I believe the League are leaving it to individual clubs to decide whether or not to have a minute's silence. My opinion is that it's not appropriate to have one for a politician unless there had been some personal connection with the club. I can envisage a minute's silence for a non-political head of state, ie. the queen, or Prince Philip, but not prime ministers. Churchill was an exceptional case, a great war leader who was supported by all political parties at the time. Thatcher? Definitely not.

Spot on though, i commend the way the Queen has conducted herself throughout her reign and i've nothing against her but i don't wish to pay for someone to live in a big house, eat fine foods, stay in posh hotels, get the best healthcare etc etc just because of being born.

Not sure that I would either, but I'd rather have a non-political monarch than an elected political president as head of state..

There is a lot wrong with this country but for people to say it is down to Thatcher is absolute crap. Wilson, Callaghan, Major, Blair, Brown and Cameron are far more culpable for the state of this country than she ever was.

Sorry mate, totally disagree. I wasn't, and still aren't a fan of Scargill. I'm from a mining community but didn't work down the pit so can step aside slightly and could see that he was as bad as she was (he moved into a bigger house during the strike while his members struggled to eat ffs!) but none of your list shut down the pits sold off the steel industry or privatised gas/water/electricity etc.
She was totally to blame for this and more fool the gutless cabinet (yes men whom she appointed by the way, sh1t scared of her and losing their prestigeous positions) for backing her. Including todays tw@t of a prime minister!

Closing the pits to smash Scargill and the miners was quite possibly the most short sighted piece of political dogma ever thought up. The long term effect was never considered (see my other post)
Just remember she promised the Notts scabs lead by Roy Lynk the earth if they broke the strike which they did only to find THEIR pits the first to close as she knew there was no way the spineless Notts scabs would fight for their jobs. He sat in protest at the bottom of his pit when McGregor announced it was to close. They should have sealed it off with him still in it!

I haven't read all the thread yet, so apologies if anyone else has mentioned this, but this is incorrect. Wilson (Labour PM) closed 290 mines, Thatcher (Tory PM) closed 160. Whatever else you want to hate Thatcher for, the coal mining industry was finished whoever was PM at the time. Mines were closed before, during and after her time as PM.

Actually it could be argued that the country has been going downhill since (and as a result of) the second world war, and the end of empire. But at least before Margaret Thatcher we still had something of a manufacturing base for the country's economy, albeit a declining one which hardly seemed to bother about or even think about exports.

And I know (because I was alive and practically an adult at the time) that the country's situation in the seventies was not as black as has been painted and that Thatcher was definitely not the saviour of the nation. During her time the negatives outweighed the positives; if she had not been PM others may have done what she did, but certainly in a far less divisive, bullheaded and brutal manner. This is not the way of a great leader.

Anyway, I think that will be the end of my opinionated yet sagacious comments here, save to say that, although she was PM for a longer period and won three elections, Harold Wilson actually won four. Whether he was a better PM is debatable, but it should be remembered that Thatcher won the 1983 election because she had led the country to a war we could not lose and was, so to speak, on the crest of a wave..!

I don't necessarily think you need a reason to like / dislike someone. Take Robbie Williams, his cheesy gurn makes me wretch and his songs make me want to replicate Van Gogh, and i don't mean paint!
