Chuck in white shorts and you have the ultimate in relegation kits........
well, we might as well blame the kit - suprised it took so long with some on here..... :}

of course the more obvious reason is that we have been sh*t.

I have been blaming the kit all season, IMO it is the worst kit in the entire football league.

hector wrote: I always liked the yellow and white stripes because it was unique. Matchwinner were the original suppliers back in '91 and it was a revolutionary take on our colours. (It was partner by a purple away kit, identical in design to one sported by Notts County) It is often linked with our promotion play-off victory at Wembley against Blackpool but sadly, what followed was a dreadful season, in what is now League 1, where Impey was sacked early on (but too late in my view), Wes Saunders was caretaker for most of the season and then Ivan Golac took over when we were virtually already down. The season after, in the same kit, we nearly went down again, with the even worse Paul Compton as manager, until Neil Warnock saved the day.

It was a unique design but was scrapped in favour of the yellow and blue (with white) hoops that we wore the season we lost to Preston in the play-offs. In fact Don O'Riordan had built a decent team on the cheap, with Goodridge, Buckle, Trollope et al. This kit was also supplied by matchwinner.

A range of templates and designs were used until around 2000 when Superleague were kit suppliers and the re-introduced the yellow and white stripes in an identical template to the previous version. I remember away to Exeter we wore white shorts with it and I liked that and it linked back to my time starting to watch Torquay (late 70s) when we wore white, with yellow and a bit of blue.

As Farmer states, there was a Save Our Stripes campaign, when the kit was up for renewal, as fans liked the fact the kit was unique. However, the kit was worn during one decent season when we finished about 9th and then the year of Barnet when we early went down. So for 3 of the 4 years we have worn that design, it has been for teams fighting against relegation. The superstitious part of me thinks we are due a relegation struggle anyway and this kit might just confirm it. Also, both times we have had it before seem to be linked to Wes Saunders. He was captain and caretaker manager the first time and then manager the 2nd time. Lets hope a 3rd time does not see a 3rd coming!!

The Save Our Stripes campaign was unsuccessful and Mike Bateson actually told me that the reason he did not keep the stripes was that unless the new design was 'different' people would be less likely to buy it. The inference being that another kit with stripes, would be too similar to the previous one and as such people would wear the old one. In fact there was some truth in this, as you did see a revival of people wearing the 1991 kit instead of buying the 2000 version as the designs were virtually identical. Yet other teams who wear stripes, eg Exeter, don't radically alter the kit each year, so there is a precedent for the use of stripes and persisting with them. However, there is little point having a striped kit for two years and then going back to, say, all yellow. I hate the way lower league teams don't respect tradition in the same way clubs like Arsenal, Blackburn, Newcastle do. You can play around with designs but keep the basic design the same.

My main gripe with the choice of G is that it appears to be the exact same template as 1991 and 2000. Why not have a modern update of the yellow and white stripes? It doesn't have to be a 90s style collar. It doesn't even have to have a collar. G looks dated. I have no problem with stripes, I always liked them, but I do have a problem with a kit that looks - not retro and cool - but simply old-fashioned and out of date.
Like chunkygull, this was my take on this kit and I thought we would struggle - but never did I dream it would be this bad.

I have a feeling this may do for the yellow and white stripes forever, which is a shame because I do like the current kit, it is just every time we wear it, we are crap. 4 out 5 seasons we have worn yellow and white stripes, we have struggled against relegation.

My thoughts on the kit are all over this thread, kind of suggested it was a car crash waiting to happen, said it before the season even started and still believe. How are the players supposed to see each other in this kit, Newcastle had something very similar as an away kit and ditched it very quickly.

Said right from the start, the players have to wear, play well, win games in the kit, not us fans, also said a lot of people who voted for this kit, are fans/people that don't actually buy the kits, judging by the amount fans you see wearing these kits around the ground, compared to others, guess I might have been right about that as well, was dumb idea letting us choose the kit.

No question in my mind that how a team dresses in a match is important and effects how they feel and perform.

Anyone recall the final day of The Open 10 years ago when Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia were the final pairing. Woods rolls up in black slacks and bold red shirt - looks the part. Garcia turns up in powder puff yellow. Looked like Batman vs. Robin , Man vs. Boy. It was game over before the first shot.

I see the same in our home kit - let's be honest, if you asked the All blacks to do the Haka in our home kit - it wouldn't scare many folks... now would it.

I would find the boldest kit we have and use it for the remaining games and make the team look the part. Lose the pale yellow kit in the wash ...quickly...please.
At the kerb halt - look right - look left -look right again - if all clear quick march!

I said it right from the beginning due to our past 2 runs with the yellow and white stripes, it looks ok but just does not work as a football kit. Dont even get me started on white shorts and socks! The socks maybe, but the shorts had to be blue. The kit just looks pansyish and washed out.

We had 3 decent play off games 23 years ago in that design that many have never forgotten, we have had 5 awful seasons with it since, Its a jinx I tells ya!

As for fans picking the kit in future I hope we do get that input again as I feel we should, we have to watch our team in it, we buy it, we wear it, we take the banter from other fans. The players supposedly chose adjustments to the design after it was picked and they chose the shorts, but why should they because players come and go, the fans remain.

The trouble with when this shirt was picked is the fact that the rest of the designs were pretty poor or very similar, I would hope next time there is better choice to be made.

Fans of Torquay United Football Club - I know we are all wanting reasons but blaming the kit for this seasons poor showing and relegation is just past the 'little bit desperate' line.
Stil - we will have the best shirt and stand in non-league next year. Something to be positive about!

No, Im not blaming the shirt on our plight, but the bottom line is that design and the kit as a whole does not make for a practical football kit.

No, the blames lies with the 2 managers we have had and the people that employed them in their role without having a proper application and interview process with other options and candidates being looked at.

But that god-damn shirt is definitely jinxed, I said it would be a part of making us struggle, bad omens and all that, the 5 out of 5 seasons stat doesnt lie.

Don't think you can blame Hargreaves. Personally i think the players are more to blame than Knill.

As for the board - they gave the majority of the fans what they wanted on both appointments so I do not hold them (and especially Thea) accountable what-so-ever.

Does anyone know if our current home shirt we had voted for is still with us next season or we getting a new one this summer? Is it a new shirt new shirt new league or we sticking with the unlucky stripes.

It usually works on a two year cycle, so we'll be keeping our home shirt and changing our away.

...although we have changed our away kit during this season as well...the light blue one seemed to appear for the first time around Christmas. Incidentally, I have seen in it Sports Direct, Exeter for less than £25, so I wonder if they are changing them again. I will be annoyed if they do after buying this season's kits.

The light blue one is actually the clubs 3rd kit
