The Real Ale Thread

Post by AustrianAndyGull »

Perhaps would be a bit of fun and indeed informative for fellow connoiseurs of real ale to use this thread to pass on tips and recommendations. I've just picked up 4 bottles of TRIBUTE from my local store which previously i had been unable to get. Four bottles for £6, dink dank doo! I believe TRIBUTE is a Cornish ale from St Austell and i've never had it before. I wasn't going to buy them though as i have reason to believe they sponsored Plymouth Argyle did they not? I got them anyway, yum yum. I also brought back some DARTMOOR BREWERY - JAIL ALE from my recent trip to Devon and served ice cold it is absolutely beautiful stuff. You can almost taste the water that goes in. I've fallen out with DOOM BAR as it has become a bit bland. My current favourite is from a small brewery up here in the East Yorkshire Wolds near the coast near Filey and it's called WOLD TOP BREWERY. They do IPA, SCARBOROUGH FAIR and WOLD GOLD and they are really tasty and highly recommended.

Anyway, before i go i must refute any allegations that i am a member of CAMRA!! I'm not that old...........i'm 36!
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

This website does not condone drinking.
Maybe one day, Carayol will find London...

A good shout Andy, Tribute is a decent pint. I HIGHLY recommend anything from Thornbridge Brewery. Jaipur IPA is one of the best beers I've ever tasted.

You've got a few decent breweries near you Andy, I'd recommend Abbeydale (Absolution, Daily Bread and Black Mass), Kelham Island (Easy Rider, Pale Rider), Thornebridge (Jaipur IPA, Sequoia, Chiron, Raven), Newby Wyke (Bear Island, White Squall, Chesapeake)
Luke.

Cheers Luke, i know the Kelham Island ones as i used to walk dogs around the brewery ( and occasionally stop for a sneaky jar ) when i worked for the animal shelter in Sheffield. Where is Thornebridge based? Is it Bristol?

Derbyshire somewhere I think, maybe Lincolnshire.

EDIT: Just west of you in a town called Bakewell, according to their website.

I'll look out for that Luke, i go to Bakewell every week nearly with the little un to feed the ducks and stuff as it's only 20 minutes away but i've not seen nor heard of Thornbridge anywhere in the town. The last time i was in The Peacock i didn't notice it otherwise i'd have probably have ordered it. Must be a well kept secret or something! Weird that but i can nip in next time i'm in town and pick up some bottles now i know it's on the Buxton road. I'll let you know how it tastes! :)

The Folk club where I perform in Much Marcle is a real ale pub. It's called "The Slip" I don't drink cos I can't but I recognise the signs where they are. It is a highly recommended pub in that area. with local brew. Personaly I only brew tea.

I can also recommend the local Ditches as good a for a snooze when you have had a few too many. They look neat and deep. you can have a good snooze without being interfered with. Even Trojan would like em.

I've actually been drinking the wonderful Jaipur IPA tonight, still as good as ever. Careful though Andy, it's quite potent! 5.9% is pretty good, I'd say! As long as you like strong, light beers you'll be just fine.

Have to say, what a great idea for a thread.

'Pure Udu' is one of my favorites but doesn't appear on the shelves very often.

Keeping it local, I quite like the Bays brewery offerings of 'Devon Dumpling' and 'Bays breaker'. There are a couple of Teignworthy brewery bottle conditioned ales I like too although I can't remember their names.

Can't go wrong with a Tribute either!
Mmmmmm, beeeeeeeer.

Also, the ones made by Neil Morrissey and Richard Fox. They had a range of beers from Blonde, Brunette and an IPA too. The Blonde and Brunette are stunning (excuse the pun) and well worth a try. I think you can still find them in Tescos.

I prefer real, good quality cider. Unfortunately, it's becoming more difficult to find these days, even in the Cider Bar. The pale, fizzy factory-produced pseudo-cider usually sold in pubs should be avoided.

I have no problem with a conversation about Real Cider. Strongbow is off-limits! I highly recommend the Cornish Orchards ciders, they recently won an award for the best cider in Britain. Gwynt Y Ddraig cider is pretty good too, considering it's Welsh!
