Andy, there is a bearing that the propeller runs on and these wear out causing it suck oil through it. It happens a lot. There are repair kits for them but sometimes it's easier and cheaper to find a good s/h unit.

Thanks USA, it's at the garage now anyway so i'll have to wait and see what he says once he's given it the once over. What's an s/h unit?

I've got a new one, labour plus VAT and an oil filter and oil change at £882!! Bargain!

Hell fire Andy. My JAg seems economical compared with you French heap. I will have to get you a car next time your ready to change it. I will take you to the Auctions. You can get real bargains there. I have just picked myself up a cheapo runabout at an Auction. an 09 registered Honda Jazz. With only 30,000 on the clock and that's genuine guaranteed mileage. And it was also half full of fuel too.
drove it home. wow is it quiet and smooth. a real surprise after being used to driving JAgs.

I could even have got a very good 03 registered JAg X type for £1500 with 100,000 miles. That's nothing for a diesel and even the X type can cope with a couple of hundred thousand before it falls apart.

The thing is once you've started spending on the bloody thing then it becomes more difficult to let it go as technically my car is now made up of all new parts as I've had that many things done to it. Therefore this reduces the number of further things to break.

If I bought a second hand car then I've got the problem all over again and then i'll be starting from scratch replacing old parts.

To be fair this car does a sh*tload of mileage, about 25,000 + a year so we get our money's worth I think. It's just standard wear and tear but as usual they always seem to happen at the wrong times.

I'd like a new car sure I would but unless I win a competition or I nick one then it's a dream (can't get credit so don't suggest it).

Well it's either that until I get a few years more savings under my belt or be without a car. Living 40 miles from any friends or family support (and transport) and my daughters school being 12 miles away not having a car just isn't an option. Fixing it is more financially economical than a permanent car rental or using taxis and public transport and also more convenient than the last example.

I can't just ring up a friend or family member down the road to help me out because they aren't there, they are miles away. It's catch 22 and yes i'm trapped in it at the minute but there isn't a great deal I can do about it so I have to make the best out of a bad situation USA. Like Knill should be doing!
