Moyes rumoured to be getting the sack today

Post by AustrianAndyGull »

Fully deserved IMO if it happens.

Bearing in mind that Tony Pulis has accumulated nearly as many points as Moyes in the period he took over at Palace, bearing in mind that both Liverpool and Everton have both done the double over them in the same season for the first time since football began, bearing in mind they were 20 odd minutes from progressing in the Champions League against Bayern yet couldn't defend, bearing in mind their position in the table and the fact that they are a mile away from even top 4 with the same squad that Fergie won the league with plus Fellaini and Mata, bearing in mind they lost at home in the FA Cup to Swansea, bearing in mind they lost on penalties at home to Sunderland in the league cup, bearing in mind they play mind numbingly dull football then all in all i think to say he is 'acclimatising' is taking the piss.

I've got no time for Man U and it has been funny but i have even less time and respect for people who hide behind excuses for not doing their jobs properly.

He's clearly been unfit for the job so far, but for me the blame lies with the Utd board allowing Ferguson to hand pick his manager. It was obvious to all and sundry that the United squad was aging and was actually pretty fortunate to win the league last year; Ferguson knew that for damn sure. Having already built 3 or 4 separate title winning squads, his heart wasn't in it so he stepped down.

Moyes has no track record of winning anything. His achievements - such as they are - are grounded in doing ok with a limited budget. That in itself should have set alarm bells ringing for Man U fans - it signalled to me that the owners intended to reduce the amount of spending each year (the better to line their own pockets). You'd think that having given a guy a 6 year contract, they would allow him at least 2 years to see if anything can improve, but results and performances and have so abject he really has to be let go.

Part of me is convinced that Ferguson wants his legacy to be the one that people remember, so he's happy to have a fall guy to make everybody look back on his reign more fondly. It was obvious that Mourinho would have jumped at the gig if offered it...but clearly hiring a guy who has won Champions Leagues and League titles all over Europe was too sensible, and instead they went with the guy who qualified once for the Champions League - and got eliminated *before* the group stage.

As I say, clearly Moyes isn't up to it, but for me the blame has to be on the people who thought it was a good idea to hand the running of one of the world's biggest clubs over to a guy who has never won anything.

Instead, Moyes will be sacked, his name become a synonym for managerial failures, and the people in charge will continue to extract their pound of flesh every year without anybody saying anything.

Number of games won by Manchester United managers in their first 31 in charge:

Moyes - 18
Busby - 15
Atkinson - 14
Ferguson - 12
Sexton - 12
Docherty - 10

Moyes was never going to have the same success as Ferguson, especially in his first season in charge. If Man Utd are going to have as much success as they did with Ferguson, then they need to give Moyes as much time as they did for Sir Alex. From the stats, Moyes has actually done the best in the first 31 games in charge. For me, it would be ridiculous to sack Moyes.

By the same logic then Danny it would be ridiculous to get rid of Hargreaves then?

Being 24th in League Two and being 7th in the Premier League after having great success is slightly different, therefore I would argue that due to the circumstances Hargreaves and Moyes can't be compared. Moreover, I'm one of the Torquay fans who isn't wanting to see the back of Hargreaves, but that is a different story also. I hate Man Utd and glad to see them 'struggle' this year, but changing managers constantly causes unrest and doesn't help the side. It took Sir Alex a few years to bring success to Man Utd, I think Moyes should be given the same opportunity and not sacked because he hasn't had the same success in one season as Sir Alex had in nearly 30 years of management.

Fair enough Danny. I'm in the camp that expected Moyes to not do so well given the circumstances but to do a lot better than he has given his reputation and salary. Top 4 and a cup final domestically would have been fair given the squad he has at his disposal but overall he deserves the sack. If he had taken over at Barcelona and finished 8th whilst playing defensive football and getting eliminated from all cups then would he deserve to still be in employment?

Never be the guy who replaces a legend. Be the guy who replaces the guy who replaced the legend. I'm a Man United fan (please don't throw virtual tomatoes at me) and I genuinely feel bad for Moyes. The clueless owners signed off on him because Fergie told them to. Now he's getting sacked because he "lost the respect of the Glazers." If I was Moyes I'd consider losing the respect of the Glazers to be a badge of honor. Stupid Americans. Moyes was set up to fail with an aged, flawed roster. But they were champions you say! Champions of the most dreadful Premier League ever. After United's summer transfer failings City and Chelsea were always going to be better than United this year. OK, seeing Liverpool up there is a kick in the teeth and being behind Everton certainly doesn't look good for the old Everton man. But if United had invested the money last summer that they intend to invest this coming summer Moyes would have them in the top 4 and he'd still have a job. I don't believe Moyes was ever the right man for the job. But he's not the incompetent buffoon he's being made out to be. The incompetent buffoons at Old Trafford sit in the administrative offices. They gave Moyes an absurdly long contract because they knew the transition was going to be rough. And now they're bailing out after one year. They'll bring in a new manager and a bunch of new players...and still finish behind City and Chelsea next year.

Look at the squad. Top 4 is acceptable. Less is failure Americans or not, it's just excuses. Martinez at Everton built on the solid work Moyes did at Everton and kicked on. Moyes undid the work Fergie did and has flopped. Man U have better players than Everton. He is a vastly experienced football manager. Stop making excuses. He had a reasonable margin of failure and has struggled to achieve that so IMO it should be goodnight and you've had your chance.

Completely agree that he should be sacked. I don't think anyone expected him to win the league but to be nearly missing out on European football altogether is just not good enough. His performance has been abject, the football is rubbish and the current Champions look like FA Trophy semi finalists.

Get him out and get a winner in and you'll see United back towards the top again next season.
Luke.
