Worked hard, battled for the ball, benefited from a poor yeovil pass back, showed awesome composure to sit the GK on his arse and tap it in!Kernowgull wrote:How did Sullivan do? I see he scored. If we bring in 2 strikers then surely he'll be loaned out?
I would be happy with Rendall as a sub, but if he's going to be first choice be a bit disappointed.

Find it strange that the two comments about Cooper so far are largely positive. When Yeovil had their proper forwards on Cooper was the root of practically all their chances with poor positioning and zero anticipation. Downes had to bail him out multiple times.
He did indeed become more comfortable in the second half, but he was up against Some very young strikers.
Personally, I would be very worried if he's our starting centre back. If we want promotion, we need better. What happened to the Trottman rumour?

Right, let's nip this in the bud before it starts to grow too large. Rendell was not brilliant tonight, but then, it's his first football of the year, it's in a team he has been with for less than 24 hours, hasn't trained with and against Championship opposition. All this guff about him not being of Howe's quality, I suppose this is the 'quality' which has seen Howe move from us all the way to the giddy heights of Burton frigging Albion to play alongside such luminaries as Billy Kee in such revered competitions as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy?
As for Cooper, he did manage to look good, although I was deeply unimpressed with Yeovil's forward play. They were lovely until the final third, when poor decision making cost them a number of opportunities (and a dozen more for offsides).
Chappel and Cameron are a couple of really good players. Bodin had a good game and gave his man a torrid time on occasion. I am more convinced now than ever that it is pressure which gets to Billy. In these meaningless matches, he shines. As soon as the pressure is on and the crowd start to get jittery, he goes to pieces. Much to Andy's chagrin, Billy looked like his old (loanee) self once again tonight. As per the Marines, it was the team on the pitch at the final whistle which looked best of all. The combination of Craig and Thompson drove their back line wild. They simply couldn't cope with Nathan's accuracy combined with Tommo's speed. He skinned his man on one occasion to the extent where I felt embarrassed for the Yeovil man. Tommo played well, good, accurate crossing and excellent use of his pace (Macklin take note).
Dan Sullivan's composure to finish as he did was truly remarkable. Marek Stech is a very good keeper, and he was made to look a right mug. Albeit, it came from a horrible defensive error (as did the first), but the way he skinned the bloke, twice, was absolutely joyful.
All in, Yeovil didn't look like they will score too many goals. We look like a proper Knill side. We don't seem to have any dead wood anymore, every player looks first-team ready. Downes will be POTS if he carries on like that. Ricey is a perfectly capable understudy. All in, a good evening's work.

I must find out where FerrariLover sits ( or stands ) because he saw a different Bodin to me? Admitted, the sun was in my eyes for a while, but I'm afraid I saw a passenger very reminiscent of last season; a player who wants the ball, starts off well, occasionally wins it well, but constantly loses it again. Again very much liked the action when Yeoman, Thompson & Sullivan are on the field. Wasn't so impressed with Harding tonight, quite liked Cooper. Looking forward to August 3rd ! ![Scarf :scarf:](./images/smilies/scarf.gif)

Three incidents spring immediately to mind with Billy. He did two guys on the corner of the box with a lot of composure and then fired a shot wide of the far post. He also turned away from three guys really neatly a little later on. Thirdly, he pulled out a trick to set away a bloke down the Popside touchline (where I stand). That and a couple of other things made him look like his old self, rather than the hurried, stressed, hopeless shadow of the player he should always have been. Of course, he might have been garbage out on the Bench wing, but I'm getting old now, and my eyes aren't what they used to be =D

Just read the Bournemouth Forum ( squad, former players) & the pen picture states that Cooper is 5'10" which I suppose is a little short for a central defender. It also states he can play anywhere in defense or midfield. Reading this would seem to indicate that he would be a very good signing. He was offered another contract at the end of 2011/2012 season but rejected it, I wonder if it was the money, or length of contract that did not suit him.PlainmoorRoar wrote:Cooper grew into the game as it went on, lacks height but makes up for it with control
Rendell didnt look sharp (understandably) dont know if he is the answer really
Last season it looks like he played for Crawley & Portsmouth on loan.
Chris Hargreaves is now assisting in first team coaching at Bournemouth, as well as looking after the kids.

Rendell was and always will be crap. Far too lazy and not in Howes class. He would be our first bad signing. As he didnt want to stay here last time why should we bail him out as his career goes down the toilet. There must be better options out there.

Don't underestimate the importance that the Jesus Hargreaves link will have for us this season...

Thanks Matt - helpful overview of the game for those of us who couldn't get there tonight. How did Dale Tonge do, and where did AK play Tom Cruise?
I predicted you'd be saying this!Mattpuma wrote:Rendell was and always will be crap. Far too lazy and not in Howes class. He would be our first bad signing. As he didnt want to stay here last time why should we bail him out as his career goes down the toilet. There must be better options out there.

Rene got 16 goals in 45 games last year, including 4 penalties and 15 yellow cards. Scott Rendell got 12 goals in 42 games with no pens and 3 yellow cards. Career to date, Rene has 62 goals in 194 games, Rendell has 87 goals in 194 games.Mattpuma wrote:Rendell was and always will be crap. Far too lazy and not in Howes class. Surprised to see the negative comments about Rendell. He's never going to be Howe, he's easier to brush off the ball and keep quiet, but we knew that already. He and Benyon link up well, and I'm sure as a partnership they'd score more goals than Rene mustered on his own. Tonight's showing did little to change my opinion on that, and we'd do well to attract better.
Benyon himself set the tone from the front, chasing everything down and looking like the slighter, tireless player of his first spell at the club. There were a fair few impressive performances, particularly from Tonge (one of the best full backs we've had in years), Shaun Cooper (composed, mops up loose balls and can pick a pass), and last season's flops Bodin (full of effort, invention and skill) and Lathrope.
Unlike Benyon, the impressive contingent of younger players from the bench were rewarded for their efforts. The bulkier MacKenzie looked a genuine option as third choice CB, Craig was stronger in CM, Thompson sprinted back and forth with end product, Sullivan charged around the pitch and kept his composure to score, and Chapell likewise finished well after the defender's farcical fall. They all look like worthy members of the squad, rather than players handed a contract to make us feel better about our youth department.
Onto the weakness. For me, it's glaringly the left side of the defence. I love Downes, he seems like a top bloke, and those heroic headers and challenges in the box are brilliant to watch. He is a bit of a liability, though. His distribution is awful, and he gets pulled out of position. At left back, it's asking a lot for Nicholson to regain the form of old, and Cruise still looks flimsy and easily beaten.
All in all, an entertaining friendly against a side destined to face a long season in the Championship. Our squad is shaping up nicely.

Tomo, I like Tonge already, although he did make a couple of silly mistakes (he got right underneath a header and missed it completely, despite the night being totally calm). Aside from that, he's a solid defender and will, in all likelihood, be number one RB next year. Cruise was untroubled at left back, all the while he concentrated on defending. A couple of times, he tried to get forward and was caught out somewhat by Yeovil's penchant for getting the ball forward quickly, but he was ably deputised by Downes, who had his usual brilliant game. Both Cruise and Tonge will be very useful additions to the first team this year (nothing against Nico, I just think that Cruise, with some games under his belt, will be superior in almost every department, and where he isn't, we have other dead ball specialists, among them the mercurial Nathan Craig).
Matt.
Sorry Jerry, not Tubbs (good shout though, I'd forgotten about him)
