Dave Smith
Dave Smith
I heard from a Southend United friend that Dave Smith who managed the club in the late eighties(?) has passed away. I know the club is closed but I wonder if anyone has contact in the club as I think it would be nice for the club to pay respects before Monday morning? RIP

I remember Dave Smith after Argyle had beaten Bristol City 4-0 on a Tuesday night to win promotion to the old Division Two. As the evening unfolded, he was asked if he would move to a bigger club if invited. His reply was The only club I would leave Home Park for, would be Torquay.
Imagine my surprise, when he WAS appointed Manager, just as he had announced to us. A lovely man, who I got to know very well. He lived a quiet life at Wembury, a favourite spot of mine, just outside Plymstock.
Another sad loss.

I was at that game, was an amazing atmosphere to be fair with Tynan, Nelson,
Coughlan, Hodges etc running riot.
Dave Smith the sort of Gary Johnson of the seventies and eighties playing attacking football and got promotions
wherever he went, I include us though Impey got us over the line, it was his team , remember after a 3-2 Friday night win at Aldershot he had us 10 points clear at the top. Shame he couldn't do it in brief spell at his home town club Dundee.
I didn't know him like you North Curry but he always came across as a lovely bloke.
