I'm very happy to discuss and argue about football too Dave. I enjoy the debate. I'm not interested in petty point scoring though.

Yes, you said the same thing to Matt about this "point scoring". I don't see the analogy myself, you make your point of view known, I disagree with it and state my own, you then make your observation of what I've written etc etc, I never see it as a points scoring exercise, I never look at anyone as condescending or take things personally. All I see is a debate where you clarify and quantify your opinions. Almost all of what I write is opinionated but tongue in cheek yet you see something different. Forums are full of disagreements and where I like to think this one differs is that none of us cry about it.Fonda wrote:I'm very happy to discuss and argue about football too Dave. Is that not the case?

Subject: Benners wasted at Swine-Town?
The original Old English name was swin dun, meaning "swine down", or hill that was a pasture for pigs. Some early records refer to it as Higheswindon or Swyndon super montem (= Swindon on the hill). The Domesday Book of 1086 calls it Suindune.
As an Oxfordshire resident, the Swine appellation is often used in conversation by OUFC fans.

On a different note, not absolutely sure why the OP decided to refer to STFC in the manner he has.

I agree with Matt's point above that I can't see Benyon having scored the goal Kee did at Northampton, but I think in the role he was employed in (holding the ball up and poaching goals) he was superior to Kee or Tomlin. When we've tried to use either of these in this role the ball hasn't stuck nearly as well, and while I accept that Benyon may have missed more chances I think that's in part due to him being the main recipient of our chances at the time, whereas now they're more spread about the team - I can remember at least 4 players who didn't score having an effort on goal at Bradford.
In defence of Billy Kee, I've mostly only seen him used as a substitute and didn't see any of his purple patch which was unfortunately curtailed by injury, so probably haven't seen the best of him, while I think Tomlin has been playing more of his own game in recent matches to better effect.

I'd actually like to see Kee and Benners used at the same time, Kee used in a more attacking midfielder/deeper striker role. Benners would clear up the loose balls in the box and Kee could finish them off from longer range. Not sure if it would be likely but getting Benners back on loan next season could be an interesting partnership created.
Luke.

Well **** me Chippy, you learn something every day. I did assume (80%) that you were being jovially cheeky, but it did occur (the remaining 20%) that there might be something more to it.
Regards the Elliot/Kee thing, I didn't actually mean to compare them directly, I just picked Bill out of the hat. In fairness, as I alluded to in my first post in this thread, this argument is unwinnable by either side. Doubtless, Benners is not without a bent for the game, but I don't think he was perhaps as good an all round player as his goal record would suggest, nor, since we've mentioned him, as good as Billy will go on to be year for year.
Matt.

Grella's gone back to Leeds under a cloud.. so maybe Benners moves up the pecking order. I wonder if Hart really fancies him though in a scrap for survival.

They're "better off without" him!! Seems a harmonious dressing room! :-o

OK... 6 months later.... No sign of Benners in Di Canio's sides, does he even get on the field at Wycombe?? How about asking for him back?

I'd have him back in a second. He'd be a great partner for Howe, with Bodin and Morris then on the wings.
He's not playing at Wycombe at the moment because he picked up an injury just before the season started.

Agree entirely, what we really need, as a foil for Howe, who regularly finds the net and had some class and is as strong as a bull, is a 8 stone weakling who couldn't hit water stood on a boat and falls over entirely unaided...

After 9 league games:
2010/11 F. 11 A. 7 - 14 points 6th place.
2011/12 F.15 A. 12 - 14 points 10th place.
2010/11 Went from 4th Sept. (Game 5) untill 30th Oct. (Game 14) without a win.
Just an observation.

Elliot is no longer injured and has made 8 (7 league & 1 league cup) starts this season (5 coming on from subs bench), scored a penalty in the League CupGulliball wrote:I'd have him back in a second. He'd be a great partner for Howe, with Bodin and Morris then on the wings.
