Mansell signs for Bristol Rovers
In my industry I'm only 3 months away from redundancy, so I know what it feels like. I have also been made redundant 3 times. At least they know how long their contracts are and can plan. I have no idea if I will be in a job at Xmas. I would be surprised if many of you on here were not in similar circumstances

You're going to have to explain that one a bit more, Neal.

What I think Neal is saying is that,
pro footballers are on a fixed term contract most with a term of 12/24 months , whereas most employees have a maximum of 1 - 3 months notice period , thus for a pro if the get released before the end of the contract they get the remainder paid up...and for our players ( not mansel) it's 12 months , but for you and me we could be out of work with only a months pay

But mansell only knew what offer he had half way through May, that's less than two months before his contract runs out...

Does this really happen, in the real world? Do normal people not renegotiate their notice periods to offer themselves protection, or go whinging to their Union every time someone farts in their vicinity?
For balance, it should be noted that ordinary footballers won't get anything like their whole entitlement when leaving a club. Of course, in the daft Premier League, players often get paid more for leaving early than they would for seeing out their contracts, but down here, where the rules still apply, that doesn't happen.

No it doesn't. I have no union etc etc. its a tough ruthless industry, if you dont perform your out, end of. And I'm sure my industry is not unique. My MD would laugh in my face if I tried to "renegotiate", even the thought of anyone doing that is quite amusing.
But back to football, it seems to me that the clubs and fans suffer more than the players. We as a group with our gate money and the likes of Thea of course are the ones who have to pay off useless managers and players who are useless.
The board with good intentions sign a manager who then signs several players on good contracts and they all turn out useless. We as fans then have to suffer seasons with smaller budgets and probably but not necessarily poor seasons. The likes of Mansel who has been a great servant to the club, but I think there is a majority opinion on here who think he did not perform last season to what we expected and to be brutal for what he was paid. Could he now rejuvenate his motivation to face what will be an extremely difficult fight next season when he obviously doesn't think what he has been offered is what he wants. I doubt that very much, but maybe he can, and will be happy to walk onto the pitch with the likes of Harding, Tongue, Hawley, Benyon who will be on league 2 money( minus 20%), I just can't see the dressing room dynamics working myself but if he does sign it will be interesting but fraut with problems in my opinion. I just don't want us to offer more or single out any relegation players for special treatment. I would much prefer a clear out and support a newer bunch of players, but I wont get that anyway because the well paid contracted players are going nowhere and I think if they don't perform well the plain moor crowd could give them a torrid time!

CH made reference to the transfer-listed players at the Fans' Forum. The inference was that they turn up at pre-season if they haven't found anywhere else; if it's working ok, they stay as part of the squad ( I presume that includes dressing-room dynamics ;I think CH would be sensitive to team morale) ; if not, they go out on loan. That should save them from the Bench Baiters. let alone the Popside Pithy Perpetrators of (Extremely Suspect )Praise. :S :}

I'd get a new job. Your workplace (and whole industry) sounds **** shit.
I don't think the money thing comes into it. I certainly don't head into work thinking about what everyone else earns.
I have always wondered about these ex-higher division players who find their way down to our level. Dave Kitson turning up at Oxford United in his Lambo while some of his team mates caught the bus. Same with the likes of James Beattie at Accrington or David James while he was at Exeter as GK coach.

Thanks for that info, that has reassured me! And am now in a better place regarding those players. Well....... CH seems to be doing all the right things, impressed so far.taxilady wrote:CH made reference to the transfer-listed players at the Fans' Forum. In an environment where everybody "really" does have to pull their own rate and the differences in wages can be so big I think it does. I agree that I don't think about what the others in my office earn but I would guess they are roughly the same as me. Also in a football match over 90mins its all there to witness the under performers its not so obvious in office workplaces.

He ain't half dragging this out, lets be honest. There can't be much interest for him otherwise we'd have a decision - either way now we have Young signed up i'm more hopeful for our chances and if Manse and Damo continue with us our midfield looks fairly solid - if not particularly inspiring
ALAN KNILL'S YELLOW ARMY !!! - Oh wait ...
I can't remember what the situation was with Harding but I would say that a midfield trio of Lathrope, Harding and Young, would on paper at least look pretty damn good for the Conference.
I'm really quite non-plussed about the Mansell situation. It seems like whether he signs or not it's not going to be the big news it may have been a few years ago.

I took it by the fact we have had no news about Poke and Lathrope that they had both left the club as their deadlines were last week.

I would agree that looks a strong midfield, unfortunately given the little amount of game time CH gave Harding not sure if it would happen. Which I think is a shame as ( prepared to get slaughtered) think that Harding is a good player , and is certainly better than Manse has been over the past couple of seasons
I think we are likely to try to play with two central midfielders and with Young on board he and Harding would not be a good pairing in my eyes. We need a tough ball winner who gets around the pitch if we are going to play 2 in the middle and neither Harding nor Young are these types of player.
