Why would a Chairman do this?

Post by Dave_Pougher »

The following is taken from BRFC forum

http://www.brfcforum.co.uk/index.php?/t ... nd-choice/

(quote)
If rumours are correct we were alerted to Buckle's appointment by a sighting of him at the Mem not only with Higgs but with the Torquay chairman, who has been extremely fair in all this. I live in Devon and saw the speech he made on our local news after the playoff final which was honest and frank. It allows Torquay to get someone in and build for the season. Now I would imagine that taking Buckle in Jan would be a lot less amicable and would definately be more expensive. Perhaps the deal was done back then with Penny taking the helm til the end of the season - who knows? If Higgs genuinely felt we could stay up in December (and why wouldn't he?) then perhaps taking Penny on with the knowledge that compensation money could be used to strengthen the playing squad seemed a better move at the time. (end quote)

Not looking for somebody to lynch here but I would really like to know why our Chairman would get involved in negotiations like this, particularly traveling to the club that wants to take the manager. Not sure even Bateson would have tried to smooth things over when there was money to be made. Like I said not looking for a blame game here but why would the Chairman get involved like this at the most crucial time of his tenure?

Of course like the quote says it's only rumours?

If he "was" there then I would expect it was to discuss compensation and a timeframe. Of course, it could just have been his agent.

Ok I accept that Dave, but I think most on here would know what they would have liked the Chairman to say and he didn't have to travel to Bristol to do it.

It certainly is a different approach to that taken by Leyton Orient Chairman Barry Hearn when a couple of Championship clubs came sniffing for his (under contract) Manager Russell Slade and it will be interesting to see how they fare as a club this season as reading between the lines it appears that Slade isn't too enamoured at being denied the opportunity!

Well it seems that we gave Buckle gift wrapped to Bristol Rovers, was really nice for our chairman to travel up there too. What's next, Eunan O'Kane & Zebroski on a buy one get one free deal for 10K?

I'm pretty sure that Bucks' had something in his most recent contract along the lines of that the club would not stand in his way if there was an approach for him by a bigger club.......If Bucks wanted to meet with BRFC then there was little that TUFC could do.

To be fair if the Chairman did accompany Buckle, perhaps then he is one of those people that like to negotiate face to face, can be far more effective - it has to be said he did a damn good job of negotiating our settlement, a damn sight more than the published figure (so I'm led to believe).

My guess on how the whole thing went on;

1) BRFC contact Buckle's agent to sound out if he's interested - early basic negotiations start. (5-6 weeks ago?)
2) BRFC (allegedly) then speak to Buckle himself (or maybe his agent) on the phone (maybe several times)......negotiations gather pace and in the end are probably completed all bar dotting the I's and crossing the T's.
3) BRFC officially contact TUFC to make an approach for our manager, we know he wants to go, we possibly try and convince him to stay etc. but to no avail - Chairman accompanies Buckle to meeting to discuss our compensation, Buckle signs pre contract agreement. (3 weeks ago)
4) BRFC pay us 1st instalment of compo. (2 weeks ago)
5) Our season over.......officially signed and sealed and announced 24 hours or so after OT.
....aka jmgull.

OK, I accept that those of us that are not in buisness (because thats what we are at the end of the day) on a day to day basis are probably unaware of how these things are done. But I'm just not comfortable with our leader/chairman being complicit with a major competitor and the most crucial time of his tenure.

I dismissed the idea that the PO final result was what the club really wanted out of hand as ridiculous, but when you hear that events like this have taken place then it does make you wonder. Lots of supporters spent a lot of money to attend that fixture and you wonder whos side, on that day, our chairman was on.

I know when someone is upset, and I spoke to the chairman after the game and he was genuinely gutted.

Well I'm glad to hear that, genuinely I am. I have nothing but respect for them all of them. It's a thankless job that ultimately costs them a lot of money.

I'm not so sure of that mate, some of them seem to be tighter than a ducks arse if you ask me. You'd be surprised at how long it is since some of them put their hands in their pockets.

I just hope the compensation issue did not extend to an agreement relating to certain players! The silence from Plainmoor over contracts is deafening.

Been told by a friend of a director that it was the compensation that was sorted back along and the amount is more like £100k than the £50k reported. No reason to doubt him.

Good business if you ask me!

If thats true then it's good buisness, even if that involves paymant in kind players ect.
To be honest I'm more concerned about their inaction now re players and manager just wish they were as active now as they were then.
