Accrington

Post by Smithys »

Hi all,

Sorry to make this petty post but its a pet hate of mine, Geographical errors.

On friday I was in the Babbacombe End and the singers constantly sang anti-scouse songs! Then on 2 occassions 2 different people asked were Accrington was, before I was able to comment another guy said, Liverpool! :@

Im orriginaly from the area and Accrington in near Blackburn and Burnley and a good hour drive from Mersyside.

Sorry, its a pet hate of mine!

Completely agree Smithys. As someone who is obsessed with maps and the little idiosyncracies of our little island i too get annoyed when people don't know what i consider the most basic of geographical and cultural knowledge. It's like someone from Sunderland saying that Torquay is in Cornwall. Worst of all are women on TV Quiz shows who when asked the capital of a country they then proceed to answer by naming another **** country!! Or when they get asked what county a particular town is in then say Leeds or Hull or another city. CITY, COUNTRY, COUNTY - STOP GETTING THEM WRONG!!!!
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

Geography, along with history, is my least comfortable area of general knowledge. As silly as it sounds, I only know where towns and cities are because if following Torquay. I still get a bit lost around that non descript but of Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire etc, but I'm sort of ok with places in general now.

Still baffled by history though.

I get that a lot being in the States. sometimes American's think England is so small that everywhere is right next to everywhere else.

I once had the following conversation.

"Where in England are you from?"
"Devon"
"Is that in Wales?"
"No, Wales is a separate country from England. Devon is in the south-west"
"oh. I have a cousin from the south of England. He's called Dave. Do you know him?"

I worked in the States in 1989 and someone I worked with claimed to have been asked "England? Is that in France?"
