never pushed on.

Bradford were straight back on us, and equalised with a free header from a free kick. They were then in front not long after, Wells (I think) getting through on goal. Poke saved at his feet, injuring himself in the process, before the rebound was smashed home.

Then, almost immediately after half time, a cross came in from the left which Hanson seemed to head straight through sub keeper Rice and in. Game over. Can't remember us having a meaningful chance afterwards, apart from man of the match (!) Saah volleying over an open goal.

It was really easy for Bradford who, although they weren't really tested, were a pretty impressive unit. We, on the other hand, were absolutely terrible in every department. Rice was his usual flappy self when he came on, Saah and McDonald were playing too high a line and consequently beaten by every long ball and then outpaced by Wells, we appeared to have no central midfield presence whatsoever, and Bodin put in one of the worst performances from him that I've seen. Cruise was really the only positive.

Hard to believe it's the same team I watched push Northampton all the way on Friday night. May as well write next Saturday's game off - Barnet has suddenly become a massive game. Worrying that we appear to have gone backwards again, but I still believe we can do it.

Re: Torquay United v Bradford City - 1/4/13

Looking forward to this one - my first home game in ages.

Fancy us to get a win. Don't know why - just feel it will happen. Would probably settle for a draw, but a win would be great considering it's Gillingham next weekend.

Re: Northampton Town v Torquay United - 29/3/13

Just back after a marathon 20 mile journey home, and what an absolutely herculean effort from the boys tonight. Could not have asked for any more.

Northampton were a very physical, very ugly but pretty effective side. We were under the cosh for the first 25/30 minutes or so, with the Cobblers looking like scoring every time they came forward. It wasn't pretty - they bombed long throws and deep, high balls into the box at every opportunity - but they were threatening. Only a little luck and some wasteful finishing kept the score at 0-0. Platt looked very dangerous, and Angus really struggled if I'm honest. He consistently ended up on the wrong side of him and couldn't compete physically.

We looked dangerous on the counter, though, and strung a few nice moves together, and we grew in confidence as the half went on. Benyon's good work down the left and subsequent cross was very nearly turned in by Jarvis at the back post, and Jarvis followed that up shortly afterwards with a brilliant 20 yard run and fizzing shot which went narrowly wide.

Bayo was brought on at half time, which for me actually weakened the Cobblers. They were pretty poor in the second half and I think we actually had the better of the chances, with a couple of strong penalty shouts which I'd like to see again. Bayo did actually have the ball in the back of the net not long after, having been allowed a free header, but it was ruled out for offside. At the other end, more good work from Benyon and a teasing cross found Bodin at the far post, who headed just wide with the goal gaping.

A late goal seemed inevitable, and so it came in the 85th minute when Nicho was turned and beaten for pace (no surprise there), and the cross was headed in by the otherwise very poor O'Donovan. It was harsh, but certainly didn't dampen the spirit of the side, as we fashioned out a few more excellent chances. Rene fired across the goal and just wide of the far post, before Benyon put one straight at the keeper when clean through. Labadie then had a header off the line, before his shot from the edge of the area was cheekily deflected in by Rene. Unfortunately the flag was up.

So, rather annoyingly, we came away with nothing when we deserved at least a point. Northampton had more possession, and shots I'd imagine, but I still think we actually had the clearer chances. Important that we don't lose momentum now, and put it right on Monday. Play like that, and we'll win. Looking forward to being at Plainmoor for that one.

RATINGS:
Poke - 8 - made some crucial saves. No chance for the goal.
Oastler - 6 - solid. Did nothing wrong.
Angus - 5 - Very shaky. Struggled to compete physically, and consistently caught out by the high ball.
Saah - 7 - Solid. Kept Bayo quiet when he came on.
Nicho - 6 - Didn't have much to do, but crucially caught short for their goal. Cruise back on Monday please.
Chapell - 6 - Quiet. Tidy in possession but didn't see much of it.
Manse - 6 - Poor distribution but leadership was back to the old Manse. Looks up for the battle.
Labadie - 7 - First time I've seen him, and really impressed. Quality on the ball, and always does the right thing.
Jarvis - 8 - Best I've seen him play. Took the game to Northampton, and posed a real threat. Excellent.
Benyon - 9 - My MOTM. Never stopped running, constant menace, competed in the air, and a real threat.
Howe - 6 - Very subdued. Marked out of the game.

REF - Crap. Inconsistent, missed a few clear pens and could easily have sent off the Cobblers play for a really late challenge on Benyon but bottled it.

Re: Northampton Town v Torquay United - 29/3/13

Really looking forward to this one - my local game so only a 20 minute journey to Sixfields for me.

A month or so ago I'd have said we'd get thrashed this evening. Thanks to our upturn in form, I reckon we can get at least a draw tonight, if not nick all three.

Cobblers aren't a great side. They're very effective, and get results, but they aren't that good. If we can open them up early on like we have in the last two games, we could have a chance.

Aside from the having to bring Nicho back in, I reckon the only other change we should make is Downes in for McDonald (not that Angus has done wrong, just that we could benefit from Downes experience against Bayo).

Hopefully we can get something, and not lose the momentum we've built up. COYY's!!

Re: Any update on Lingy?

Agree with most of that Brucie...although it does say that Knill "would almost certainly have a role to play in drawing up United's retained list", which sounds like he'll just be assisting in the decisions rather than making them. I think getting Knill's input on it would be a good idea should Ling return.

Re: Torquay United v Chesterfield - 19/3/13

Get in! What a result! Follow it up with a win on Saturday and, dare I say it, we are looking good. Shame results elsewhere didn't quite fall for us, but most of the other teams around us have significantly tougher games on Saturday.

Labadie, Chapell, Manse, Rene and Gus all sounded immense. Starting to believe that we can do it!

Also interested to note that Lingy was at Underhill watching Barnet vs Fleetwood tonight.

Saw someone on twitter ask him why he wasn't playing and if he was injured. His reply was "dont know mate and no not injured".

Think we can take from that that it's not disciplinary. Hardly seems the sort to cause a stir anyway. Baffling.

Re: Aldershot vs Torquay

Shan't say much as I'm too angry to post coherently, and much of what I think has been said already.

That was one of the most inept and pathetic Torquay displays I've seen in a very long time - right up there with the 3-0 drubbing away at Mansfield under Leroy.

Only Leadbitter, Rene and Poke can come away with any credit tonight. The rest - in particular Stevens, Nicholson and Mansell - were utterly shambolic in every way. An absolute disgrace that any player could turn in a performance like most of them did tonight.

Tactically we were horrendous. Loathe as I am to blame Taylor - as he has had this all thrust upon him - bringing on a 0% fit Ian Morris on instead of Benyon was absolutely mental. Goes to say that Benyon shouldn't even have been on the bench in the first place. Mr Baker wasn't very impressed either. Was stood next to him on the terrace.

The first half was alright, we hit the post and had a couple of half-hearted penalty shouts - but we were so woeful in the second half that we couldn't even muster a shot on goal.

That was a performance that harked back to the bad days, and the atmosphere in the away end was absolutely poisonous (with good reason) from about 65 minutes onwards. I honestly hoped I wouldn't have to hear and see this sort of thing at Torquay again.

Knill has a big job on his hands. We are a club in freefall.

Re: Club statement

Rioch certainly fits the bill of being:

a). Experienced.
b). In the game until pretty recently (having been managing in Norway).
c). Local (not a stipulation I suppose but would be advantageous, especially from a financial point of view).
d). Familiar with the club.
and e). More inclined to take a short term role (I'm assuming so anyway, with him being 65).

Whether he'd want to do it is another thing, like SBP says it would seem he's happily retired, but I think it would certainly be beneficial if he were able to come in and lend his experience to Taylor and Herrera.

Glostergull wrote:you don't forget to ride a bike even if you haven't ridden one for many years, I doubt he has forgotten how to coach a team even though he has been out of the game for years. he isn't exactly old and he has the ability to manage players. a gift he obviously had.
I doubt he was really sacked as such. He was told that a take over was likely. The new board had thier man in mind. It wasn't his fault. he did nothing workng and I doubt the board did either. he knew the situation. i doubt there is any bad feelings over this. and how can anyone say he isn't going to do a damn good job.
The other conclusion is that you don't want his image tarnished with a return that goes the way of so many when they go back to a club they have left previosuly. In which case I fully undertsand you point of view. otherwise I cannot fathom the logicality of the argument.
Rosenior actually clarified it in an interview recently, saying that Bateson had asked him to come in as manager in the knowledge that he was looking to sell, the current consortium saw him being announced and gave Bateson the price he was looking for and he sold up. It was more like 48 hours, not the 10 minutes that has become something of a legend!

But I digress. I'm 99% Leroy is very happy doing punditry, and wouldn't fancy a return to management. I'm not sure he'd be the right man for the situation anyway, as much as I remember him fondly for what he did for us.

One name that occurred to me is Bruce Rioch. Isn't he in Cornwall nowadays? Very experienced head who could do a short-term job.
