Deadline Day Dealings

Post by Plymouth Gull »

Are we to expect anything today then? After the January deadline day saw several comings and goings, can we expect any further additions today?

I still feel we're short at CB, Saah hasn't come up to scratch yet, in my mind. Of course, a forward wouldn't go amiss if Howe is injured.

I dont expect nothing today, but i see there will be a lot going on around the country and quite a bit in league 2.
Inless anyone is offered to us today and its of intrest of ling, but i dont see nothing donw plainmoor today sadly.

Just to say to Nickgull, Ling highly rates Saah and has put a lot of trust into him, so i cant see him dropping him form a starting 11 let alone by a replacment.

I only just noticed a couple of days ago Adam Le Fondre has gone to Reading for £350000....always scores lots of goals...even at Rochdale before....do we now have a weakened Rotheram side ?

No, they have still got a very decent side without ALF. They also plan to sign someone today which i was told there after Harrad from Northampton who scored loads of goals for Burton and a few for Northampton.

Last seaon they struggled without him but there to strong this season.

A bit like I was talking about on the "Devon clubs" thread, Argyle have reinforced their child-like defence with a months loan for Gillingham defender Simon King.

Good player, but has had injury troubles recently and not a lot of game time.

"1148: THE INSIDER

BBC Radio Devon report that Torquay United boss Martin Ling says he has no plans to sign anybody and is hoping no-one comes in with a "phenomenal" offer for one of his squad."

Hmmm... Is Martin hoping for a "phenomenal" offer???

Brett; I know Saah is friends with Ling, but I'm hoping that doesn't stop him being dropped should he not be playing up to scratch. Obviously at the moment it's still early days and he may be getting used to League football again, but it isn't that much of a step up from the BSP in reality, so he shouldn't need much more time.

Jeff - I saw that earlier. A good signing, if he doesn't spend the month out injured.

Phil - I'm guessing the 'one of our squad' is Eunan, and ML isn't alone in hoping a phenomenal bid doesn't come in!

Is this figure confirmed, or rumour?

Seems an awful lot. Doubtless, he's good, but is he better than Ryan Lowe who went for less? No, he certainly is not.

Is Manset better than ALF though? Reading signed him for half a million in January.

Macclesfield lose Emile Sinclair to Peterborough. Good timing!

Thats nothing. If you wait a while I bet you will see that Plymouth have lost their league standing to Peter Risdale and bad book keeping

Was just coming on here to post that. Could not be better timing for us - providing they aren't able to reinvest that money by the end of the day.

Reading got an unbelievable deal on ALF, absolutely worth a punt. Manset still raw for that league but i think we all saw his potential at Edgar Street last season, work in progress.

As for us, I was thinking of doing a 'Where we are' thread but to be honest it does link to the transfer dealings so I'll do it here.

Question marks asked of certain players at the start of the season, some new faces in and I have to say so far it's gone pretty much as well as could be realistically hoped.

Last night was a good exercise for the 'fringe' players to play in a competitive game and again I think we saw varied levels of success there. Rice, LRT, Macklin, Bodin did themselves no harm whatsoever.

Just on a few inidividuals, I think now I understand why Bucks didn't play Oastler at right back, OK he looked half decent there in meaningless games but of the matches I've seen this season, he's played right back in all of them and he just looks lost there. No positional sense, always ends up in the middle and he dives into tackles so much, leaving us exposed. Countless times at Aldershot and last night the first goal came from their left winger having all the time of day to whip a low cross in. I really want Leadbitter to get himself fit because I'm hoping he's going to be our right back long term. Oastler is a good player but I think he's a central midfielder.

Saah not convinced. Stands off instead of pushing forwards out of the way to head it. Allows them too much time to control it, head it, flick it, bring it down whatever they want to do. I was hoping for him to be the BRanston replacement in terms of defneding first and organising. I don't see that in him at all. With 2 other cb's (Robbo and Ellis) that don't talk much and occasionally need a rocket to get them concentrating, it's not ideal at the minute having Saah not doing those things. With the ball at his feet he's fine but that needs to be a bonus, needs to defend first. Head it, kick it, get in the way of things.

McPhee, I'm going to stick up for McPhee because i've heard criticisms levelled at him in games, ones i understand but the reason I'm defending him is being this sort of 'jack of all trades' he's not being played in the position where he's had recent success. Last night I thought we'd see him central midfield or even up front or just off the striker. He's one footed and was asked to play on the elft side of midfield. Thankless task. Jury's out to an extent but he needs some more time.

Macklin, good last night, offers more than the other two on the evidence of this season. He's a work in progress but we need to give him 10 games. He has to start the next few matches because he gives us so much more of a threat consistently than the others. I rate Macklin, he'll be a good player for us he just needds the opportunity.

At the minute our weakness is certainly in defense. I'm not sure Ling is convined on who should be the wide right player, i'm hoping Macklin has persuaded him a bit more after yesterday. Bodin adds to the attack big time and I like what i saw, more of an athlete and a better footballer than Kee. Defensively we need to sort the right back position and if he's going to carry on with Saah then he really needs to up his game. I imagine we'll probably put Robbo at right back for the current time being but I think and hope it's short term. On what I've seen Robertson is our best centre half, I would be tempted if Leadbitter is away for a while yet to dip into the loan market for a right back or another centre half.

Yes glad he has moved on but then again Macc will look at our front line attack and see Kee has left, Howe probably out injured and Bodin is off with the the Welsh U/21's. Dont think they will be getting to worried about facing Atieno/Mcphee with Spear on the bench :-/
