CONFIRMED: Mark Ellis to Crewe ....

Post by CP Gull »

.... for £70k.

http://www.thisisdevon.co.uk/story-1641 ... tory.html?

Shame to see him go, which I'm pretty sure he will. A decent enough move for him as it's League 1 and iis in the right sort of area for where he wants to be.

Personally, I think the fee is about right and at least we've got something for him rather that than him leave next year for nothing.

no way thats not enough, we should hold out for a tribunal fee, crewe are swilling with money after the powell deal, 70k is an insult to the time and money we've spent nurturing him

what is wrong with us, its about we stood up for ourselves and said no, yr not having this player for the first offer you put in, tell em we want £150k and work from there, bad deal yet again, if true, TUFC board, despite all their recent good work, have seriously let us down this week

We should be looking for double that. Risk the tribunal.

I usually think we overprice our players on this site, but I fully agree with the above, think Ellis is definitely worth 6 figures minimum. He's young, has been superb for most of the season (20 clean sheets - they weren't all just down to Bobby), and he's got a year left on his contract. Hold out guys!

£70k would be a laughably insulting figure for someone of Ellis's potential.

First Bobby, perhaps Eunan and now this. I know that we are a selling club but this is rubbing salt into the wounds.... :@

Couldn't agree more bixie, any amount less than 6 figures would be an absoloute disgrace! I honestly think a tribunal would value him more! Especially being an integral part of the defence that kept 20 clean sheets in our promotion race! :@

And the fact that we have consistently rejected bids of around the 100k mark from Rochdale in the last couple of years.

Don't worry about it we will probably get 40k if we are lucky for Ellis. Other clubs must piss themselves laughing when they deal with us.

At the end of the day though guys it's a market place and let's face it Mark Ellis has effectively made it known that he wants away by refusing to sign a contract that has been on offer to him for over 6 months. Any club wanting to buy him have had more than enough opportunity and yet, as far as I am aware, they (Crewe) are the only ones to have actually come in for him. In much the same way as it appears Crawley are the only ones who want to meet, or should I say are in a position to meet, the £175k release clause in Eunan's contract as things stand, that despite the fact that we pretty much all agree that he is a steal at that price.

The reality is that bar perhaps Sheffield United and Preston (even Portsmouth and Coventry are skint!) among the bigger clubs in League 1, that apart from a handful of clubs like Swindon, Bournemouth, Crewe, Crawley, Chesterfield, Rotherham and Fleetwood there really aren't too many clubs around in the bottom two leagues who can afford, or are showing any signs of, being in a position to pay large transfer fees.

Of that lot, even the "big spenders" like Preston North End, Swindon and Rotherham have not, as far as I am aware, paid out a single penny in transfer fees this summer, quite simply they are all signing Bosman free transfers and then paying over the odds in wages no doubt, rather than hand over a transfer fee.

The only major deals in the lower leagues this season (Portsmouth aside) have been Nick Powell's move to Man U from Crewe, Jamie Vardy from Fleetwood to Leicester, Lewis Grabban from Rotherham to Crewe and our very own Bobby O! If we do end up pocketing c £600k from the sales of Bobby, Mark and Eunan then we will certainly be up there with the biggest recipients of transfer fees in the lower leagues outside of Portsmouth and possibly Coventry and the aforementioned Crewe and Fleetwood.

If the fees we receive for Ellis, O'Kane and Olejnik enable Martin Ling to find replacements of sufficient calibre to help get us promoted, then everyone will be happy. And, once we move up a division, we should then be in a position to attract and keep better players and to command higher fees for the ones we sell..

Another way of looking at it, let's just be grateful that we aren't in the same position as newly promoted Shrewsbury. In the space of less than a couple of months they have lost almost half of their first team .... Captain Ian Sharps (to Rotherham), another of their centre halves Cansdell-Sherrif and midfield playmaker Nicky Wroe (both to Preston) and now their top scorer James Collins (to Swindon edit fee subject to a tribunal). In other words the spine of their team, all walked out, for absolutely £ 0 as things stand edit apart from whatever the tribunal values Collins at.

That' s the equivalent, I would suggest of us losing say Ellis, Saah, Lathrope and Howe for nothing! Ouch, now that would really hurt!

Don't want any player that does not want to be here and Ellis obviously wants away, as shite as it may be we should take what ever we can get now as knowing our luck a tribunal fee would just end up being a even bigger slap in the face.
