In my opinion you need a mix of both - players who will do nothing all game and then score the most amazing goal you will ever see (Le Tissier for eg), and then you need the players who do all the donkey work, yet lack any amazing skill set - plodders for want of a better term (Milner for eg). Of course there are players out there who can do both!!

Bringing it into our sort of level, I guess you are looking at players like O'Kane v Manse v Lathrope. O'Kane was amazing at our level and was always to play in a higher league. Manse has passion, and gives the impression that he would do anything to win the game yet makes silly mistakes and Lathrope who works well in one type of system, yet struggles in another.

You are right Scott, every successful team needs a mixture but England just haven't got the creative quality needed to succeed at this level. Sure they have players like Rooney but they are just so inconsistent and lack support from other similar players in games so it becomes a case of, if Rooney isn't going to create anything then England won't. As I said, England just don't produce world class players any more and i'd say that they have only had Steven Gerrard in the last 10 years who has truly been world class.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

I would put Beckham in that category too to be honest.

Yeah I wouldn't complain about Beckham being called world class in his prime. Don't like the bloke at all but you can't argue with his quality and dedication.

Agree, all that metrosexual tosh aside, he is a fantastic ambassador for Football (see the MLS post Beckham) and for Britain. Good chap all round.

Beckham is a great example to kids. Play for football for football. Never in trouble or falling out of a nightclub. Never be a crosser of the ball like that again in the game.

agree with this. fantastic ambassador for the game, always polite, professional. surprisingly charismatic in person. Always felt that a lot of the dislike about him is either fuelled by jealousy (which would be fair enough - I know most of you people aren't as desirable as him or me ;-) ), or by being fed up by everything that gets written about him in the crappy tabloids. which is hardly his fault.

looking forward to when he inevitably returns to the States and buys a team.

I think the Confeds Cup final tomorrow will be a good game. The penalty shootout between Spain and Italy was top class on Thursday night, such a shame our players don't have the mental strength like that.

Blatter has only just realised that it will be to hot to hold the world cup in Qatar in the summer. How much is he on?

Something has to give as the Qataris have nearly all the money in the world and they aren't going to take kindly to being told to forget it are they? Meanwhile the Premier League aren't going to change their fixtures to accommodate a winter world cup are they?

As much money from Qatar and free trips than you can shake a stick at + Greedy Premier League chiefs = YES

Watch this space.

Farcical idea. If it happens I would actually like to see England and others abandon the WC. Fifa are a corrupt joke.

One for our American friends this.

It turns out that attendances in the MLS have risen above attendances for Brazilian football. My reason is that people in the US have more money than their poorer Brazilian counterparts therefore can afford to go?
