Short notice, cost and not being Wembley means we'll take less than to previous finals.

Villa Park would have been a better choice for League Two play off. More central and better atmosphere with ground more full.
Agree totally. Gonna be like 2 peas rattling round in a saucepan in an 75k seater ground. Bit like wembley really :-|

Gulliball wrote:Give Buckle a rise, increase the budget, and improve the ground. If the worst happens, we'll only have to pay 1p for every £ we spend, so this is a great opportunity to spend 100 x more than we're currently able to. With a points deduction we'll find ourselves back in L2 with a clean slate, roughly where we are now, and that's the worst case scenario.
Snigger....Little dig at our neighbours (both of them) by any chance?

Re: Replacement for Buckle (if he goes)

Plymouthgull wrote:Whilst I appreciate that there are serious budget constraints for our club and the possibility that Buckle might go becuae he is ambitious, I would ask those who hold the purse strings to think in the long term. We have a wonderful opportunity to build the club to become an establised Div 1 side, a new stand which will transform the ground and attract new supporters and an exciting young group of talented players. Just possibly, we are on the brink of getting somewhat near to the golden days of the 60's ( no I am not being stupid or wildly over optimistic). We must not throw this opportunity away for the sake of balancing the books in the short term. We threw away the last opportunity in Div 1. Those up the road seem to have built upon their success (as much as I hate to admit it). We must do the same.
Maybe not being optimistic but naive though. The board can not afford to keep putting money into the club season after season. They will try and balance the books as best they can (be it short or long term) because if you dont, look at the state of your local team that, all being well, we will be swapping places with next weekend. The Greeks are only financially viable recently because they keep managing to unearth players that go for reasonable money. They run at an operating loss (according to figures i dug up somewhere) if you exclude transfers (or have done over the last couple of seasons).

Re: Greek fan at the BBC at it AGAIN!

I suppose its factually incorrect. We started the day in 6th did we not? So it was more a case that we held onto a playoff spot as opposed to sneaking in...

It'd be frustrating to not be in a position to take better advantage of those big games, but there it wouldn't be an advantage to being in League 2 because of it.
For each Wednesday match theres a Plymouth, for each Maccy theres a Hartlepool. Swings and roundabouts as far as that goes.

I doubt that. The so called "fans" you refer to, wouldnt have the IQ to realise that there are financial implications that come with playing in a higher division. They may not be insurmountable but they are still there.

Re: Lack Of Ambition and TUFC

Fonda, agree with most of that. Apart from the wage side of things that is. Even players at this level all seem to have agents, and you can take for granted that any agent that didnt get a promotion clause in a contract wouldnt have clients for long. Strange they dont like talking about relegation clauses though :)

The big problem i forsee is the reduced capacity, resulting in us not being able to capitalise on the 6, maybe 7, games that would bring sellout crowds. The figures for increased share of the FL pot vary widely depending on which source you look at but as a rough estimate, would probably cover twice as much of the wage budget as the current deal does (still below half though). The matchday income from ticket sales is what keeps us ticking over and paying the bills. If that isnt covered by fans paying on the gate, then (hopefully not though) we could find ourselves on the slippery slope...

Re: Replacement for Buckle (if he goes)

Bomber wrote:Whilst there is talk of losing our manager to BRFC, here's a thought for you. How about two ex-BRFC managers coming here with Paul Trollope as manager with Stuart Campbell as player-coach.

I feel Campbell will probably not have a future at the Memorial Stadium, regardless if they appoint Buckle or not, as they wouldn't want their immediate predeccessor in the background.
I feel next season that a non-playing assistant to whoever takes charge will be luxury we might not be able to afford if we don't get promoted, so I wonder could Guy Branston get offered a player-coach role if we are still in League 2 and Buckle is still at the helm. This could explain why he has not been offered a new deal so far.
But, I think the real opportunity for Buckle is here at Plainmoor to lead us to promotion and keep us up in League 1, which is something no TUFC has done since Frank O'Farrell. This would put him in the same bracket as Paul Tisdale, Keith Hill and Eddie Howe, prior to his move to Burnley, in terms of being the top managerial talent in the lower leagues and would go a long way to impressing Chairman of Championship and higher League 1 clubs.
Indeed. Keeping us in L1 would be a massive plus on the CV, as would us being mid table during the season when Championship teams start playing "sack the gaffer". Depends how much of a gambler he is really is though. Struggling at the bottom wouldnt look so good but then theres always the "still punching above our weight" factor to mitigate it.

Fair play for doing some research. I was going by 2009 when we had the 8th largest average. I apologise for the mistake.
Swindon on the other hand had a brilliant season the year before under Danny Wilson missing out on promotion when they lost to Millwall in the play off final and obviously Swindon fans bought season tickets believing they would have a similar season just gone, that is why crowds were higher. Swindon do not have a larger fan base than Bristol Rovers and are certainly not a bigger club.
Youve just dug yourself a deeper hole there Gas. Ive looked back as far as your promotion season from L2 (also Swindons promotion season) and they have had a higher average gate than you each season (thats the last 5 seasons).
As for your point about the money, it seems strange that with all that cash floating around, you wouldnt meet the compensation in January ?
BritishGAS wrote:Thanks Sir, Do feel free to spot any other spelling misdemeanors and mark me accordingly!!!
Always a pleasure to spread the joy of spelling =D

I have no particular interest (for or against) in other clubs that may be seeking to employ our manager. I just cant see him picking the most unattractive of the three clubs mooted on here. As I pointed out earlier, both Brentford (which he would probably take straight away) are pretty much an established L1 team, whilst Swindon have more potential (been in the top flight before, nearest local rival is Oxford so a one team town, higher attendance).

Dont take it as a slight on Rovers. Logic dictates that if he were to leave, he would be moving upwards, not sideways...

Gas, at least check your facts before posting something like this. You had the 12th highest attendance (out of 24) in L1 this season with 6253. More than Brentford but over 2k less than Swindon. That would indicate Swindon to be a much bigger club by your method of judgement.

You can find the figures on the Football League web site without having to look too hard....

Given the choice of clubs you suggest, Brentford would be the obvious one as they're in L1!! Probably followed by Swindon as they appear to have a bigger following...

Just as a matter of interest, where do you think all this cash that you have to chuck around on big wages for the manager and new players is coming from?

You didn't exactly have much to throw around in the January window and that was on L1 crowds...

edit: Oh and I think you will find "stories" is the correct spelling
