Very fair report I would say, but your man was probably unsighted to the incident where he believes Downes deserved a red: you will not see a cleaner challenge in league two all season. He won 100% of the ball and touched 0% of the man. No yellow card, no furore, just pure adulation from the popside for a perfectly timed intervention. Although I guess you could say if the referee believes it to be a foul, (he didn't, the linesmen took it upon himself to create a foul out of nowhere) his only option is to give a red card. Either way it is SHOCKING refereeing.

Ben! Calm down mate, it's not like you to berate people, that's my job.

Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.
I think if you had witnessed the incident and resulting ineptitude from the officials you would be spending the night in the police station, hospital or funny farm, or all of the above.
I would go so far to say that due to the proximity of the linesman to said incident it goes down as one of the worst I have ever seen. Some people.

The single best tackle in L2 all season without question or shadow of doubt and the lino gives a foul. Not a red, not a yellow, not a foul, officiating of the very lowest standard.

What an excellently balanced report. Indeed, I would say he slightly underplayed his side's contribution to the match.
However, it is interesting to get the other view - I think all supporters sometimes find it difficult to get a true perspective on a game.

the downes tackle happened right in front of me and a great and fair tackle it was taking the ball fairly and cleanly, the linesman needs to look at himself it was one of the worst decisions ive seen.
Agreed but is weird how none of the Gillingham players, staff or fans saw it though! Would have been a real shocker if he had seen red for it like they all suggest he should have.ROADRUNNER wrote:the downes tackle happened right in front of me and a great and fair tackle it was taking the ball fairly and cleanly, the linesman needs to look at himself it was one of the worst decisions ive seen.

To be fair - myself and everyone around me said it last night - if that was a foul he had to go.
Very decent match report, and like the others said, it was never a freekick, let alone a card.
Personally blame the referee, the linesman was looking from a side on view and could not have seen which way the ball ran after the tackle, the referee had a straight on perfect view and would have seen excatly what I saw, the ball run off at the same angle of Aaron's tackle which to me indicates only one thing, Downes played the ball clean as a whistle, if he had caught the player the ball would have run straight on.
The referee does have the power to over rule the linesman, and linesman clearly made a mistake the refree knew that, because one; He was not going to give the free kick and two; He only booked Downes which tells me he didn't fully trust the linesman.
Nick you have refereed many junior games as Ryan has, with parents running the line, if you suspect a mistake has been you would over rule and correct me if I am wrong surely the referee could have re-started the match with a drop ball if he had over ruled the linesman as he should have done.

Ahuh. I personally wouldn't have given it anyway, even if it was flagged up (if it happened in a junior game). However I'm sure the ref could have stopped, spoken to the lino and then restarted with a drop ball anyway. As it was he got himself in a right pickle!
