Nick I wasn't expecting to make the finals of course not but we have far better players than our performances suggest and on our day we can beat the likes of Sweden and Ireland (which we did at home) but it is just that when some mental toughness is needed we always fail. We were 1-0 up at half time in a game that a draw may have been enough in the end yet we still couldn't even manage that. In another recent campaign we scored 4 against Belgium away and drew 4-4 then we go and fail to beat Azerbaijan. This campaign we drew 0-0 in Kazakhstan when everyone else won there so it's just frustrating.

It is 1998 in France since we last qualified and I was just into my twenties and I have waited that long since for a sniff at qualifying. We got to a Euro's play offs I think a few years back and got mullered by Turkey when Ireland also got to the play offs and they got Latvia or somebody and won. We always get rock hard groups and draws and never get any good fortune either.

I can accept SG's jibe that we are sh*t because we are, i'm not denying that but I took your post to be condescending. I would have preferred for you to say we're sh*t too. That's fine.

For the record I was born here but my mothers side of the family all come from Graz in Steiermark (or Styria as the English call it - home of the pumpkin seeds! ).
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

Poland football fans plan to unveil a flag at the World Cup qualifying match against England, commemorating Polish pilots' role in the Battle of Britain in world war 2. I hope this will be applauded by every England fan at the game. Had it not been for the vital contribution of Polish pilots flying alongside their British counterparts, the course of the war could have been far more difficult.

Hitler's evil regime may now be consigned to the dustbin of history; Europe, and the German people themselves, are now ostensibly free and democratic; and the contribution of polish people and other Europeans currently living in the UK is recognised and welcomed. None of which diminishes the threat to freedom and democracy of the totalitarian European Union, which we and the Poles and the Germans should boot into touch at the earliest opportunity..!!

oh, and you were doing so well until you got to the last bit, managing to undermine all you'd said previously.

Quick! add something about rampant and extreme feminism - I'm playing gullscorer bingo in this thread and you've yet to mention them here.

I'm watching England and they are actually playing some really good stuff. Good movement, pace, switching play. 30 minutes gone and carry on like this and it's simply just a matter of time before the goals come.

Told you, Rooney 41 mins.

Congratulations and enjoy the World Cup.

Poland are nothing once they've been breached.

3-0 correct score.

Oh and someone remove the trumpet playing band from the stadium please or put them to sleep for the second half. I'd take vuvuzelas any day of the week over those pr*cks.

that's all well and good but the next game could conceivably see England playing the same turgid boring football and struggling to beat even mediocre teams.

I've no doubt that will happen Happy. They'll struggle through an easy group stage and when they face anyone half decent they will either lose or get to a penalty shootout and then lose.

But at least England will be there and it's something for everyone to enjoy.

I'll enjoy it too even though Austria haven't qualified. It is in Brazil and has all the makings of a cracking tournament. Looking forward to it.

I dare say we may have had a squeak with a similar group.

Lucky, lucky Mexico. Live to fight on in a playoff against New Zealand.

Mexico have been poor for most of the final stage of qualification. Coming into the last game, they needed to either beat Costa Rica, or hope that Panama lost, to ensure that they continued their record of qualifying for every World Cup they were eligible for since 1986. (although they were banned from 1990 version)

They lost 2-1 to Costa Rica.

Going into injury time, Panama were 2-1 up against already qualified USA. Somehow, the USA scored twice in the 3 minutes of stoppage time, put the Panamanians out and saving Mexico.

Typical USMNT. The one time I root against them they break my heart.

Nah, it's better this way. Their professionalism was exemplary. This way they can be no suggestion of impropriety, plus Mexico really are bad enough that I can see them getting beaten by New Zealand in the play-off; which would be just about the funniest thing ever.

If you're thinking of going to Brazil next year, watch out for the Brazilian Wandering Spider. It's the deadliest most venomous spider in the world. It normally comes out at night and can be found anywhere and everywhere over Central and South America, hence its name. You have been warned..

Just as dangerous, the high hotel costs and match ticket prices can kill your finances. You have been warned..

I saw on the news a hostel, thats normally 70 quid a night, in Rio, is going to be 450 quid a night during the WC. How anybody but the rich and famous will be able to afford to go is beyond me!!
