Players Under Contract

If it wasn’t for the fact that Eastleigh are a cheating, diving bunch of scumbags I’d understand why he’d go. Horrible, horrible team.

At least we didn’t have to suffer Lembit Opik or Mama Cheeky. One thing I do remember is how gracious the Southend fans were after the game.

happytorq wrote: 15 May 2023, 19:04 we won 2-1 to go up. And it was daylight robbery; we really weren't very good and Reuben Hazell got away with a nailed-on penalty. Even now I can't believe the referee didn't give it.
We deserved it because we had to endure watching the Cheeky Girls sing before the game!

happytorq wrote: 12 May 2023, 13:59 Sounds as though the Southend owner has the money but chooses not to pay the tax each time. You'd have to assume he gets some sort of benefit out of this rather than just paying it when its due - so it's a different situation to the publican who (presumably) didn't have the money to cover the VAT. At some point, though, surely HMRC will get tired of the constant rigmarole of threats, courts, and then payment?

None of this is the fans' fault - I wonder if the owner has actively been seeking to sell the club.
The other dimension to this is of course fairness. While most of us carry on paying our taxes on time, mostly at source, people like the Southend owner are just taking the piss out of the rest of us, repeatedly. You’re right re the publican, but this was his first time late, he’d had some urgent & costly maintenance to pay for in the pub and temporarily ran out of cash. While HMRC staff waste hours of their time chasing the Southend owner, they have less time to catch tax dodgers. It’s time for the football authorities to stand up and stop clubs being bought out by these kind of people.

Southend United

Sadly there are too many people like the Southend owner involved in football. Whatever fit and proper tests that existed once are clearly not applied any more. It’s very sad for the fans, who have to endure the worst of people in their lives. I suspect this bloke will pay up somehow. When I was in practice as an accountant I had a few clients who fell foul of HMRC, mostly small traders struggling with cash flow. HMRC generally treated them ruthlessly, I remember a pub tenant client late with his VAT who had a visit to remove his furniture, when I pointed out that this would stop him trading & generating cash to pay his VAT I was told by HMRC that this was a “punishment”. Yet this Southend owner goes to court repeatedly.

Yellow6 wrote: 04 May 2023, 13:38 …. Or would the EFL just relegate only one team?
It would be legally & morally wrong to only relegate one team from the EFL. The league Southend have played in during 2022/23 is the National League, if their potential insolvency happens it should surely only have implications for teams who played in that league during 2022/23. I don’t want us being saved like this, we don’t deserve it, but nor do I want Hartlepool, who were totally unaffected by Southend’s performance on field or financial shenanigans off it, saved!!!🤬🤬

The opportunity to get out of this was there. Unfortunate;y we gave away so many points. Losing to the likes of Southend, Dagenham and Wealdstone at home and Dorking away. There was enough opportunity just in those games to get the points to have seen us easily safe.

A total waste.
I agree completely.

What happened in the Pop Side with stewards? Girl taken away by police and a lot of angry people after the game.
I didn’t see that happen, but I did see the Dagenham sub who won the penalty, Sidney Ibie, run over to the Pop Side at the final whistle to goad the Gulls fans. He ran straight at the pop side, holding a finger to his lips, and then ran backwards and forwards alongside the fans to gloat. This caused some very bad feeling to put it mildly. Stupid behaviour, good job for him that Gulls fans are relatively mild mannered. If the ref had seen this I suspect he could have been red carded, I wish he had been.

Torquay United v Wealdstone - 11th March

PL21gull wrote: 12 Mar 2023, 08:50 A valiant performance by the 10 men indeed. I wondered what was the difference between Lapslie's lunge from the ground and their player's lunge from the ground to kick Halstead in the head - both going for the ball with a high foot as they were sprawled, and yet no action taken other than a late polite word?
But basically yet another team has shown us how to play modern football with passing, triangles, support, possession, control; yes, they had the extra man, but we are still playing old-style airball, hardly ever throw the ball to feet to keep possession, lack of composure and creativity. We have had most of the season to adapt and to try to improve a limited ability squad, but all we see is the same-old-same-old. Just not professional.
All fair points. It grieves me that two years ago we would have wiped the floor with this Wealdstone side. We have lost so much in such a short time.

As for the Gulls players, I thought they gave their all yesterday, never stopped trying. Full credit to them for that.

As for the Ref, dreadful. Inconsistent, useless. As was the child running the line on the pop side. Kreizmar was trained in the Woking FC training college of shithousery, diving, cheating and playacting, it showed, he conned the ref for the red. Later on he did a blatant dive in the penalty area and wasn’t even spoken to let alone booked. The attack on Halstesd was a clear red. As for the defender clutching his face after a 50:50 tussle with Jarvis! The ref of course bought this and booked Jarvis.

It never rains but it pours. We have a poor squad, poor tactics and we deserve to be where we are. Adding incompetent officials just makes it all worse.

brucie wrote: 22 Feb 2023, 14:23 Depends which way you want to interpret it. Those photos dont show that Evans had won the ball and had previously kicked it backwards. If you watch in real time it would give you a completely different interpretation. You've got to remember that the referee isnt seeing it from this view either.

He's looking at it from 10 yards away with the other Dorking player in his line of sight. Obviously hes reacted to the Dorking player screaming in apparent pain and rolling around on the ground.
Exactly that.

I won’t respond to the pig ignorant and insulting post that says “I should go to Specsavers”. We are all entitled to our opinion without being patronised and insulted.

its a yellow card, Evans wants to steal the ball by putting his foot next to it but it lands on the ankle of the Dorking player, you see his ankle bend towards the floor
I have seen it. I completely disagree with you.

I’ve looked three times. The Dorking player stuck his leg out as Evans was going for the ball. The Dorking player didn’t have the ball for Evans to “steal”! This was a minor incident, not a yellow at all.

desperado wrote: 22 Feb 2023, 10:36 Definite booking and therefore sending off, Evans deliberately steps on his foot/ankle you see this all the time in football now and I hate it.
Sorry, that is nonsense. Evans did nothing wrong, except perhaps to leave his leg trailing. The Dorking player made a huge meal of it, was up and about very quickly as soon as he got what he wanted, a yellow for Evans. The ref was easily conned, he was an idiot. THAT is what I hate to see in football now, we saw it later on when the Dorking keeper pretended to be poleaxed.

I don’t disagree with the rest of your comment, the Gulls are their own worst enemy.

Agreed, a terrible decision, made worse by the playacting from the Dorking player to goad the ref into a crap decision. The Dorking keeper did the same later in the game. I hope Dorking go down. We didn’t play well, but who knows what would have happened without the red card. I’m bloody fuming.

Obviously there’s always a few calls you could question, but that’s the nature of the game. He actually walked off the pitch smiling, unlike the others who need an army of stewards shielding the torrent of flack from the supporters.
I agree with that. He was a shining light in a sea of National League refereeing mediocrity.
