not related to this thread, but forever - please, I beg of you - allow me to coach you on the use of punctuation. Your abuse of the poor innocent apostrophe (not every word that ends in "s" needs one) is bad enough, but yesterday I saw a sentence that had 11 commas.

Don't do it for you. Do it for my sanity :)

Two of our best players who could easily play at Championship level for £750,000 and most of you seem to be over the moon about it. Yes we are a small club and it appears we cannot lose the small club mentality. Why shouldn't we clamour for more? They ARE worth a LOT more than this. They are real QUALITY players, young and progressive and Torquay have found them and developed them ready for the next step in their careers. £750,000 is a hell of a lot of money for us but it's taking the piss.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

Is it taking the pi$$? Firstly, I agree with you with the worthiness of Bobby and Eunan. I too think that they are worth more than £750,000 together and if I had it my way in a perfect world, I would demand a £1,000,000 sum for the two players as I think they are each worth 500k. However, we've got to be realistic here. We are a small club in league 2 and if a bid came in for Bobby and Eunan for 750k we cannot afford to ignore it, even if they are two great players. Why? Because 750k is a lot of money in today's society, especially for a small club in football in league 2 and we can do a lot with £750,000.

Danny, thanks for your post but in terms of REAL TANGIBLE VALUE £750,000 is taking the piss. I'd take £750,000 of course i would as it would do wonders for my club but they are worth a lot more IMO.

Unfortunately its a buyers market, so we won't be calling the shots. Eunan will only go for £175k wherever he ends up, so if there was any truth in this rumour I'd be surprised if we pocketed £575k for Bobby. Very few L2 players (or L1 players for that matter) move for that sort of money these days purely because that sort of money isn't flying around anymore.

If both players were to leave this summer, £400k total would represent the best deal we could probably hope for.

750k for two players that may not make the step up - who knows how they would actually cope?

What's to say (heaven forbid) that one of them breaks their leg and is out for the season, or even worse, has a career ending injury - not worth anything to anybody then.

Players are really only worth what other clubs see fit to pay for them - if we were offered 750k for the two I would personally snap the offering managers arm off!!

Imagine how many rabbits Ling could pull out of the hat with that sort of money!!

Oh Andy, I know you are a bit of a johnny-come-lately, but don't be silly.750k is a king's ransom for TUFC. Two of our best players, I grant you, but let's get real. We aren't playing Championship Manager.

You're not alone, but you are missing the point completely.

Andy is saying that these players, given identical circumstances of their performances etc if going from Peterborough to Manchester United (the names of the clubs aren't important, ignore the fact that Man Utd are a richer club etc, just go with it) they would be selling for £5,000,000 each because that is their true market worth. We are getting shafted (in real terms) because we are 'only' Torquay United and we have to accept a paltry bid because we cannot afford not to.

For me, we must not slip into the Crewe mentality of producing or developing brilliant youngsters only to sell them to keep afloat. Dave (and others) know more about this than I do, but I suspect that we don't actually NEED to sell anyone to balance the books. Our financial planning is such that we know this year is likely to be a loss (massive new stand and all that), and the board have planned for that accordingly. For a club like TUFC, financial planning which includes significant transfer fees is madness, that's like basing your budget on getting to the QF of the FA cup, it's simply too risky. Any money we get for anyone will be bonus on top of whatever we have in the kitty already, it won't have been budgeted such that, say, £750,000 came in for these two, because it simply is not sufficiently likely to happen.

As to the idea that, if the figure is £750,000, we should rip their hands off; this number is meaningless with no context. Without these two (Bobby especially), it's unlikely that we are going up (it's pretty unlikely as it is). How much will that cost us, sitting in mid table all year, reduced attendances, no playoff sellouts, no FA Cup third round, no nothing? Once that amount has been taken away from the £750,000, then you get the true value to TUFC of selling the players. I suspect we would be looking at a net value of around £500,000. If we lose out on promotion because of selling them (no one can say for sure, but go with it) then there's that half a million pounds gone too, so we have had a dull season, and lost our two superstars, all for a net gain of sod all. No, I'm afraid that unless someone comes in with genuinely stupid money (£2,000,000 perhaps), the sort of money which will revolutionise the club entirely, then it's a no from me.

Oh, and F'rev, if you're making possessive the object of the sentence, then you need an apostrophe: John's apple.
If you are pluralising the object, you don't: John has many apples.
Very simple.

Matt.

Matt, we aren't getting shafted by anybody. If Eunan has a clause in his contract stating that he can speak to anyone offering us £175k then you'd have to blame whoever agreed to that ridiculous clause wouldn't you say? Of course there have been denials that the clause even exists but if anyone falls for that then more fool them.

Let's say Eunan moves to Swindon and we get Bodin and £50k, Eunan has a good season for Swindon and then moves on for £1m who is to blame? Swindon? Eunan? The one dealing with the negotiations at our end? I think the answer is obvious, don't you?

We (the fans) have been shafted by seeing the players we all want to watch being basically given away for nothing so that fans of other clubs can enjoy watching them instead. I don't care whose fault is it, this isn't injury lawyers 4u, it'd just be nice to know that if all the Jonny-cum-latelys at Cheaty are getting to watch Eunan next season, that they paid a fortune for the privilege. They are bloody famous for paying massive money for utter junk, why are we allowing Eunan to be the exception to the rule?

I agree with Matt. If clubs like Crawley can sell players for their true market value, rather than giving them away cheaply, then Torquay United can and should do the same.

And I agree with Dave. If what he says is true then Torquay United still have that small-time no-ambition mentality, and should look to getting back into the Conference as soon as possible since they would not deserve to be anywhere else. In which case I've no doubt that Martin Ling would have a few choice words to say and would move on himself.

But let's wait and see what happens. I believe the current board to be the most sensible and financially prudent for a long long time, and I'm sure ML is as ambitious a manager as any, not just for himself but for the club and the team. And the players themselves would benefit from another season with ML and the Gulls, particularly in another promotion challenge.

It seems to be only among the 'supporters' that we find so much doubt and negativity, when we should be more positive and confident than we have been for many years..

Ex-fricking-actly!! I was disappointed at missing out on the autos, and disappointed at losing in the play offs (although being on s lilo at a 5 star resort in Mexico when I found out softened the blow) and losing at old Trafford last year hurt, but I would say achievement to expectation wise over the last 5 year's, we must be in the top few on the country.

A brand new stand, higher placed finish in each of the last 5 seasons, players under contract that are covetted by higher league teams, a manager (who nobody gave a chance) and back room staff we are all delighted with- that to me is both showing ambition and a bloody great state of affairs, and everyone of us would have snapped whomever was offering this to us's hand off to be in in this shape 5, and even one year ago.

Whilst I would be pleased in a way if a big investor pumped money in a la Crawley etc. If you cant appreciate the place we're in right now, maybe you should look at following Man City, they're quite ambitious right now
