Manse was no good at right back largely because he didn't want to be a right back, pretty sure he told Buckle as much. You have to want to do a job to be any good at it.

He spent about 3 years there though, including the two we spent in the Conference. The only other options are Robertson (who looked awkward and out of position) or Tonge (not exactly set the Club alight since he's been here). Canoville wasn't much competition either.

Tongue and Oastler are both better right backs than Manse. Neither of them are necessarily better players, but they're both better RBs. There are probably other options, but I'm about to enter a chip-induced coma. Tata.

I thought Canoville was great at RB during the first two Leroy seasons. It is odd really because I often think full-back is one of the easier positions to play but we have struggled to find a decent RB for the last decade. Perhaps Tonge is finally living up to his reputation, prior to his move here.

Oastler did not play for us in the Conference, so isn't relevant to the question posed in this thread. I know we've gone 5 games without conceding, but since he moved here, Tonge's performances have not drawn rave reviews (I just did a search of all your posts in the last 2 years for mentions of 'Tonge' and the most praise you've given him is "Tonge (not bad, probably better than Oastler)". Was a toss up between that and "was hopeless today, but he;s been alright in the main".

We just haven't had a good right back in a while, and Mansell is probably the best of them.

Face facts Mansell is a professional and he did the job to the best of his ability and it was better than the other players mentioned. :keepie:

I said many times that Mansell was overrated. Anyone missed him this season?

I think people have short memories. Mansell was one of my least favourite players but DID quite well at right back. He struggled in midfield through all seasons barring the freak 13 goal season. He was at right back during the promotion to league 2 and the playoff final season under buckle in league 2.

His gutsy tackling suited him well at rb but in mid he let us down with awful passing.
He was better than the other right backs mentioned barring canoville who had lots of ability but seemed to switch off at times. But that's a long time ago now.

Best right back for me ... andy gurney was best since I started watching us in 94
