austrianandygull wrote:For me AJ , Stevens SHOULD get automatic abuse. What has he contributed to the team in 4/5 years? He either starts the game then comes off for being ineffective or comes on as sub and is equally ineffective. He does not score, cross or have an end product. The kid has had millions of opportunities to show us something, anything and he hasn't. If i were afforded the opportunities that Stevens has had then there is no way on earth i would be still at Torquay. I would have proved myself and gone on to play at a higher level. If that didn't happen i would do the decent thing and drop down to non-league and get a job. The fact that some fans are still slagging Stevens off after 5 years is because they have seen him produce nothing every game that his wage and contract justifies and he is a joke. HE DOESN'T DO ANYTHING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ARGH!!!
Usually, I'm a frequent reader of this forum, but some people really do send me over the edge. Agreed, he hasn't set the world alight, but I would say he has 'showed something'. Yeovil at home? Burton away? Stevenage at home? Exeter at home? He's scored some important goals, and set up plenty over the years. He's not consistent, yes, I'm sure he's working on that. Notice his 1st and 2nd seasons, when he had the fans on his side, he was a quality player, and one of our best in the Blue Square. He was in a rut at the start of our football league return season, and I'd say he's never really got out of it, because our fans just generally abuse him. If we got behind him, he could put in some decent performances. His wage? His contract? Do you know his actual contract details? Or are you guessing from Football Manager, or something?

Stevens SHOULD get automatic abuse. For all our sakes, I hope that's tongue in cheek.

As for Robertson, another player that has a poor relationship with our fans, Him & Stevens, 2 players that have been here from the Conference years, and get blazed for some reason. He didn't deserve the abuse, but I'm sure it will get sorted. Nothing that our fans should argue over, either. As someone said, having an opinion is fine, just keep things like Criticism for until you leave the ground.

Well said YellowMurphy. It beggars belief that some supporters seem to believe they are helping the team by hurling abuse at players. Everybody has players they rate and players they don't, but when those players are in a Torquay United shirt the only way to be of any help to the team as a supporter is to support and encourage all of those players whether you rate them as individuals or not.

Why do i need to know his contract details? He has one and shouldn't have one so therefore he is obtaining money from doing **** all is he not? He is in a rut because he simply doesn't have the ability to get himself out of it and as for the four games you highlighted there. I'd say he was value for money for playing well in 4 games out of hundreds wouldn't you? Jesus. The only two players i have ever abused are Stevens and Jamal Easter as in my opinion they shouldn't be anywhere near a football pitch. I don't make a habit of it but there you go.

I singled out those 4 games as ones he has particularly excelled in, he's done well in plenty more, talk about 2 whole seasons. (Blue Square yes, but he's shown shades of what he can do in league 2, particularly in the first season) You should know his contract details, because you seem to be making the assumption he is not worth his wages. If he's trying as hard as he can, I've got no problem with him, can't fault effort. Is he doing f**k all? He hasn't really played this season, he's been injured. If you're on here abusing the players, you're in the wrong place. This is TorquayFANS.com, he does have the ability, he has shown this in plenty of games, during his time with us, he's had plenty of assists, and scored the odd goal, can't ask for much more from a midfielder.

While I would never abuse any of our players during a game and have frequently challenged those that do, I will always reserve the right for myself and others to level criticism at players on a forum. I agree with a lot that Yellowmurphy has to say but we'll have to agree to disagree on the point of criticising players on here. It is TorquayFans.com, not TorquayPlayersAppreciationSociety.com.

No, i'm on here abusing the PLAYER (singular). As i have said before i don't make a habit of slagging off players and Stevens is the only man in our squad who induces me to do this. Rice, Saah and McPhee for example are players i don't particularly think are good enough for league football but they have good games thern bad games then good games then bad so i won't slag them off. It is just the way it is. They are inconsistent and not very good all round which is why they are at Torquay. Stevens is just consistent at offering us nothing and after 5 years it takes the piss a bit. So he has scored the odd goal in 5 years as an attacking midfielder. Just underlines my point i believe. And yes this is Torquay FANS website of which i am one but that doesn't mean i have to agree with everything you say and that everything you say is right. Who dictates that you are not allowed to have a go at your own players? In my opinion it is ok so long as it is justifiable and not just mindless abuse. Just cos you don't like it doesn't mean you are right and i'm wrong.

Disagree with me all you like, just don't slag our players off, big injustice to say a player should get automatic abuse.

What has Robbo actually done wrong? A rare mistake here and then, when in-fact he has been a regular performer since Keith Curle first signed him. I'm sure a certain PB up the road would be interested in him

Nothing at all in my book. I think he's one of the best defenders at the club.

I remember one player in particular who was singled out for horrendous abuse.

Cliff Myers.

Did he ever react ? Nope.

Did it affect his game ? Nope.

Unlike Robertson, Cliff Myers stayed focused and professional. Then there's Wayno. Eventually he won over the boo boys.

With respect Troj, Myers and Robertson are two different people, not every one will react the same way to critcism or abuse.

And as a general point , i dont see why Robbo has to win over any boo boys, his effort and desire is faultless, and overall he is not a bad defender at this level.

I did this thread not just to talk and the Robertson incident, but to look at what stage constructive critcism becomes personal abuse, also when the right time to level critcism is, and whether us the fan really do have the right , to say what we want, when we want to a player.

Firstly construtive critcism, nothing wrong with that at all, whether it is a discussion between fans in the ground or pub, or on a fans forum after all this is what forums are about surely.

Reading back through this thread i now have an idea at what has been shouted at him not just Saturday but away to Shrewsbury aswell, there is a line and the line has been crossed from critcism, he in my view has been a victim of personal abuse from some TUFC fans, thats is not acceptable no matter what, and his reaction whilst un-professional, you have to remember Chirs Robertson is a human being like us all, so understandable.

It has been mentioned Robbo got sloppy for little while, there is the proof of the pudding if were ever needed, how does abusing a player help one the player or two the team, we could very well of let a goal during that time, i supose the people behind this abuse would have said...there you go told you Robbo was sh#t, whilst being to moronic to realise they were the cause of the mistake that could have led to the goal going in against us.

AustrianAndygull, i am not have a pop at you, i dont know you, and you may well be a throughly decent lad, however the mentality you have displayed is what i am focusing here, how does any player no matter what deserve automatic abuse? Come on, it is not Danny fault that the club chose to employ him as a footballer, or the manager see's fit to use him as a player, i have never seen Danny go out and play a lazy game, or make a mistake because he simply does not care, he has been put in the team short on confidence, and i am not to sure he has enough about him to cut it in league, niether his fault, i would hate for him to turn around like one these premier league panzy's a say sorry boss i am not in the right frame of mind to play.

I think as a fans group we are guilty of not forgiving a player, either for a bad game against a rival, or a sucsession of bad games, all players go through, and player deserve a second chance.

My only hope is we will go out now and leave our players alone, and start focusing on just supporting the team, they need to get back to winning ways soon, and for that, they will need our help.
