All profits made will directly benefit Gulls legend’s immediate family Former TUFC Player of the Season Jimmy Aggrey made a welcome return to Plainmoor yesterday, as the Club finalised plans to benefit the immediate family of his former United teammate and lifelong friend Tony Bedeau. Following the tragic passing of former Gulls forward Bedeau last February, Torquay United came together with kit partners VX3 to produce a limited edition replica of the 1999/2000 that both players wore with distinction, with the end result instantly evoking memories of Tony’s 17-goal campaign, that so nearly led Torquay to the Division Three Play-Offs. With all profits made from directly benefitting the immediate family, United fans of all ages pre-ordered in their numbers, with many then choosing to wear this iconic shirt during the closing weeks of the 2024/25 season.

TUFC would like to place on record its heartfelt thanks to VX3 for their cooperation with this project, and also for their generosity in waiving all profits made from this shirt. That sentiment was echoed by Jimmy, who praised all who have come together over the past few months to remember a true Torquay United legend. “It’s been overwhelming, and I speak for both myself and the family,” said Aggrey. “The way it has been received, and the whole process from start to finish with the Club and the kit manufacturers has been so incredible. “Seeing people wearing the shirt has been surreal. After the Hemel Hempstead match, I left Tony’s family house and drove to Reading services. As I looked up, I saw Torquay fans who had left the game and it was a sea of Bedeau shirts, and I had a moment. I phoned Tony’s brother Keith and told him this, and he was so touched. “It’s power to the club, the manufacturers and the amazing fans, who have spent their hard-earned money in purchasing this wonderful shirt, which also bring back so many wonderful and unforgettable memories.

“I know the family would like to express their sincere gratitude and love to what has been created here, in honour of their beloved son, brother, uncle, father and partner. It’s incredible.” Having made his debut for Torquay as a 16 year-old at Cardiff in 1995, Tony went on to remain with The Gulls for the next decade, and earned a richly deserved testimonial match against Plymouth in 2005. After departing for Walsall the following summer, Bedeau returned to Plainmoor for the 2007/08 campaign, making a total of 374 appearances in all competitions, scoring 65 goals, in additional to winning international honours with Grenada. For Aggrey, it was a successful trial period following his surprise release from Fulham that sparked his own memorable spell on the English Riviera, and after making an eye-catching debut in a 1-1 draw at Scarborough in the autumn on 1998, Jimmy would go on to become a true fan favourite with the Yellow Army, culminating in him being crowned at TUFC’s Player of the Season in 2001, with his four-year spell seeing him play 110 games and 2 goals. It’s clear the Club continues to hold a special part in the heart of the former Yellows defender.

“Me and Tony had both been Chelsea FC Schoolboys in the early to the mid 90, and before that, played together in the same Borough Of Hounslow District team and Middlesex County team. “By the time I’d made by debut at 19, Tony had amassed some 80-90 games. At that age, that was amazing, and he was the benchmark. We went on to play League professional football together here for four years and remained close, and he is godfather to two of my children. We have a shared history together, and we had the best times here. “When you have a family member that plays football elsewhere, you’re unaware of how impactful their family member has been there. “I think that’s been highlighted by how Tony has been viewed, respected, loved and remembered.”
