Re: Torquay United vs Bristol Rovers Game (10/3/12 15:00)

Never have I come away from a match having drawn, feeling like we had won, such was the euphoria at the end of 90 minutes.
How many times have we said that when the going gets tough we need people to step up to the plate, and how many times is that person Lee Mansell?! Once again a never say die attitude from him was the difference between one point and zero points.
The first half was one of frustration - we wasted two clear cut chances. One from "walk away Rene" who, when one on one with ex Gull Bevan, fluffed his chance by wanting too many chances before shooting. The second "opportunity" was lost when Howe was blatantly fouled in the box, with the referee getting a fantastic view of the incident. Unfortunatly for us he bottled the decision that would have been made in front of a packed away end.
It appeared that that first half was going to finish 0-0 when, against the run of play, Harrold (the one player SG was worried about) scored with a deflected shot past the flailing arms of an otherwise resolute Bobby.
The second half was, again, one of frustration as Torquay, for all their huffing and puffing, failed to get the killer ball up to the hardworking Rene.
Oastler was getting continually beaten by the impressive looking Muzzy who clearly had a point to prove to the Home side faithful. He was definitely The Gas Heads most creative outlet - he failed to endear himself to the home fans when he hacked Nico down in front of the Popside and effectively ended his game.
Bristol Rovers second goal came from a fast counter attacking move. The ball was picked up in their own goal area and, in the space of about 20 seconds, was being picked up by a furious Bobby in the opposing goal. Furious due to the lack of closing down by the defence which allowed Zebroski to waltz right through and score.
It seemed that we were destined to lose this game - however destiny had other ideas.
Bristol Rovers took off Muzzy and within a minute Lee Mansell stepped up to score the first of his two goals. The family stand and popside went into raptures. Could it be that we could get a draw from the jaws of defeat? The answer was yes, but not before a lull in play where it seemed that we were going to lose.
However Torquay pressed forward for what seemed to be the one hundredth time of the half since scoring. From my position at the away end of the Pop, it was difficult to see exactly what was going on - the ball seemed to be pumped into the box continually. Suddenly the net bulged, somebody had managed to get the second goal. Cue scenes of delirium from the Torquay supporters, and the players.
After that we almost scored a winner, such was our desire to press forwards - Bristol Rovers players, back room staff and fans just desperate to hear the final whistle - this came soon after and put the Gas heads out of their misery.
It really did feel like we had won the match and, I'm sure, the Rovers fans felt that they had lost.
With other results going our way too how important will this one point be at the end of the season - and how important was that result for the team. Proof that never giving up DOES get results.
So - I break my losing steak (the last two games I have seen have been defeats), and I head back to Guernsey on Monday satisfied that we have a very good chance of getting automatic promotion
