help with sky + repairs

Post by chunkygull »

does anybody know much about what happens when your sky + system has faults?

i havent been able to use sky + effectively for ages, i cant record one channel and watch another, the fault screen comes up. my signal on input 2 was not locked in. there are loads of programmes i want to see clashing, so i went online and looked for solutions.

i found what i was looking for and did the neccesary checks. i unscrewed the input 2 coax and found water in the connector and the input was corroded, i chopped a piece of coax off and found water in it.

my system is a few years old now. as i see it, i probably need a new box, new coax and a new lnb for the dish. i understand if sky send an engineer they do a callout with a guaranteed fix for £65 - £70, which means the new parts included etc.

however i have read sky can be very funny and reluctant about sending an engineer out, they might not include certain things and they might charge extra for them.

it is surely in their interests to keep customers happy and their equipment working.

has anybody had any experiences with sky in these matters? should i try and fix it myself or get the engineer and pay the fee, will it cost more, should i play hardball and threaten to leave and try to get it free, should i cancel my subscription and then start a new one.

can your recorded programmes be transferred from one box to another?

please help? :'(
You are my torquay, my only torquay, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know, just, how much i love you, so don't take my torquay away.

You can't transfer recorded programmes from one box to another, you might be able to dump them onto DVD though. I got a new box a couple of years ago by upgrading to HD, could be worth doing that even if you don't have an HD TV (the box will still work). I would phone them up, don't mention the water though!

Sky are utter b@r5tew@rd5, my box packed in after 12 years and they wanted £78 to come out and repair/replace it. This on top of £70+/month for their 'service'. They wouldn't bend no matter what I said, even to the point of saying 'fook you, I'll leave'. Still wouldn't do it for free.
So we left (the cheeky cnuts took a months rental notice for a service we couldn't use as a thank you farewell gift!) and got a Virgin Tivo box (which Virgin own and will repair/replace for free at any time).
Lo and behold, we are bombarded with phone calls and letters from Sky asking "why we had left", "would we come back", "we'll replace box for free", "we would have done that for free anyway" (no you wouldn't you thieving, fleecing tvvats), "come back and have everything at half price for 6 months" blah, blah blah.

Tell Sky to get shagged and get your service from ANYONE else.

(Apologies to the mods and everyone else for the language, they really have touched a raw nerve!)

Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

Our Sky signal went the way of the pear a few months ago. We phoned Sky who tried to improve the signal and to diagnose the problem whilst on the phone - I think we had error message 24 come up on our box.

In the end they sent a Sky engineer round who tested the system and replaced the whole kit and caboodle. Happy days as it kept the Herr Gruppenfuhrer and the kiddies happy and if I remember, we also got 20 quid off the install cost as well.

ooohhh, sounds good.

can i ask how much it cost to have the engineer come out and replace/repair/fix your problem.

i have read various things online in different help forums, it sounds like it helps who you get on the phone and what time of day you ring.

i have found out prices on ebay for replacement box, coax and lnb for dish, trouble is i am a bit like frank spencer when it comes to doing anything of this magnitude myself. if the sky engineer cost is about £70 then it would probably be worth doing.

From memory, we phoned them around 8pm and ended up paying around £40 for the engineer/ new install, (normal price was £60). It's well worth doing and I think they guaranteed it all for a year.

Ahahah, I'd forgotten about this. Yeah, **** hell, we all three of us live together on some random road in Plymouth. Does rather beg the question as to why it takes me so buggering long to get to school, since I only live, allegedly, 500 yards from the gates.

**** Merse, what a grotesque waste of blood and organs.
