Could We Have Hoped For A Better March?
So, 8 difficult games in March, or so we thought this time last month. 19 points out of a possible 24 and we are STILL flying. One defeat to the current league leaders has not stopped us as we have now won 2 on the trot at the most important part of the season (The business end). I make it 12 goals for and 6 against and 1.5 goals per game with 2.37 points per game. Surely this is Automatic promotion form! The form table for March sees us top of the charts for the month as well. Realistically how many of us looked at these fixture and thought "i'd be happy with 11/12 points"? i know i was! We've beaten Crawley, an inform Aldershot who kept winning after we beat them, Tough long away journey's saw us beat Rotherham and then hammer Burton. Then a defeat to Swindon saw some of us looking a bit more over our shoulders at "The chasing pack". Then came a decent Port Vale team to plainmoor, in fact they were more than decent, they outplayed us for 70 minutes and we still come out on top. So to last night against Barnet, another 1 nil win, another below par first half performance but never the less 3 points! Just wanted to say how proud and happy i am to be a Torquay fan and to all my mates in Leeds who have teased me for years about supporting a "sh!t team" all these years, Up yours lads!! Torquay United are going up! well done to everyone at the club and of course, Long Live The Ling!!!

Yep, had a really good month. I'm sure all of us would have taken 19 points from 24!

We could have hoped for a better March, but I'm extremely happy with the way things turned out..

Completely irrelevant, but can someone, anyone, please explain where the confusion arises between 'have' and 'of'? I see it more and more as time goes by and it confounds me every time. I simply don't understand how the word 'of' with it's very clear and simple meaning could possibly fit into a sentence in place of 'have', which has a different meaning entirely. This is like replacing the word 'grandmother' with 'erectile dysfunction', there appears no logical basis for it.
Back on topic, no, not really, a massive haul of points which keeps us where we all want to be (the Chairman aside, of course). We were always going to lose to Swindon, really, I'd have been HUGELY surprised had we beaten them. They are the best team going, but then, they bloody well ought to be. I was always fairly confident of doing well in our run in. I think we will continue to win games and go up automatically, because I genuinely believe that we are one of the three best sides in L2 this year.
Matt.

There is a perfectly logical explanation, Matt. It's the current obsession with teaching phonetics instead of correct spelling. Our language is being sodomised.

Could have.. Could 'ave.. Could av.. Could ov.. Could of.. As Dave says, it's due to poor education; writing simply and slavishly the way people speak. But the way most people speak is often incorrect, with bad diction and poor pronunciation, and incomprehensible regional accents and dialects sounding like foreign languages.
It's all a sign of a general failure to maintain standards. Western civilisation is in decline.
But the Gulls are going up..!

well being from Yorkshire there are many words that i've just grown up with not saying, for example "The", I never say it. it's always "Am off (tut) shop" or "am off (fut) paper". In terms of Could and Of i do realise it is grammatically incorrect however if i was to speak "Could we have had a better March?" then it would sound like "Of" and not "Have" which is where i made the mistake. As you can see i've rectified that mistake now and hope that you dont think that all of us "Young ish ones" are thick, its just how my part of the world speak. If i'd HAVE grown up down South then I could HAVE turned out different

'If i'd have grown up..' is grammatically incorrect. You could of said: 'If I had grown up..' or (if you want to be posh) 'Had I grown up..' in the context of your intended meaning. Get it right, or people might misunderstand you.
Could be the difference between an indirect free kick and a penalty, innit..?
