The number of stewards for each game is calculated on the intelligence from the Police and the visiting team ( hence the reason the Away Terrace is closed for some games) plus what we believe will be the home support based on current attendance figures, day of the week etc. The footballing authorities have laid down the minimum number of stewards that must be in attendance before the gates can be opened plus a formula to determine the additional stewards required based on anticipated numbers. This is commonly known as the " Green Guide" and compliance is monitored by the local authority, Police and Safety Officer who are in attendance at all games. Failure to comply would be in contravention of the General Safety Certificate issued by Torbay Council without which we cannot open the gates. We can discuss whether or not the numbers are set too high but at the end of the day we have to comply with the regulations. We always operate on the minimum number required.
I should also point out that stewards don't just walk in off the streets. There is a long period of training to gain an NVQ 2 through classroom learning and at least 12 months on the job training. The requirement for qualified stewards is also in the Green Guide. Given this level of investment it would be expensive and impractical to simply discard stewards once they had been asked to work.
I hope this provides an explanation if not the answer some will be looking for.

Many thanks for taking the time a trouble to reply, my posts were genuine, I know the stewards tend to be there 1 hour before gates open and de-brief after the gates have closed, so I should imagine there on duty for around 4 hours on match day, just seemed to be far to many stood around surplus to requirements Tuesday night, especially in the away end. I guess it's one for the steward company to answer, as to whether they can send any home if there has be an over estimation on crowd numbers.
Hadn't meant to suggest steward just walk in of the street, know some personally who do our match's, and some who also do music festivals, concerts and other events, training is lengthy but straight forward, and there never seems to be a short fall of those who hold up to NVQ 2.

Mr Candy has simply told you what he has been told to tell you and what any 'sane' director would tell you!
Do you really think he would come onto a fan's forum and state that the club was in financial trouble?? Get real!

Lads, lets not turn this into an argument and end up with the thread locked, admin in my view were right to leave this thread up and open. The fact I managed to speak to Andy Candy about steward numbers proves they were right to leave it open.
As for the financial state of the club is neither here nor there, if the club is in a healthy financial state 5 years from now, it will still be running, if it's not, it won't be, simples.

No offence meant .. it's just that you are on the 'official' website under the Directors section >

If you were a director .. you would certainly NOT be sane!

Sorry bay but you have andy candys answer and I think that should be enough on the subject, the last thing we need now is arguments about the finances, my wife has dealings with the club and they pay there bills on the dot each month and we arent talking loose change here. So please lets get on with the football and stop stirring the shit.

One look at the league suggests that Exeter are NOT safe from relegation, by no means.

Some random pisstaker comes on here and make an outrageous, unsubstantiated claim. A man who has forgotten more about the club in the last 5 minutes than most of us will ever know has arrived to give a well reason reply... And some of you prefer the story of the nutter?
Baffling.
