Torquay Fans Player of the Season - The Latest Standings

Post by Gulliball »

If anyone was wondering why I create man of the match threads after every game, it's to record the performance of the squad over the season. The idea is that at the end of the season it's hopefully a useful tool to look back on and judge the season by - each of the 46 games are worth exactly the same, unlike the traditional vote for player of the season, which tends to heavily favour the players who have played well in the last few months of the season. We normally get a pretty clean consensus for each game, so I like to think it is pretty accurate.

For any people new to the site, the 2010/11 results can be found here: http://torquayfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1784" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Guy Branston won what became a 2 horse race narrowly ahead of Chris Zebroski.

It was also pretty interesting to use to judge players who were here for different lengths of time. It was a simple concept, total points divided by number of appearances, but reavealed some fairly interesting results. For 2010/11 Craig Stanley beat Guy Branston and Chris Zebroski into 2nd and 3rd to win after his hugely impressive three month loan spell (2010/11 thread - http://torquayfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1788" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;-).

For each game the man of the match scores 7 points, with 2nd place scoring 5 points, 3rd 4 points, 4th 3 points, 5th 2 points and everybody else nominated at least once scores a point.

The current standings for the 2011/12 season, after the Crawley game (33 of 46 played) are as follows:

Image

1. Lee Mansell (110)
2. Bobby Olejnik (94)
3. Mark Ellis (79)
4. Eunan O'Kane (73)
5. Joe Oastler (59)
6. Rene Howe (55)
7. Chris Robertson (53)
8. Danny Stevens (51)
9. Damon Lathrope (50)
10. Kevin Nicholson (48)
11. Brian Saah (40)
12. Billy Bodin (29)
13. Taiwo Atieno (28)
14. Ian Morris (20)
15. Chris McPhee (12)
16. Angus MacDonald (7)
=17. Billy Kee (2)
=17. Lloyd Macklin (2)
=19. Martin Rice (0)
=19. Lathanial Rowe-Turner (0)
=19. Daniel Leadbitter (0)
=19. Ed Palmer (0)
=19. Saul Halpin (0)
=19. Ashley Yeoman (0)
=19. Ray Spear (0)
=19. Tom Aldred (0)
=19. Ryan Jarvis (0)
=19. Nathan Craig (0)

Lee Mansell started the season on fire, and the lead he built up then has been maintained by a string of consistent performances ever since. However, Bobby has managed to stay within touching distance - quite a phenomenal feat for a goalkeeper given the scoring system. Eunan O'Kane has fallen away a bit since Christmas, but he and Mark Ellis are still in with a chance of winning.

The other hugely noticeable thing is how few players have scored points in comparison with last year. There's only 28 players involved with the squad, ten of which haven't scored a single point and a further two who have only scored a couple. Angus MacDonald, with only 90 minutes as a Gull has jumped into 16th place with just one performance. The first 11, with only very few few squad players are holding a monopoly on point scoring.

At this stage of the season last year we had had 30 different point scorers, and the breakdown was completely different - in particular there was a breakway group at the top and then large gaps. Whereas this year Brian Saah is currenly 11th with 40 points, in 2010/11 this was approximately the number of the number on which 11th place finished the season with, after another 13 games. I will do a fuller comparision after the season has finished, but the stats certainly back up the huge differences that are so easily apparent between last season and this.

To date, the team of the season so far is as such:

9 of spots look pretty secure, as you would expect, however Brian Saah will challenge Chris Robertson and Billy Bodin's spot could be taken by anyone with a good run of form.

Lee Mansell is still currently leading, although his lead has been cut.

You'll have to wait until the end of the season to see who wins, if your fingernails can take it.
