Well, what a fantastic day that was. One of the best away days I think I've experienced as a Gulls fan. Have to say a huge thanks to Dave and Paul for the lift to Bristol, although not so much the arrival into Bristol ;-)

The Wellington was a great choice for a meeting place, excellent cider and by the look of some of the food that was coming out, excellent food. Nice to meet some of you from the site, hopefully I'll bump into you at a few more matches this season.

Glad the T-shirt was well received by both sets of supporters, the offers still up Rovers fans!! ;-)

Also, well done to everyone who made the trip, we were loud and rocked the Mem. Don't think I heard the Rovers fans sing once. Buckle up to his usual self, taking off his best players. Get used to it Rovers fans. Bevan is a quality bloke and I'm happy that he joined in in our banter. I'm sure he'll get a good reception back at Plainmoor.

Got back home at 8.45 and listened to Buckles interview on the computer. You could just hear the disappointment in his voice and when he congratulated us, you could tell it hurt him. Seen the FLS this morning and can't stop smiling.

Anyway, time to look forward to Tuesday night. I love the away trip to Aldershot as the atmosphere between both sets of fans is normally brilliant. Let's cheer the yellow army on to another three points.

TAKE THAT BUCKLE!!! :~D :scarf:

Have woke up this morning and questioned - 'Was it a dream?'

I know too much emphasis has been placed on this game so early on in what will inevitably be a long and probably dramatic season, but it just goes to show that teams can rarely buy success. What really matters is a friendly, committed loyal and supportive fan base, coupled with great player chemistry and team spirit. This is what I think was on show yesterday, the players absolutely wanted to win that game and who could blame them.

The phrase 'People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones' springs to mind when considering all the confident postings of the Bristol fans over recent weeks. The expectations of Bristol Rovers as a club on results and their manager is far higher than that of Torquay. I think a mid-table finish for us again this season would be a good result (however I do think we will do better than this) but I feel really relaxed in saying that with a somewhat 'Kay Sera Sera..' type of attitude. I am not sure the same can be said of BR and I think this pressure will tell on and off the pitch as the season progresses.

I think it is time for a reality check, no single team will walk the league this year given the strength of some of the teams in this league this season. I would like to see fans from other teams showing respect to fellow fans at the very least - I always see Torquay fans humble in defeat which is why I consider them the best fans in the league. Humility is a good character trait to have.

I tweeted to Rene Howe how well I thought he played and he responded 'Thanks, its nice to be playing regularly' and I am beginning to really like him. I think the more full games and the fitter he gets, the better player he will become.

Just a word to all the fans on the terrace with us yesterday, what a great atmosphere with all the singing and smiling - something missing for some strange reason at Old Trafford. Oh and to both teams what a great and exciting game of football. It's a shame we need to wait so long for the return leg.

It's nice to drive home with a smile on your face and want to hug your wife when you get home - what a funny game football is.

So glad I've managed to recover this, NickGull would have quite rightly killed me!! Top matchday topic start mate!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Memorial Stadium
Saturday 13th August
KO: 3pm

Our first away league match of the new era takes us back to the new stomping ground of our old boss. A lot has been said about the way his departure occurred, most of us pissed off at the timing of it. However, there is a much more positive vibe around Plainmoor now, in my opinion. The full backing from us, the supporters, has been turned back to the man in the hotseat, which seemed strangely lacking while it was occupied by Buckle - I don't think he ever won over every Torquay fan, despite the promotion and success he brought the club. I was never his biggest fan, so in a way I'm glad he's gone and we can move on. Which we have done, by bringing in Martin Ling. [Here I would go on to talk about the signings, pre-season and all that jazz but it's been done by Matt, on the Burton thread, so I'll move on].

GULLS NEWS.

No fresh injuries for us. Dan Leadbitter suffers another setback, so he won't be in the squad. Billy Kee returns from International duty having hit a hat-trick for Northern Ireland u21's in the week, meaning that Ling has a tough decision, as it's been suggested that Atieno and Howe worked well together at St Marys on Tuesday night.

THE OPPOSITION.

Onto tomorrows rivals, Bristol Rovers. They've had a whole revamp since Buckle started working at the Memorial Stadium. Several players have come through the doors, while several have moved on for pastures new. Here's a quick review of all the comings and goings at the MemStad, and what we're likely to be up against tomorrow.

Starting off at the back, Buckle has signed two keepers. Scott Bevan holds the number 1 jersey, as he did for us last season. We know all about the tall goalkeeper, having seen him play at Plainmoor for the past few years. His backup is Lance Cronin. The 25-year old has appeared 7 times at England C level, having spent four years at Ebbsfleet, making 176 appearances. In that time, he picked up an FA Trophy Winners Medal, in 2008, as Ebbsfleet beat us at Wembley. Last season, he was at Gillingham, where he made 7 appearances.

Onto the defence, then. Michael Smith is a young rightback, signed from Irish side Ballymena United. Smith, who "has high potential", is looking to further his footballing ability at the MemStad, to help him create a fruitful career in the game. Michael Boateng, also a young right back, joined Rovers in the summer, after a successful trial. Onto the left side of defence now, we have Lee Brown, who was signed from QPR in the summer. Having made one appearance at Loftus Road in 3 years, and spending time at Salisbury and Hayes & Yeading, he has made the permanent move to Bristol to gain some more experience and playing time. Gary Sawyer is a more well-known name to some of you, I'd imagine. The experienced left back has spent time at several Westcountry sides, since starting his career at Plymouth Argyle. He has been to Weymouth, Exeter, Bristol City, before permanently moving to Rovers. He made 37 appearances for the Gas in League One last season. Into the heart of the defence, I'll start with Cian Bolger, a youngster on loan from Leicester. Bolger spent time at Rovers last season, making 6 appearances, and he has made the same move to further his knowledge. The expected central partnership is made up of Byron Anthony and Adam Virgo, both well known to the lower leagues. Anthony has built a good career at the MemStad, making 133 appearances so far, since joining in 2006. Virgo, appointed vice captain, has signed after rejecting a new deal at League One Yeovil. A central defensive brute, similar to Guy Branston, has had a successful game higher up the pyramid, once sparking a £1.5m move from Brighton to Celtic.

Moving on up the field, now to the midfield. In the engine room, the two big names are Craig Stanley and Matt Gill, both of whom are new to life in Bristol. Both should be quite recognisable names to Gulls fans, for different reasons. Stanley was a key instrument in our charge to the playoffs last season, and was so close to joining us again, but unfortunately opted for Bristol and life under Buckle once more. Matt Gill, another who's previously worked with Buckle, but his path is somewhat longer and windier than Stanleys. Gill & Buckle worked together at Exeter, but after Buckle took the reins at Plainmoor, Gill moved on and joined Norwich. Two years at Norwich saw him make 12 appearances, and he was loaned out twice in the time - once to Peterborough, the other to Walsall. Gill is well known for becoming the first player to receive a red card at the new Wembley Stadium. As backup, they have Stuart Campbell. He has been a stalwart at the MemStad for several years, and he also had a stint as manager, in a last ditch attempt to keep the club in League One, which didn't pay off. He has made 258 appearances, in 7 years, since joining in 2004. Wayne Brown is a young centre-mid who joined after being released by Fulham. He has spent time on loan at Brentford, TPS Turku and Rovers, before making the permanent move. In 23 appearances, he has scored 3 goals. As recent as today, they also had Chris Lines on their books, but he has moved to Sheffield Wednesday. On the wings, they have several outlets. Firstly, we know that Chris Zebroski, Mustapha Carayol and Jo Kuffour can all play there, having seen them do it in the past at Plainmoor. All 3 are speed merchants, and all have the ability to skin their opponent, so we will need to be careful, as I would even go as far as saying this is one of Rovers' strongest areas on the pitch. Adding to those 3, they have Joe Anyinsah, who has carved a career out at a higher level than he is now. His most prominent spell was at Carlisle, where he made 59 appearances, scoring 16 times. Last season he was at Charlton, before moving West to Bristol.

Finally, onto the attack line. Zebroski and Kuffour can both cause mayhem in the middle, aswell as on the wings, so it'll be interesting to see if either take part in the front line tomorrow. However, two more shrewd signings have created a fearful front line for this division. The experience of Scott McGleish will be vital for Rovers, in my opinion. He scored one and set up another at Kingsmeadow, on the opening day of the season. A true journeyman, in every sense of the word, McGleish has been at 11 clubs. Since the turn of the Millenium, he's turned out for Colchester, Northampton, Wycombe, Leyton Orient and now Bristol Rovers. The veteran knows where the net is, and he'll be looking for one more prolific season before hanging up his boots. The other striker expected to start is Matt Harrold. We know all about him, from our recent two-legged playoff success over Shrewsbury. Personally, I've never been worried about lining up against him, as whenever I've seen him, he's been shocking. I'm hoping that continues tomorrow. In reserve, Rovers can turn to Ben Swallow, Lamar Powell, Eliot Richards or Kayne McLaggon, but neither of them have much experience. Swallow is the most experienced, having played 40 times in the blue and white quarters.

So there we have it. That's what we're up against. A little further, I don't know if it'll interest any of you, but if you don't want to read all that, heres a list of the "Ins and Outs" over the summer.

http://www.thefootballforum.net/index.p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... -20112012/

HOW THEY LINED UP.

This is how they lined up at Wimbledon:

Bevan

Smith
Anthony
Virgo
L. Brown

Anyinsah (Carayol 70)
Stanley
Gill
Zebroski (Lines 52)

Harrold
McGleish (Kuffour 62)

Subs: Bolger, Lines, Carayol, Kuffour, W.Brown

HEAD TO HEAD.

Bristol Rovers wins - 33 (28 in League)
Torquay wins - 21 (19 in League)
Draws - 16 (13 in League)

It seems Rovers have the upper hand in this fixture, as things stand. This is also the first meeting between the two clubs since 2007, where we lost twice at the Memorial Stadium, both by a 1-0 margin (once in the JPT, once the League). I remember many meetings between the clubs. In 2003/04, where we edged them out 2-1 at Plainmoor, before bottling a 2-0 lead at MemStad to draw 2-2. The next meeting, we somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, at Plainmoor, leading 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining, leading 2-1 with 3 minutes remaining, yet somehow we contrived to lose 2-3. I remember seeing Rovers fans go absolutely manic that day. (How much I'd love for it to happen for us tomorrow!!)

REF WATCH.

JONATHAN MOSS
Ashley Slaughter and Neil Radford
Fourth Official Carl Berry

Jonathan Moss is the referee for this affair. An experienced official, having spent 5 years in the profession. He refereed the League One playoff Final at Old Trafford last season, so has good pedigree. He also officiated our narrow defeat at Chesterfield, and from what I remember, there were no dodgy decisions, so I'm hoping he has enough about him to control tomorrows game.

PREDICTION.

Errm, 2-goal margin either way.

COYY!!

---------------------

Hope that's not too much to read. Any complaints and I'll be more than happy to deal with. Cheers!

That's a good read Nick.

The stand out players for us this pre-season and from the opening game are Michael Smith, Matt Gill and Joe Anyinsah.

Smith for me is a fantastic player for this level, he is a very attacking full back, he can beat his man and has great crossing ability, expect him to be playing at a higher level in the near future, a fantastic prospect, his only real weakness is his defensive positioning, because he likes to get forward, he can leave gaps at the back.

Matt Gill is the engine room, and has the ability to control the midfield and dominate games, Joe Anyinsah if he keeps himself fit, is far to good for this level, he is quick, powerful, can beat his man, and has proved that his goalscoring record is not to shabby for a wide man.

I cannot wait for the game tomorrow, and hopefully my bet with Dave(Southampton Gull) will go in my favour.

I think it's going to be a cracking game, with a cracking atmosphere, from what I have heard it may well be a 10k plus crowd.

A great read Nick!

I can't wait for this one now!

I think the result will be a draw, 1-1 I predict with Howe getting the goal.

Big support and a big noise needed from the Yellow Army!

Excellent as always, Nick.

Yep, we're nearly there. The game we've all been waiting for since the fixtures were published. I think the atmosphere will be cracking all round the ground and I hope both sides give us a real classic game of lower league football at its best.

Keep that £30 warm BG.

Really looking forward to this. The atmosphere is going to be electric in the stands and hopefully that'll translate onto the field.

I hope the referee has his head screwed on, as I feel this could have the potential to boil over. A lot of the players are going to be fired up with a point to prove.

One thing I will be interested to see is kind of hard to explain without sounding bitter - my perspective is that if the boot was on the other foot (i.e. we were the club who had signed another clubs manager and players) and we were at home against said club, I would thoroughly expect TUFC to lose it as thats what we do. I guess I'm kind of saying we've had a tendancy to buckle (pardon the pun) under the big occaisions - Crawley, Stevenage, City to name but a few. What I'd be interested to see if thats a curse that follows TUFC around, or Buckle. Perhaps it is this scenario that has led both managers to play the significance down.

I suppose thats me just clutching at straws really! I think tomorrow will be fairly high scoring affair, particularly with our somewhat suspect backline. Its one of those days where I'd happily take a draw if offered it now, but knowing our luck we'll get that draw having been leading into stoppage time or something.

A few thoughts from listening to the game.

A fantastic result from a huge match. It's only 3 points, but it was the most important 3 points we'll win this season. Rovers have an excellent squad, and they will be in the mix for promotion at the end of the season. To go there and get a result is a massive confidence boost to our players (and supporters), not to mention a great gift from Dinger and the players to our supporters, to get one over Buckle so soon. We shouldn't focus too much on him, but after the way he treated our club over the summer we were naturally keen to get the better of him. And whilst the day wasn't about him, it was an added bonus! Reckon that result meant a lot to certain people in our dressing room too - i'm thinking specifically of our match-bossing midfielder who's enjoying a new lease of life in the position he favours. How sweet for the skip.

I thought we had it all to do to get a result yesterday. My one hope came from the fact that whilst Buckle had done a good job of inspiring our team when our backs were against the wall, he consistently failed to get results when there was real expectancy from our support. On many occasions he was found wanting in the big games when our team was favourite. He consistently made questionable decisions in those games. Evidently he's taken that with him. Unfortunately for him, he's at a bigger club now, which means more expectancy and more pressure. When he's manager of Man Utd, the pressure will be even greater too...

It does look like that Football League chap is something of a jinx. He turned up at Southend with us last season when we were 4 games unbeaten, and witnessed a terrible performance from us. Particularly nice to win after the build up he'd given them yesterday.

Sorry to hear adverse comments about the Rovers support - but law of averages suggests they will have a few idiots. They have a big support, so naturally you don't have to look so hard to find some idiots. Our support is tiny, and we've got a few that show themselves occasionally.

Hopefully this reuslt was be the spring-board to further succes for our side. We certainly already look too good to be amongst the strugglers - but there's still work to do to get us amongst the challengers. Buckle has constructed a squad that is plenty good enough to contest the promotion places. The question is whether he has the tactical nouse to win enough of the games they should win. As for Lingy, in his next interview i fully expect him to say "you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"
"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something."

Did anyone else notice at the end of the game when all the Torquay Fans were singing "Martin Lings Yellow Army" that Manse put his arm round Shaun Taylor and pointed at him. It seemed to me that Manse wanted the fans to appreciate the work of Shaun. Also Manse looked very very HAPPY

Haha yes, I had to video towards the position you were standing because most of the chants started there and most of the noise started there!

I was going to introduce myself to you yesterday, but I guess I got too excited when the final whistle blew, and I had family and friends that came to the game yesterday and I didn't stand with them so I went to talk to them at HT, didn't want to be rude!

I'll be at Aldershot on Tuesday and I'll introduce myself to you then, if I remember and if your there on Tuesday of course.

I think I'm actually at fault for the site crashing, any time I make a large amount of posts in one day, it crashes. Between this and the last crash, I've lost around 110 posts! Dagnammit!

pleased to hear that Dave. Always seemed like a genuine guy, and had a good game yesterday - even gave us a penalty, torquay through and through, the big fella !!

Cracking day out really enjoyed it. Watched the FL highlights and enjoyed that just as much. Wife even made a comment at the end of the highlights "who was the idiot waving his shirt above his head" 49 I've gotta grow up someday! Like others have said it is now time to move on.......................But (you knew there was a but) I find it a bit sad that on the Rovers forum they have decided to remove the "predict the score against Torquay thread" never mind, maybe I've missed it lol

Ta ta Buckle you won't be missed.

Couldn't make the game so naturally i was gutted but happy we won obviously. The result was a complete shock for me especially when i saw that Stevens was again given a starting berth and a glance at our bench told its own story with regards quality and depth. Ling has started really well and if you consider the fact that Burton at full time on tuesday held Burnley away and drew at home with shrewsbury yesterday then a 2-2 draw we got with them on opening day may not seem like points dropped now. We may have underestimated Burton. We played well at Saints, drew level and were unlucky to ship 4 and then came the rovers game. On top of the moon at the minute and we can take great confidence into the game with aldershot believing we have nothing to fear from anyone in this league. WELL DONE MARTIN AND THE LADS!!
