I wasn't even involved in this thread and I'm insulted!
You are right though, Torquay is a sh*thole. Paignton is getting better though, gradually.

If you want a festering sh*t hole of a seaside town, I'm very much afraid that Torquay takes the biscuit.
Matt.
The town of my birth is not a sh*thole, sh*tholes who have moved here have made it a sh*thole.
The prime sh*thole is the EU directed USAT (Unitary Status Authority Torbay). Since it's squatted itself on the English Riviera landscape it 's done nothing but crap upon Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.
It's easy to spot the ones who have recently moved here - they call it Torbay. A few born and bred locals call it Torbay too. The slow relentless drip drip drip of EU brainwashing, eh ? As you're a newcomer here Matt and a youngster, you don't have the years and experience that I have on the manor with the memories of what Torquay was like before the arrival of the EU Soviet. Torquay really was the Queen of the English Riviera. The sh*tholes have dragged the elegant uptown girl down to their level, to the point where she's a stripped of her assets p*ss poor broke raggeddy ass baglady aimlessly wandering the streets.
When the noble KK KIng returns with the gentleman Knights and sees what the sh*ts have done to the first Lady, the sh*t truly will hit the fan. The tracked and noted can expect to face the consequences.
In the meantime, avoid places known for their dubious reputation. Visit places where the sh*ts haven't completely crapped on them (St.Marychurch, Babbacombe and its Downs, Walls Hill, Marine Drive, Ilsham Valley and Cockington Village.
Oh, and still pop in on the Popside.

Sory Matt.
Have to agree with Trojan Here. (Oh hell now I am agreeing with Trojan. It will be Brucie next)
Torquay has been dragged down and down for a long time. I also remember what it used to look like. It indeed was the jewel of all seaside resorts. But remember Trojan. Some commercialism made it what it was in the first place. But it was done sensitively and properly. Not like the greed and avarice you see before you nowadays.
But let's put this in perspective. Torquay is nowhere near as bad as some I could tell you about.
Top of my List will be Margate. A true dump. You can see what it used to look like, but all the seas front shops and establishments have long closed and look derelict.
The place has been populated by imported labour from Eastern Europe and they have no alegience to the area. Unemployement has rocketed. They also add to the general air of depression.
2 Blackpool. Nuff said. It's a trash establishement. visit at your peril. or through diminished responsibility
3 That hole around Porthcawl. Tesco bay. (Yeah I know it's really Tresco!). The place is awful. The sea stinks and looks like a cocktail of chemicals. Wade in and watch your legs disolve.
4. Barry. it used to be the bees knees. now it's a rat hole.
5. Weston Super Mud. What can you say about this trap. Blackpool people think it's great and Weston Inmates think Blackpool is great. Their both crap.
6. East Fife and Methil. It's coastal all right. with a beach. that's all you can say about it. But you only pay a visit there through diminished responsibilty. Unless you follow their football team or a visiting team. Oh hang on that amounts to the same thing. God help the Rangers fans. Oh silly me that also amounts to the same.

Hang on Glos, I hate to bring logic to this rant, but you've said Torquay isn't a shithole, then said that it used to be beautiful, but has been dragged down and down for years. Surely a beautiful thing dragged relentlessly down and down automatically becomes a shithole.
I know a lot of you are from here and that I am not and I have seen the footage from Torquay's heyday with millions of people from 'that London' visiting for their week in the sun, but today, Torquay (millionaires row aside) is an absolute dive populated by the most awful old people, a vastly disproportional number of absolute scum and children in Godforsaken chav wagons featuring exhausts and bodykits that their horsepower simply cannot justify.
The "town" is nothing but a refuge for down and outs and bloody Wonga.com outlets. Not a John Lewis in sight. It's coming to something when those waiting outside the Magistrate's Court are some of the better people one will encounter on a brisk walk through the centre.
Matt.

Sorry to say it but Torquay is a shithole and it's not just the people that have moved here. The seafront of by Shedden hill looks like crap. The town looks like crap, The bay looks like crap. The whole town needs a rebuild and deep clean.

Torquay's definitely gone downhill over the years. I'm very nostalgic for the old Torquay..
