Interesting Weekend

Post by Southampton Gull »

Accrington Stanley v Oxford Utd
Bury v Barnet
Chesterfield v Macclesfield
Gillingham v Morecambe
Rotherham v Hereford
Shrewsbury v Stockport
Stevenage v Aldershot
Torquay v Port Vale
Wycombe v Northampton

By a strange quirk of fate, all the top sides in League Two contesting the promotion battle find themselves at home apart from Port Vale who are the visitors to Plainmoor.

I can see wins for us, Wycombe, Shrewsbury, Gillingham, Bury and Chesterfield with draws for Stevenage, Rotherham and Accrington. That would set up the following weekends fixtures where all the contenders then play each other on Easter Monday. Who do people think will strengthen their position and start to move clearly into contention for a play-off/automatic promotion spot?

Has been the case in the last few weeks where the promotion contenders have generally been home or away together in the fixture list, something which has made this year more exciting than most, and indicated a strong away form could be more important than ever!!

I know a few weeks back seeing the form guide that we were one of the stronger away teams, which makes me feel positive about this run-in, yesterday just backing up that theory!!

Having seen the teams against us in our last few games, it really is coming down to the strenghth of our defence which is making the difference at the moment.

Don't write Barnet off, they are on fire.

It's silly season and not all of those top teams will win.

I think us, Accy, Bury and Stevenage drawing. Hard to say probably be wrong but I think there will be dropped points by a few of those sides.

I've just done the Predictor for the first time ever, only went as far as our game v Chesterfield, had us 3rd, 3pts clear of Wycombe, and Barnet just a point behind Burton with two games to go. I think they might just survive.

We may have a problem with Port Vale, they are still fighting for a play off spot. Also Wycombe are on good form for our following match. If we can get through those 2 with at least 1 win, then looking at Burton's poor form we should get a win up there that will give us 6 from 9. I hate to say it but I think our trip to Rotherham could be up there with our last games of the season like Southend and Leyton Orient (all those years ago). Why do I hate to say it....... because I didn't think we would get any chance of automatic promotion, so I am taking the lovely wife away that weekend, ready for the play off games.

In my opinion I think Chesterfield, Bury & Wycombe will piss the automatic places & will be comfortably above the team that finishes in 4th.

From our point of view our automatic chances could all be over by next Saturday as a draw/lose to Port Vale this weekend (Chairboys guarenteed a victory against AC Uselesshampton) & a defeat for Wycombe could leave even our playoff hopes hanging by a thread.

I think a draw in our remaining games against Burton & Chesterfield followed by a win at the Don Valley would scrape us in at 6th at the expense of Rotherham.

i can see all our rivals winning on saturday with the exception of rotherham (lose) and stevenage (draw), i think we'll just sneak past vale and stay in 5th at final whistle

not looking any further than next game, bury to win tomor too, so see them and wycombe having autos sewn up by by easter sunday

The moment our team secured the win at Bradford and Port Vale /Rotherham both drew at the weekend, next weekend's match with Port Vale took on a whole new importance to me.

The reason i say importance,is at the moment the play-off's are any four teams from seven, should our team beat Port Vale and Rotherham fail to win against Hereford, the play-off's will become any four teams from five,as both Port Vale and Rotherham will be pretty much finished as far as the play-off's are concerned.

Are Port Vale fighting for a play-off spot,no more like hanging on by a very thin thread,as they have only managed one win in there last six match's,same apply's to Rotherham,Accrington have won only 3 away all season, this could cost them dear at the end,so this weekend is a great chance for us to go a long way towards atleast securing a play-off spot .

As for automatic promotion, yes it is a big ask now, however do not rule us out of this, victory against Wycombe a week later would atleast bring us to within 2 points of them, then its on to easter monday, have you seen the fixture's for date?

Burton Albion v Torquay United 15:00
Chesterfield v Bury 15:00
Rotherham United v Gillingham 15:00
Shrewsbury Town v Accrington Stanley 15:00
Stevenage v Port Vale 15:00
Wycombe Wanderers v Crewe Alexandra 15:00

With the games coming up,it really is up to our team now, looking at these fixtures a number of wins, and what position could we be in going into the last two games?

Agree with you on Bury, not so sure about Wycombe though,i would expect them to beat the mighty cobblers, however they play us a week later, should we beat Port Vale a win for us against Wycombe would leave 2 pts behind, going into easter monday when they have the rather unpredictable Crewe who on there day can beat anyone.

And wycombe have only won 2 of there last 6,and if you go back to there last 10,you will see they have only won 3 games, these 3 wins have come against Barnet before Martin Allen turned up,and the other 2 wins were against Morecambe and stockport, this is hardly promotion form,at the moment.

Without wanting to sound too prosaic and cliched, surely we should just be ignoring all other results and focus on winning our remaining games regardless? If we win them all, we will go up. Simple.

That's for the manager and the players to think like that. Nothing wrong with us fans speculating, is there?

They've just lost Martin Allen to Notts County so they're managerless again. Could be the nail in the coffin for them now.

I honestly thing we'll draw but everyone else will win

Thats what i was thinking,of course Drummergull is correct, the club must focus on our own games,results/performances,however for us fans to look at ,and speculate on what other team's are going to do,is all part of the fun ;-)

Time to write Barnet off again - Martin Allen has left after 19 days to join Notts County.
