Yes we were all amazed that planning permission was granted for that stand extension with such a big advert. Doubt if it will ever come off though. We also have a big advertisment board built onto the away fans car park. There were objections locally but I think the club used their powers to swing a decision at the planners meeting at the council!
sadlad wrote:Trojan I stayed in a hotel opposite Plainmoor in 1997 and 1999 called The Sunray which is on the corner of Aveland Road. When I went to book up there again a couple of years later it had sadly been converted to residential appartments and is still there now and its just called Sunray. Seemed weird when the coaches pulled up outside there on Saturday knowing that over ten years ago I stayed there. It was handy to use as a base, Used to walk down that alley way at the back of the Grandstand and down St Pauls Crescent to catch the No 31 and 34 bus into Torquay and it passed down by Ellacombe Church Road so I guess that's where you live? I used to drink in that Union pub some nights and that one opposite the supermarket. Was it called O'Connell's or summat? There was also a pub almost opposite The Union called the White Hart? Seem to remember it was a bit seedy and had a bit of a reputation and I noticed a few years ago it had been demolished and small flats in its place now.
Spot on sadlad, I do live in that area on the bus route but won't say precisely where for security reasons. Can you change your poster name on here to Glad Saddler as I feel this would be more appropriate. Email Louis and he will sort it. O'Connors is the name you remember and White Hart got demolished several years ago after giving in to smackhead customers. Union Inn runs a tight ship and us regulars make sure it stays that way.

Fletch : I am absolutely stunned that USAT(Unitary Status Authority Torbay) has not stood in the way of the application, and this before the arrival of the enema it deserves.

Im sure the richly deserved enema will be administered by the people in May next year (is it May?)

Trouble is, it wont take long for the c**p to build up in town hall again, whichever flavour politico takes over :(

Fingers crossed, the Grandstand development comes to fruition. I feel an opportunity was lost when Westlands School was rebuilt but MB s enthusiasm had waned by then. I m not sure whether I would want to see the football club have ownership of the freehold of Plainmoor especially after seeing what has happened at Argyle and not forgetting that conman/crook Chris Noberts.

The alignment of Plainmoor the stadium doesn t exactly fit in well with Marnham Road but maybe something could be done to raise the capacity on that side in the future. There is definitely room at the Babbacombe End to increase capacity both by going back slightly and going up. How this would sit with the householders behind is another matter especially loss of direct sunlight/creation of shadow.

The other area of potential is the land behind the Ellacombe End. When the school got developed the playpark disappeared and given over to car parking. No problem from the Council then on that score. When the Family Stand was built the club was under strict instructions to stay within the existing perimeter boundary. One law for one then, another law for the other.

Any development of the land behind the Family Stand must be for the whole community. The football club involves the community, the school involves the community so no problem there then. No, I do not wish to see the swimming pool disappear. Yes, I would love to see a bigger one replace the smaller one together will other community based facilities. Of course there would be less green space for the children of the area to use. There is another green space/playpark off Haytor Road. Is it still there ? I must walk there again sometime and check that it is.

Any development would have to be with the consent of the immediate surrounding residents and of the wider community. Maybe we could organise ourselves into an action group called the PPF (Plainmoor Popular Front).Whether I would be accepted as an Ellacombe outsider is another matter. The other most important factor would be the funding and where it would come from.

This is my vision/outlook and I feel a more worthy one than that of the drama queen in the Town Hall calling erself Mayor.

I like your thinking, some great ideas there, unfortunately, I'm not so sure the council is that bothered about seeing TUFC expand for the better.

Trojan-you made me laugh with the suggestion of my user name change! LOL. Nah I'll keep to the one I've got but thanks for the compliment! Its the same one I use wherever I lay my hat. Some think its Because I'm a SADdlers fan and a LAD, right on both of course but where it stems from is about 15 years ago at away games in stead of the usual boring 'Come on you Saddlers' we had this spell where for a laugh we started chanting 'Come on you Sadlads' so I kind of revived the name. Mind you some think I'm a sad b'stad for the amount of posts I do! When we vacated WalsallMAD in Feb I ended up being the leading poster on there (about 16,200) Some of you may recall TorquayMAD had a messageboard once- yet not one single Gulls fan wrote on there. You were all obviously on here instead!

Ta for the confirmation of those pub names.

Yes Haytor park is still there Trojan. I know plainmoor is dodgy at times but Haytor park in my veiw is even more so. It has hardly no houses looking directly at it and one enterance into the park is like walking through a big bush. Saying that I hardly had any problems as a kid playing there.

Southampton Gull : Spot on Dave about USAT(Unitary Status Authority Torbay) doing little for English Riviera sport. USAT only does what suits itself, its bought off overpaid management (??) and the agenda of its EU Masters. See the thread called “ Have Your Whinging Moan Here “ for regular updates. Hope to see something there soon from yourself on Colin Lee. :)

sadlad : Yeah, I guessed that s what the abbreviation meant and thanks for the story of how it started and no, you re definitely no sad b stard. Years ago I remember someone saying that Walsall is a huge collection of council houses for the West Midlands. Is that true ? Never made it to Fellows Park or been to the Bescot but am glad you can see the new from the motorway as you could the old. Only been to two Midlands grounds : Hawthorns twice and Molineux once (should have been twice but the Triumph Dollopofshite Sprint brokedown near Bromsgrove. One of my brothers lives in Rubery near the Longbridge Roundabout.

united09 : Glad to hear it s still there and sad to hear it can be dodgy at times. Alcoholics ? Hoodies smoking weeeeeeeed ? Smackheads is it ? Sounds like it needs a patrol. I ll put a visit in and walk the inside perimeter. Torquay Urban District Council maintained the park superbly when I went Westhill School and spent many a happy lunch hour there with my fish and chips from Cyril s. To get clear access into the park from the footpath off the lane, the residents must bend the ear of the local councillor. Better still, go around to their house and put the face in theirs and demand action.

Not only am I off topic, I ve had a whinging moan on the wrong thread.

Back on topic : Do you think the Grandstand development will happen next year if adequate funding is not forthcoming ?

Brought this thread back up for discussion from page 4 of the archive as we should be hearing something soon concerning developments.

Then again with cutbacks we may hear nothing.

Cuptie/run is now crucial ? It already was/is without the proposed rebuild.

Thoughts anyone ?

I certainly hope the new main stand will get built, it will make Plainmoor seem a lot more modern as we only have one good looking modern stand, the Family Stand. I would have thought that the new stand would look something like Macclesfield's newish stand which I think looks very good (pictured below). I presume it will have a sponsored name and won't just be called the Main stand / Grandstand. I still wish we could have something like Shrewsbury, Chesterfield or Burton though.

I would hope it gets the name "The Paul Bristow Stand", any other would be totally crass after the commitment he gave our club.

There probably wont be any executive boxes at the back but any forthcoming rebuild will be an improvement on what's currently in situ.

Agree with Dave on the Stand name although Tony Boyce is also deserving to be in the running.

I hope Mr Bristow, Mr Boyce and God and doing everything they can from the other side of the ether to make our hopes a reality.

Maybe the trinity are already helping us : we are at home in the 4th Round with good prospects of progression.

They are not on their knees praying, they are up on there feet actively doing something about it and we the supporters must play our part to make so called miracles happen.

The "Living Coasts Grandstand" has a certain ring to it, instead of having TUFC on the seats you could have big pictures of various marine life like a big gull or a puffin  . It'd be our version of those faces Preston have at Deepdale.
