I cdnuolt blveiee that I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd what I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in what oredr the ltteers in a word are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is that the first and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can still raed it wouthit a porbelm. This is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the word as a wlohe. Amzanig huh? The brain is very good at computing words and you get a signal telling you what a word is before you actually take in the spelling so it isn't hard to read a piece of text like that, however I do think spelling is important and always have done.

Indeed, I think spelling is important, too. I also read all of that easily.

Spelling is incredibly important in all sectors of life. The reason that paragraph works is because the first and last letters are always correct and the middle letters are also correct, but in the wrong order. I remember seeing the same paragraph on a forum where someone had changed one letter in each word. It became pretty much unreadable.

I, too, think spelling is important. Two of my four kids have major problems with dyslexia and have had to work extra hard in their studies.
One is at university hoping for a career in advertising/marketing, the other is looking towards the sciences, physics in particular. They both understand that, whether they're writing copy for an article or a report, they'll be partly judged on their correct use of language in the written form.
Nowt wrang with dialect or colloquialisms eethor, hinny, but divvn't expect to be hord ootside the northeast is their watchword!
Cheers
Bruce

Spelling and grammar are really important - keeps me in a job!! I wouldn't correct spelling for someone though as I know how it can be a mental block for many and I wouldn't want f'ever to think I'm a nerd (although really Dave, it should have been their o:) )
It seems to be a focus again at school in the moment; when the boys were attending primary, they never had lessons or homework regarding spelling rules, but now I take 2 groups a week just to concentrate on the basic spelling rules. Private tuition available on request... :~D

In the study of Law which I'm currently undertaking spelling and grammar are crucial for high grades. I think the importance of spelling really depends on the importance of the writing.
