hector wrote:I see no reason why the club cannot proceed with negotiations for Robinson, Branston et al. Whoever comes in as manager is going to inherit a fair few players anyway, so it is no problem if Robinson and Branston were signed before a new manager came.

It is so frustrating that because nothing is being done until a new manager is appointed, and very little appears to be being done in that respect as well, we are miles behind the rest of the league in signing players and behind other clubs when it even comes to signing our own players.

Just do not get what the board are up to.
Spot on! IMO any manager would be mad not to want Guy Branston down here for another year or two. The board should be sorting this out with GB. It happens at many other clubs so why not bag the pickler for another season ?!?!

WHAT A PITY that we're looking back on not just a season but an era this week after the disappointment of losing in Saturday's Play-Off Final at Old Trafford.

For over the last four years there have been many more highs than lows, and Paul Buckle left Plainmoor this week with a record which is likely to stand comparison with the very best managers in the club's history.

If Torquay United had beaten Stevenage at the weekend, he would have become the first man ever to win two promotions at Plainmoor.

Along the way, United have challenged for promotion in three out of his four seasons in charge, rising back into the Football League on an unforgettable day at Wembley in 2009.

Under Buckle they won eleven FA Cup ties, reaching the Fourth Round twice, as well as making it to Wembley again for the 2008 FA Trophy Final.

Yes, he was given an opportunity and a budget to haul United out of the Conference after taking over at the low point of 2007.

But it was one thing to be given the chance, it was another to take it.

Many other managers have been in his position at other, bigger clubs and failed.

There is a section of Gulls supporters who have never found it easy to love their manager.

Perhaps Buckle's style and his personality don't lend themselves to universal affection.

But he wasn't paid to be sweetness and light all the time. He was paid to deliver results, which he did, consistently.

And behind the feisty, self-confident exterior, there has always been a man who questions himself more than most people realise. He just doesn't let on that he does.

Some of his decisions, especially about one or two popular players, have bridled with some fans.

But he's usually been proved right in the long run. And, in football, there is seldom a good way to say goodbye.

As the late Cyril Knowles once said to your correspondent: "Hey lad, if I make a hundred decisions a week, I don't want you having a go at me for a couple I might get wrong!"

Knowles didn't make too many mistakes. Two decades and more on, Buckle's account is massively in credit.

Good luck to his successor.

Re: Seriously BR Fans - CAN WE MOVE ON!

denspad wrote:Seriously all BR fans - CAN WE MOVE ON!!

I have read countless posts about the issue of Buckle, us wanting him and then saying we don't and being accused of being fickle and now being pi!!ed off he has gone.

Hopefully for one final time - please get it into your heads - WE ARE GENUINELY NOT UPSET YOU GOT BUCKLE - I personally think you both will be a great match!

Seriously though, if you have any common sense you will appreciate that If you had a manager taking you to such a massive game as the play-off final and he had previously agreed to take the helm elsewhere prior to the play-off's you would be miffed too! - there is only one issue the TUFC fans have here - the manager knew he was going before the finals and worst of all, in the build up and even the post match interviews, clearly lied and denied any deal was done. How are we supposed to feel? Top that with the constant provocation from your fans - it's like scratching an itchy spot - it's all still very raw here. If (some of!!) the fans of the team that signed your manager then came on your forum and started telling you they were taking your players, that would probably tip you over the edge, which is why some of our fans have reacted badly in some posts very much out of character but understandable given the circumstances.

So, you have manager you want, you will sign players from Torquay you want - I don't know what else there is left for you to say. At this stage my sentiment is 'You've got me mixed up with someone who gives a sh%t'. I'm done with the past!

If you want to discuss football and have some banter, stay around it would be good to have you on here. On the other hand, If you want to provoke, goad and waste your time then I think the best advice I can give to our forum members, is to ignore your posts and DO NOT RESPOND. Being ignored is by far the best treatment.

I would have thought you would be putting your energy into supporting your team and contributing to discussions on your own board about your forthcoming season.

As for me, I'm done responding to any more BR fans unless it's polite and constructive - Surprised the admin hasn't deleted you really - but that would be the wrong thing to do!

Can you please not talk for everyone....""WE ARE GENUINELY NOT UPSET YOU GOT BUCKLE - I personally think you both will be a great match!""

hate all that big we rubbish

Far too stubborn when things aren't going right as well. Seemed to be the last one to realise Benyon up front on his own didn't work, I could easily forgive that if he was more gracious when dealing with people, found him to be a total tosser when i met him, to be honest.

What is the story with him and RL...also with Bayes...why won't anyone let on???
