On the eve of the new season I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone at TUFC the best of luck in what promises to be a challenging yet intriguing campaign. The wasters like Tonge, Hawley, Harding et al have all gone now and it's a fresh slate. It looks like you finally have a team of players eager to prove themselves and although many are an unknown quantity, i'd rather that than the parasites Torquay have had playing for them the past few years, that includes CH.

You've got a no nonsense manager who has seen it and done it and wet behind the ears Hargreaves has now gone for good to check his finely tailored wardrobe ready for another stint on the telly. You have a new direction instead of the charade of being led to believe you have a new direction which was the case when CH came in. You have in effect been reborn as a club and although I don't know how many of the old regime are still in situ at Plainmoor, it can't be that many. In any case, there are now people who won't be taken for idiots so it won't matter now.

Out with the old and in with the new. Old players, old managers who used to be old players, old backroom staff who have been linked to a succession of failures, just old stuff. I genuinely believe that Torquay are about to start evolving into the functional, united, inclusive and cohesive community football club they always purported to be.

Good luck all! :scarf:

Thanks Andy - and I hope York have a good season, although I haven't noticed much action in bringing in new players during the summer ? I think the general view here is of cautious optimism - there certainly seems to be a more upbeat feeling at Plainmoor. On the face of it, Paul Cox seems to have worked minor miracles bringing in what looks to be a decent set of players on a very low budget. I'm certain that none of the players is going to have an easy ride !

A mid table finish would be completely respectable for this season.

A week or so ago I was looking forward to a good start but with the Hurst, Young and Kellerman (luckily we hadn't signed him) injuries I'm now a little less confident. Still though, I'm looking forward to this season and would be very happy with 11 points come the end of August, although 7 is probably more realistic.
Finally, to echo Lucy I will be happy with a committed and hard working squad, that gives it their best in every match.
So a realistic seven points it is then! Obviously these last two results have been disappointing but in the grand scheme of things I think I am fairly happy with the progress being made, assuming of course these are just a couple of bumps along the road against two teams who be challenging for promotion in six months time, which I think they are.
On paper a much easier September coming up, hopeful of twelve points but ten is probably more realistic!

I went for 6 points in August and 10 for September. I'm not writing off this season however I would be happy with a mid to lower end of the table finish.

No need to Lucy. It unfortunately looks like I was correct first time. Like you it gives me no pleasure.

Fears about the budget were spot on ! only bit missing now is the decent manager - if he can pull off a 20th place finish it will be the greatest rescue since Dunkirk !

Over the years I have learned not to judge people, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and in certain situations some people are better placed to succeed than others, Kevin took on a difficult job at a time of turmoil, everyone has their own way of dealing with stress and pressure. I only hope he gets through this difficult period, no one will bother about anything if we get some results over the next few games. Sometimes when you are at your lowest you can achieve great things, "exceptional work ethic", "passion" and "inspiration" required over the next few games.

I wouldn't worry just yet. Seem to remember Borussia Dortmund was dead last during the winter break last season. They finished in 7th place. And Mansfield also finished strong the year Paul Cox got them promoted.

It can all change. Aaaah... those positive thoughts :)

I too have a number of years on my clock and have managed teams of diverse people for many years.

Whilst I agree it is always counter productive to jump to a "snap" decision on a person's ability, there has to be a point in their performance period when a decision has to be reached on the underlying skill set and a judgement made on their potential to achieve whatever the requirements of the job are.

Much can be made of the "tools" provided to complete the task and if they were sufficient and/or fit for purpose at the start of the undertaking, but unless the tools were inherently wrong for the task in hand at the start, it is not unreasonable to expect a "manager" to manage and prove an aptitude to adapt to the circumstances he is working with by showing an ability to improve from the starting position. That provides the performance assessors with the confidence that, whilst the current situation may be less than hoped for or ideal- in either financial or commodity terms, there is evidence that the person trying to perform has the underlying skill base to improve over time.

Whilst I have no doubt whatsoever that KN has the very best of intentions and is wholly honourable, he has yet to display, to me, enough of the underlying skills to be successful at this particular task. My experience has also shown that if you leave a person buried under stress and pressure for too long, it will only have a detrimental effect on them and the task.

Agree that great things can be achieved from great adversity, but I believe that the underlying ability has to be evident to sustain the "great leap forward" and for it not to be like a struck match - brief flash and then slowly burning out.

I believe KN is doing the absolute best he can at this moment in time, but unfortunately without considerable support and mentoring that will not be enough to stop him from burning himself out which will be a personal disaster and no long term help to the business.

This is not a call to sack him, but a personal view that he has not shown the skills required to arrest this slide, and needs help for his own well being as well as the business's. I realise that the Player's Fund has been earmarked for playing staff only, but is there an argument to consider using some of that to bring in some non playing "experience" - if only on a short term of a couple of months?

sorry to say that most of the players are not good enough to save us from relegation this season in football money talks and if you dont have it you just have to do your best with what we have and i am afraid i can only see what they are doing now going to the SDL to get players hope i can be proved wrongn
