A total joke?

Aussie, he took a Swedish club to the Champions League final, how the hell can you call that a joke? He took Fulham to their highest place in the Premier League for God only knows how long and took them further in the Europa League than Ferguson and Mancini could do with either Manchester club. He's also just guided WBA to safety with games to spare on a smaller budget than Villa offered McLeish. He's a good manager, he's very aware of the european way of playing and I reckon he would do a fantastic job, so laugh your arse off, who will the socceroos appoint next, Ricky Ponting?

Hodgson is a much better choice than Redknapp once you get past the insane media bias in favour of 'Arry.

Hodgson is more experienced internationally and more knowledgeable about tactics and opposition teams. He should also be seen as a better long term manager as he is less chummy with the golden generation. With Redknapp we would be in for more of the same from Lamps, JT, Stevie G etc etc. The same old overhyped egos that have let England down time and time again.
The Euros are going to be very tough whoever we have as manager, getting out of a hard group which includes a France team that has nothing in common with teh striking mess of two years ago, an always decent Sweden and a pumped up host side without Rooney for the first two games will be a significant achievement in itself. Then we are likely to play Spain in the second round. We need a manager who will get us through a tough tournament then rebuild a side for 2014 where Terry, Ferdinand, Lampard, Gerrard etc are replaced by Cleverly, Jones, Sturridge, Wilshere. There is no way Redknapp would move on from these players as they are all his mates.

having said that Hodgson seems to be more of a trainer than a motivator so will face a challenge in reorganising a side in a short space of time and as the media love Redknapp the knives will be out from the first friendly.

If Hodgson is really brave he will not take Terry, Ferdinand and maybe one of Lampard/gerrard to the Euros. He could definately do without the endless captain debate and the wounded pride of John terry. Parker should be captain.

Team should be:

Hart

Richards, Cahill, Jagielka, Cole

Parker, Barry

Walcott, Gerrard, Young

Welbeck/Rooney

As Sexy Gulls says, I actually think this is a really good appointment. Though the media will pile pressure on him like no tomorrow, and if we have a bad tournament they'll want him out.

BARRY?!!!!!!!! You can't select someone with a Christian name as a surname! AND he's shit too!
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

I have always maintained Barry is a joke of a footballer. I'm not sure he should be Premier League, let alone England starter!! I can name a number of people i'd prefer CM ahead of Barry, who offers little, if anything, to a team. He can't really pass, not a great tackler but people mention him as he ''gets stuck in", in that case chuck Chris McPhee in!!

Players who could play CM for England ahead of Barry:
Carrick
Huddlestone
Mark Davies
Lampard
Rodwell
Danny Murphy
Bradley Johnson
Barton
My Mum.
Maybe one day, Carayol will find London...

I'm surprised you rate your Mum so lowly :)

Can't stand Barry either, I reckon Jones at ManUre could make a decent holding midfielder.

Barry's all right really. He's one of those players that doesn't really do anything, so if the team plays well then it's assumed he's an integral cog in the machine. If the team looses then hes a useless waste of space. He probably does do something important but I wouldn't bet on him to grab a game by the scruff of his neck.
Carrick is better passer, as is Cleverly. When he's fit again Wilshere will be the best CM we have.

Jones should be a Centre back, just because he can pass the ball doesn't mean he should be thrown into midfield, besides a CB who can get forward is a great bonus to have.

Just baiting it up a tad, going by the private message I was sent by someone without the bollocks to say who they were, I would say it`s interesting right now but hey I really don`t think he`s good enough for the job. This is why I larf, he`s hands are already tied to a degree in who he can select because they`ve already been selected and he hasn`t got time to build everything up enough! It ain`t so much him, it`s them, the F.A, they haven`t managed this at all well as per usual. Lucky if they make the quarters! Very lucky!

Walter Winterbottom anybody ?

In 1978 became Sir Walter Winterbottom.

The only England manager to manage England through four consecutive World Cup Finals tournaments (1950, 1954, 1958, 1962). Eventually replaced by Alf Ramsey, later to become Sir Alf Ramsey.

Sir Walter being the only England manager not to have managed a club at League level prior to appointment.

Looking forward to the day when Roy Hodgson becomes Sir Roy.

(Don't confuse the prospective Sir Roy with "Suroy" of PAFC who with his cronies almost put Argyle out of business.) :@

Whatever way you look at it,

"Roy Hodgson . . . England manager"

is better than

"Mike Bassett . . . England manager"

I wouldnt disagree too much apart from I would have

Hart

Walker/Richards
Cahill/Jones
Terry/lescott
Cole

Parker/carrick
Scholes/barry
Gerrard/J.Cole

Sturridge/Walcott
Rooney/wellbeck
Young/downing

I have named alternatives as I went along just to highlight the depth and variety in the squad.
I would certainly start cahill and terry together as they play together at club level so we should have a more solid defence. I have picked walker due to picking sturridge ahead of him so walker would need to overlap.

Into the midfield Sturridge has pace and a goal in him, walcott not done enough this season . Many of you will probably be suprised to see scholes but im hoping he will come out of retirement. He has a great eye for a pass and controls tempo. Joe Cole from bench done well in france and has ability to do unexpected.

Up top I reluctantly pick wellbeck as I would prefer a more physical presence. He clearly has pace and a decent touch. Would have picked zamora if he had been on form as I like his back to goal play.

Stick Roy in for the Euros and let him go back to his club in the new season if he cocks it.

Cheers

Confirmed on a 4 year deal.

Personally I think Roy Hodgson is going to get destroyed by the press / fans and the egotistic underachievers he has inherited.

Good luck pal - you are going to need it!
