There are certain 'originals' on here that seem to think they are somewhat above those posting around them. Perhaps because they have been on here for a long time, or perhaps because they've been supporting Torquay for a long time- either way, try and have a little respect for others posting, because everyone is entitled to their views. After all, we're all in the same boat in supporting Torquay, so I'd prefer to see a little empathy or tolerance around the forum. I'm new to the site and haven't felt particularly welcomed by some.

Your point is a valid one and you're probably correct in putting it down to the length of time people have posted on here. The problem only seems to exist for newer members who are unfamiliar with the posting styles of those that have been here for a while. Try to take most things with a pinch of salt, there's a lot of humour amongst the serious debates and all round it's a pretty good place to put your views across. Hopefully you'll keep going and soon enough you'll feel more at ease with muppets like little Matt

On a slightly more serious note than my last reply, it should be noted that you've been treated firmly (in terms of having a firmly held opinion presented forcefully by an experienced poster or two), but not unnecessarily harshly during your early time here.

You kicked off with an emotive subject and one which was always going to divide opinion. For my tuppence, I think I pretty much agree that a large part of effective support of a football club involves actually turning up on a matchday, but I don't think it's impossible to be a supporter if you are, for a limited number of reasons, unable to attend matches. That limited number of reasons does not include not being able to go because you live in Surrey and decided to support Man City "because they win things". I like Dartford FC, because I have some connections to the town. I have been to a couple of games (both home and away), I always look for their results at HT and FT and I have posted on their forum (settled an argument about a dubious but not at all dubious penalty), but I wouldn't call myself a Dartford supporter, I'd say I am a fan (which, in my lexicon, is a step down). If I moved there and started going to matches and buying stuff at the club shop etc, I'd probably then feel it appropriate to call myself a supporter. I did try to give you a steer by asking (twice) for a definition of "supporter", but you missed the hint.

Anyway, this isn't about that, it's about treatment on the internet. If you think this is harsh, try signing up to Barryboys.com. It sounds like a Welsh website for homosexual liaison, but it isn't, it's all about badly modified cars. A lot of the insults are utterly childish, but they can (and frequently are) totally brutal. Within my first two posts, I'd got a keyboard full from the site owner. I gave it back to him, with a healthy dose of pre-recession level interest and now I'm one of the gang.
They say that if you're ever sent to a proper prison, the best thing to do is find the hardest bloke in there are hit him with your tray. You'll get your arse handed to you, but at least the other inmates will think you're an absolute mental and leave you well alone. The same is somewhat true here. Don't get silly, but flash a little muscle (well punctuated and evidenced muscle is best). No one minds differing opinions. For most,that's actively why we're here. What we don't like is unsubstantiated bollocks. Avoid that and we'll all get along just fine. We won't always agree with one another (not you and I specifically, you understand), but no one really minds as long as you can properly and accurately explain why you believe what you purport to believe.

Anyway, I've got work to do, can't waste my night on wimpy new fish.

In regards to posting manner/knowledge I will say that I'm only 17, so although i try to understand most of what is said, some things i simply haven't experienced yet- so that's why my judgement may seem vague or naive. You're absolutely fine torkie, as long as you learn how to fight your corner. We all laugh and joke, fight and fall out but generally, it's a friendly place to be. When you're trying to find your place on the forum though, it's probably best to avoid topics where you can alienate people through being opinionated. People will disagree and the ones who agree with you won't be drawn into defending you because they don't know you.

Keep posting though, because you'll no doubt become a valuable member of the forum if you do.

Yeah, that's only just up the road from me. The whole area is a nice little part of the world, apart from Huntingdon which looks like the back streets of London in the middle ages!

Haha I wouldnt worry yourself about subtle. If you disagree with Matt. then you disagree. Matt is the last person to be subtle. after all he is the one who wears an orange t shirt under his clothes and orange socks.. He even had a bright orange Car. I bet he has fake tans too and their well know to be orange.

Welcome to the Forum, torkie buoy. You'll be fine and your opinions are just as valid as anyone else's. However, at 17 you've got a big disadvantage - you never got to see Colin Bettany play ........
