AustrianAndyGull wrote:Maybe i was a little hasty about Newport coming up. Sure the place is a total poohole but it's a new ground for me and on the map it's not too far from Gloucester so i'll go. I actually thought it was Port Talbot / Swansea way so was pleasantly surprised when i looked at the map to see where it was. I've got Mansfield up so i can't really have any complaints. :~D

Just a massive shout out for Alfreton Town. Currently in the conference play off spots 8 points off Cambridge. Alfreton is only 8 miles or so from me and somewhere I go fairly often and it is literally a village. Think somewhere size wise between Bovey Tracy and Newton Abbott and you're about there. A remarkable achievement for a club of this size and with crowds sub 1000. I was going to go and watch them on Saturday v Dartford as I wanted to see some footy and to also watch ex Gull Lathaniel Rowe-Turner in action but I couldn't be arsed. Anyway, if they get into the football league on their budget it will be one of the finest achievements of lower league football history. Remember, this outfit is no Fleetwood Rushden or Crawley bankrolled to the hilt. Alfreton have nothing.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

I thought Alfreton were bank-rolled to some extent - I want to say Wayne Bradley is the man behind it all?

Nothing like on the same scale as Fleetwood, and now they have reached the Conference proper they might be self-sufficient but like most clubs they have had some help on the way.

It is nice to see them doing well though - I hope one of them, Salisbury, Braintree or Nuneaton can make it into the playoffs (and maybe more) as I'd like to see a "new" league club.

Looks like Alfreton are blowing it. I hope either Cambridge or Braintree (if they get in the play offs) go up from the conference and I'm hoping Dartford and Aldershot drop. Then I hope North Ferriby United win the conf north and they are top at the moment on gd.

Why is referred to as the 'conference' anyway? Where does that word come from?

Wrong thread perhaps but today on the way back from a thouroughly enjoyable but all too regular weekend in Scarborough I passed the old gates of the McCain Stadium and stopped to reminisce. Very sad, the pitch is overgrown and all that is left is the old gates and some turnstile doors , the gates with SCARBOROUGH FOOTBALL CLUB imprinted on them. I really hope the new Scarborough Athletic can somehow climb the non league pyramid and get into the conference at least. Such great memories and such a tragedy. For it still to be there years on in permanent decay upset me a bit to be honest. I always spare a thought for decent clubs like this and Darlo and Stockport et al who have suffered. God I hope Chesterfield go bust though.

Darlo did it to themselves. In not sure what the deal was with Stockport, but they were dreadful (as in genuinely dreadful, not merely the lowest ranked team, there is a difference).

Hoping for a miracle at Dartford, need some wins to stay up.

Matt.

Dartford have a chance today at home to already relegated Tamworth whilst the team to catch Chester face a difficult trip to Cambridge. They could be in with a real shout of survival on the last day if they can win today. I'm obviously hoping that Chester stay up though because of geography.
