£1 milllion for Billy Kee?

..... ok, so maybe he's (Peschisolido) not quite saying that exactly, but it just goes to show how much the free scoring Kee's valuation has risen since we sold him for a paltry £20k! Given that he wasn't getting a game here - I think the final straw for him was probably when Atieno was picked ahead of him for the opener - and given the fact that he wanted to go "home" I don't think we had much option but to move him on, although in hindsight surely a 3 month loan arrangement would have left us in a far stronger position to negotiate a decent transfer fee (to Burton or whoever) for him in January? Can you imagine what sort of bids might have come in for him then if we were trying to sell ?

Anyway the good news in all this, as confirmed by David Thomas in the Herald on Thursday, is that we do have a big fat (sorry Billy) sell on for the lad - a tasty 35% of any future profit. So that means, by my maths, that if Burton were to get £100k for him we would end up with £48k in total (i.e. to include the £20k we already got for him). In fact, it's only when the figures starts to rise above that (£100k) that we start to lose out in relation to how much Burton make on him i.e. if they got £250k then we would get just over £100k for ourselves (Burton c £150k) .... and if he really did go for that magic £1million then we would end up with a very healthy £363k (Burton though would be ££s in) !!!

Slight pedant alert, but Kee was actually picked ahead of Atieno on the opening day. In fact, the game turned in our favour once Atieno was brought on for Kee.

Although it's all very annoying watching him bang them in - and I'm sure Burton can't believe their luck - there was absolutely no indication in his time with us that he was going produce this kind of consistent, goal scoring form. The bid was on the table to take him there and then, and given our financial position I imagine Ling had little option to accept. The Billy we had was never going to score 11 in 10 or whatever record it is, so at least the club had the good sense to put a significant sell-on clause in. In that case, let's hope he continues to bang the goals in and gets us a big chunk of cash sometime soon.

Not being pedantic at all - thank you for correcting me. I wasn't at that game and thought from memory (always dangerous) that he didn't start but as you quite rightly point out he did start, only to be replaced by Atieno .... he (Kee) was then "benched" for the next few games and only briefly reappeared as a substitute under Ling from then on in.

Like you say Jeff, it's unlikely he would have scored so many in our team as in all honesty I don't think he would have fitted in to our new system.

Although it pains us to see him scoring so regularly for his new club, as DT points out in the paper, it really is good news in terms of what we might make on him in the future.

Brucie, first of all im not saying his potential appeared over night as he went back to mum and dad, but if kee were still here where would you play him in the 433 system, as a wide striker? where its essentially a winger with the allowance to cut in and strike, billy wasnt good enough in that position, we saw that under buckle. what we saw of him wasnt good enough to replace howe as the central figure and when we played 442 which would have accomodated him we were awful. In all honesty im quite happy hes gone on and is happier, as he would be another bench warmer here at the moment. Aslo as people say long may his goalscoring record continue albeit he can be suspended against us (keep praying) so we get some decent money.

I always felt Kee had the potential that he seems to be realising already. I was disappointed when he left and maybe it was never going to happen for him here but even when Benyon left, I still felt we had the better player in Kee.

I'm quite pleased to see him doing so well as for us he was constantly played out of position and never given a long enough run in the team. I just in case anyone thinks I am being wise after the event, on the thread below I may made feelings clear when he was sold.

I dont think anyone can blame him for asking for a move once it was appeared he wasnt going to figure in the starting 11.
He needs to be playing every week to have a high enough profile to get picked up by teams higher in the pyramid.
As for him playing on the wing, when Burton go 4-3-3 then he is usually out wide with Zola in the middle.

Wouldnt fit into our style of play?
With 11 goals this season so far, the manager finds a system that accomodates someone that prolific. Playing off Howe for more than one game would have been a start.

Kee has been banging in the goals since he joine Burton yes, but how does a few months of free scoring in league 2 make you a million pound player? Craziness. He is having a hot streak which will end at some point soon because it always does with average footballers. Not having a go a Kee as i loved him being at Plainmoor but he isn't better than league 1 at best when fully fit. There ain't a hope in hell of him selling for even a fifth of that amount. Who knows what will happen, his goal spree may abrubtly end and then he may struggle and end up going out on loan to another league 2 club. That is the more likely scenario than him going to a biggish club for a million. Is it April 1st?

100% correct. he was never really given a chance here and we are paying for that now. I always thought he would score a hatful given a run in the team and was gutted when we sold him without ever giving him the opportunity he deserved.

At the Old Trafford playoff match, I bumped into his mates from Leicester who were there to cheer him on.

Down here he was "Billy no mates".

He recent goal scoring feats prove he is happier being closer to home and I wish him well in his future career.

It seems a strange quirk of fate that this is a role reversal from Guy Branston’s move to us from Burton.

He failed at Burton and yet turned out to be a short term legend for us.

Billy Kee failed for us (albeit he suffered from Buckle management, and then did not really get a decent run under Dinger).

I hope Pesky Solid Oh is right and we get a decent bit of wedge when he moves on for a million.
