Accrington Match day thread
I see your point stefano and raise you a 'we'd be grinding out wins or draws in mid-table (yes, League 2) at this stage under Ling'. We'll never know.
[quote="brucie The only time this season that I have seen the slightest inclination of tactical nous was when Harrop was in charge against Morecambe. He actually picked a formation that worked.[/quote]
Absolutely true!
Someone said it before i know bu the ONLY striker we have had all season that had any resemblance of a league 2 player was Marquis.
Downes should come back to partner Pearce. Downes is our best threat actually, from corners freekicks etc he is the arial threat we need. I cant be botherd to look at the stats but I would guess he is one of our top scorers which is a total joke and just proves how bad our strike force is.
I read comments on here that "he tries hard" and comments like that. I SHOULD F*CKING HOPE SO! All profesional footballers should "try hard" and "run their socks off". If they dont " try hard" sack them!
We have usually had at least one striker that had at least ONE of the following attributes Pace, heading ability, can hold up play and lay off(aka Rene), can shoot and hit the target, is tricky and create something for someone else, can ruffle up the opposition defence and is a bruiser. None of our strikers have ANY of these attributes. Yes yes yes some might try hard, I would try f*cking hard if you put me on the pitch for 90mins, and paid me 1k a week please, as well, would be nice, BUT Im not even south devon league standard so would be more than useless, BUT I would try hard! Get my point!

surprised nobodies mentioned it yet. one thing that stood out for me yesterday, was midway through the second half, poke looked to play the ball out to Nicholson who was free in loads of space, Nicholson put his hand out to say no I don't want it and proceeded to run on up the pitch waiting for the inevitable long ball!
The gulls are going up

I did see it , well spotted , it was down in front of us , he actually turned his back on poke,,, but he is another absolutely had it player like mansell, who gave these crap players there contracts,,, they are worse than crap.
the majority of torquay fans haven't got a clue about football, it shows when they clapped Nicholson on ,, and poor old danny stevens ,,,,
One can onely assume the manager is putting his squad together for next year, in the conference,
Yeoman and craig are better than the shit we keep shovelling in.

For me there really isn't anything left to say that hasn't been said before. Yesterday was inevitable in my opinion and most of my fellow regular supporters felt the same before a ball was ever kicked.
Gutless, spineless and with zero confidence, the story of most of our season. I have said countless times that the team chemistry, confidence and morale are the key factors behind our poor season and I personally think Hargreaves just does not have the necessary credentials to lift a team bereft of hope, least of all ideas.
Even in the past during epic relegation battles I have always had confidence in the spirit of the team. Not this time. Too many changes in personnel always with the hope of finding a miracle that is as elusive as a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. I have never known Plainmoor so quiet. Each week I think I can't see us playing worse and each week we always seem to manage it.
As usual next season most of the squad will have moved on, unfortunately for us it will be the fans as usual who suffer. I have never seen a Torquay side so devoid of ideas on how to actually play attacking football and with so little ability in some fundamental aspects of the game.
I cannot justify a 120 mile round trip on Tuesday night to see it all over again sorry. I just don't have it within me.

Their bloody left back (no.3) saved them 2 goals on the line yesterday, shows the value of having men on the posts (something we dont always do!)

Yes I think you are right. He did have an organised team who knew how to get points on the board. It wasn't pretty at times but it was effective. What would we give for that now? Mr Ling got us to the play-offs and then in his 2nd season we were not very far adrift of the play off places when he became ill. I was astounded when 'football reasons' were said to be the reason for his dismissal.Rjc70 wrote:I see your point stefano and raise you a 'we'd be grinding out wins or draws in mid-table (yes, League 2) at this stage under Ling'. Anyway last 5 games under Mr Knill 7 points, last 5 games 3 points. Current form would see us finish with 38 points which of course will see us bottom of the league. Of interest if we hit the form of the last 5 games under Mr Knill we would finish with 50 points and almost certainly avoid relegation.
He must have been laughing his socks off last Tuesday .......

What I also forgot to mention was that Accy had a midweek derby game against Bury in testing conditions and also had to play the most part with 10 men. In addition they had the long journey to Devon to contend with. Our level of performance in respect of this is even more unacceptable. In a similar vein, when we played at Oxford we did so having had 2 weeks without a game whilst Oxford had a tough game with Charlton a few nights earlier plus they had played the weekend before. Our performance at Oxford was also totally unacceptable. This team don't seem to have any energy about them regardless of how much rest they have and that is why I have concerns about Hargreaves. Not because he is inexperienced but is he actually a motivator? All we need right now is a man who can instill belief and passion. He certainly did so as a player but this is a whole different kettle of fish and I wondering if he is a bit too wishy washy for what is actually required. No broadside at Chris there, he is inexperienced and has taken on a near impossible task left by Knill but I'm not sure his demeanour is what we need to escape. We really needed a grizzly old head like Martin Allen. Ok so there would be no way we could ever get Allen because of finances but perhaps behind the scenes everyone is planning for the conference and Hargreaves, who won't be to blame if we drop is not too concerned as he sees his job as a long term project. I'm clutching at straws here but I'm at a total loss to explain why we are just so sh*t all the time. We've tried new players, new managers, new assistants, new formations, new starting line ups and absolutely nothing has worked sufficiently enough for us to warrant not being in the position we are in. We are where we deserve to be and I think Chris knew he would have to hit the ground running. He hasn't and now he has nobody to turn to and no experience to call upon as we hit the buffers once again. We require 2 wins on the spin to start with, a feat only managed once in 31 games.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.
