Fonda - Im also sad to see Benners go and also think people on here possibly dont realise just what a natural goalscorer he is. Having said that, the addition of Accy in the midfield (in place of NW) will make us a stronger team as it will allow more attacking play from the wingers and/or EoK. Add to that the addition of Jake Robinson who also knows where the onion bag is, and has a little bit more pace than Benners, does actually make us look a bit stronger overall.

i think robinson will give us something different up front, he's not benyon, similar to a degree, but i think he'll fit in well, and with good service, will definitely score goals. And Stanley is a good addition in the middle of the park. both areas we needed a bit extra on saturday. lets see how it goes, and maybe they'll turn into permanent deals later on/in the summer. also a bit disappointed to see Hemmings go back early to be honest, in patches i thought he looked very useful. pace and power is a good combination when used properly.
i'll be forever grateful to benyon for his part in keeping us up last year, and the effort he's put in each week. i just wish we'd had the luxury of having him on contract beyond the summer so we could've kept him til the end of the season, but lets get behind the lads, and the new additions, and get back up the league.

I think that's harsh - he worked tirelessly up-front on his own most of the time - closing down 4 defenders all game is probably a pretty tiring business. I think he was entitled to a breather occasionally.NickGull wrote: Don't get me wrong, it was good to have someone who could hit the net from those sort of chances. I didn't really mean it as a sort of criticism, it's just that personally I never really felt confident if Benners was through one-on-one with the keeper where he's about 12 yards out. Maybe that was just me. Robinson scored one of them against us at their place, and I'm fairly confident that if he gets a couple of goals in these first two games, he'll have a good half a season with us. Hopefully, anyway.
My main criticism(s) of Benners would be that he sometimes takes a while getting back into play after chasing a ball down. He strolls back, so is ineffective and useless as he's in an offside position. More recently, he must have been trying to improve that side of the game, aswell as the physical side, as he wasn't being pushed to the floor as much as he used too. However, with his stature, he's always going to lack any aerial presence.

Fair enough Shane, just the way it read. Probably spending too much time PMing Dave, had a funny effect on me

Don't get me wrong, I'm gutted Benyon has gone and I don't subscribe to the view that were stronger (yet, anyway)
But, today could have been alot worse and I'm pretty happy we've only lost Benyon and Wroe in this window, as I feared we'd also lose O'Kane and Ellis as well.
I was already resigned to losing Benyon. Also Wroe, while has been of great service, needs to move on as I don't think we'd ever see him at 100% here again.
We've also made two signings that seem decent and respected at this level, which is an unexpected surprise - I expected unproven championship youngsters or non-league no marks.
Robinson in particular seems to have shown some good glimmers of potential at Shrewsbury and we seem to be good at getting the potential out of players. You never know, he may be absolutely brilliant for us and I don't think we could have realistically have done better.

Maybe you're right mate. Perhaps his head and been turned. But i never got that impression - he never looked like a player that had his heart or head elsewhere. I still think we'd have got a similar deal in the summer - even with a tribunal, and we'd have had the benefit of his goals in the meantime.royalgull wrote:Absolutely no chance we could keep Benyon mate once the bids had come in from above.
Out of contract in 6 months, he's out grown us. It's time to move on.
Oh well, beginning to repeat myself now, so time to forget it and turn in i guess.

Not so much having his head turned than it's a good opportunity for him. he's not joining a mickey mouse outfit like Dagenham. Swindon is close to where he's been the last 6 years (bristol and torquay) they are a good club, yes they are having a poor season but he'll go in there, be in the team hopefully score some goals and they can look forwards for next season.
Elliot gave us everythng while he was here, with or without specualtion. Some players get all bertie big b*llocks but Elliot's commitment never wavered.
He's made enormous progress in a short space of time, but like i say he's out grown us now. It was the right time for him to go elsewhere and continue his development at a higher level and it was the right time for us to cash in on him. It meant we got the most money we possibly could for him. There is no chance he'd have signed a new contract.
Obviously we're still waiting for the official word on these new boys, i've heard 4 attackers named that supposedly we've taken i presume on loans. It's not ideal that it's not permanent, but Loans are a good try before you buy policy in lots of ways.
Lets hope we get some official word soon so we can all rest easier tonight.

How do we know there are 2 more targets? Perhaps another defender would be good (RB?) and preferably a winger.
EDIT: Scrap the defender, I'd rather have another striker.
